Early in the morning, risin' to the street
Light me up that cigarette, and I strap shoes on my feet
Got to find a reason, a reason things went wrong
Got to find a reason why my money's all gone
I got a dalmation, and I can still get high
And I can play the guitar like a mother f****** riot
Well, life is (too short), so love the one you got
Cause you might get run over, or you might get shot
Never start no static, I just get it off my chest
Never had to battle with my bullet proof vest
Take a small example, take a ti-ti-tip from me
Take all your money, give it up to charity
Lovin's what I got, it's within my reach
And the Sublime style still straight from Long Beach
It all comes back to you, you're going to get what you deserve
Try and test that, you're bound to get served
Love's what I got, don't start a riot
You feel it when the dance gets hot
Lovin' is what I got - I said, remember that
Lovin' is what I got - now remember that
Lovin' is what I got - I said, remember that
Lovin' is what I got...
I don't cry when my dog runs away
I don't get angry at the bills I have to pay
I don't get angry when my mom smokes pot
Hits the bottle and goes back to the rock
f*****' and fightin', it's all the same
Livin' with Louie's dog's the only way to stay sane
Let the lovin', let the lovin' come back to me

Lovin' is what I got - I said, remember that
Lovin' is what I got - now remember that
Lovin' is what I got - I said, remember that
Lovin' is what I got, I got, I got...

Sublime is amazing!
Some Lady Madonna in this song
Omygod, I never wanted something so badly
to learn to play the guitar and sing just like Bradley,
and the B-lines that Eric dropped reminded me of hip-hop
and I'm singin Lovin' is what I got I got...
Could follow this with The Dirty Heads "Believe"
Some Lady Madonna in the beginning
Great jam.  Also nice to hear it without the unnecessary censoring (one of several reasons I am done with commercial radio).

Mmm, not quite. Lady Madonna does yank the beat and the piano line straight out of the first bars of "Bad Penny Blues". But this song really pulls the entire vocal melody from "Lady Madonna" as well.

Yes, the similarity to the melody line was deliberately clear - they weren't trying to deceive anyone.

Well, you must be impressed with yourself. When's your album coming out? And what do you mean by "bouncing out of a blootoof speaker covered in the distortion of a San Diegan beach bum called Josh", dare I ask?

Sounds like maybe you should be getting back to your work, laddie, making fantastic album rock for all of us to enjoy.

Interesting comment, given your constant slagging of a particular band.  Does this not also apply to you, then?

Livin with Louie Dog is the only way to stay sane... He used to run around on stage when they were playing.

Absolute rubbish laddie. Get on with your work.

These guys have a few decent songs, but the rest of it (like this) sounds like a they cannot decide on their identity. Sounds like the kinda stuff which would be bouncing out of a blootoof speaker covered in the distortion of a San Diegan beach bum called Josh, wearing a tea cozy on his head while eating a burrito for breakfast.

Sounds like maybe you should be getting back to your work, laddie, making burgers at Josh's Grill on Ocean Beach.

When I was 18, my best friend was killed in an accident. I was the one who went to pick up his Chevy and drive it back to his parents house. I climbed in, turned the ignition and was greeted with this song. There's times in life when things just seem directed straight at you and this was one of those. Having been the last song he ever heard, it carries a bit more weight for me than perhaps it does for most.
Life is too short so love the one you got. Amen.
RIP, JP.
"I can play the guitar like a mother f*****g riot," then he proceeds to play the guitar like a middle school slap fight.
Genius band, but destined for tragedy. Fascinating article about their time at Willie's Pedernales Studio.

just for the line:  "I got a dalmation, and I can still get high

Check out Bad Penny Blues by Humphrey Lyttelton (1956) and tell me that Macca himself wasn't "ripping" something with Lady Madonna.
Can't hear the resemblance? Maybe that's because using the same basic blues progression is not ripping off a song.

Beautiful, painful memories... miss you/then D.
“Radio Edit”. How quaint.
RIP Bradley & Lou Dog

In February 1990, Nowell adopted an abused dalmatian puppy from a shelter and named him "Louie" after his grandfather. Louie Nowell, King Louie, or "Lou Dog" as he was called, became something of a mascot for the band. Lou Dog was often allowed to wander around the stage during the band's concert performances.

Following Nowell's death in 1996, Lou Dog was cared for by Miguel, the band's manager. Lou Dog died from old age on September 17, 2001.
This song helped me through some tough times and it does now. It makes me smile even though I want to forbid myself to. Brings me out of my shell even if just for a second. Smile, folks, you‘re allowed to. And thanks Bill and Rebecca for doing what you do.
Wasn't this on the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 soundtrack?
(Having checked: it was Dave Mirra's Freestyle BMX. A nostalgia blast in any case.)

I might be one of the few people who like this edit better than the original version. It's cleaner (which may be why it's not as highly regarded), and better-produced. It's the "finished" version of the album cut.
Too bad this is the radio edit version. It’s like painting a veil on the Mona Lisa.
Digging this tune!! HELLSYES!!
Going from Ray LaMontagne to Sublime...That is why I have an RP listener/supporter for the last 18 years.  Keep up the great work.  Love u all
Mighty Quinn variation.

Pretty myopic viewpoint you have there.
never read the lyrics before... long beach in the house!
Short of ideas that day.
Tiny lyric correction here: “F**k it, fight it; it’s all the same.” The “or” is implied by the comma.
So sad that heroin took yet another artist too young. Great band, great song.
@BillG....Thank you and hell yes!  I'd go with 10 if this weren't the radio edit version....still....that's what you got and I'll take it....thanks from this Sunny Seattleite enjoying Sublime...and Long Live RP!!
Nice!
wooooo SUBLIME!
hope bradley's still putting out dope shit in the great beyond & i get there to enjoy it somehow
Haven't heard this in years....Thanks Bill!
"Life is too short, so love the one you got." - Bradley Nowell

Yet another talented musician who didn't live to see 30. He didn't even get to enjoy the excesses of fame as this song was not a #1 hit until after he died.
Oh Yeah! Thanks!
Insert "Lady Madonna" lyrics here. Blatant rip. Bad.
Digging this "sublime" tune.
