deeper and deeper until i drown
hard going under without a sound
i try to run but you hold me down
deeper and deeper until i drown

longing is a ghost
when the one you love the most
no longer has you on their mind

deeper and deeper until i drown
hard going under without a sound
i try to run but you hold me down
deeper and deeper until i drown

hell or high water
and hold on tight
and if you're not mine
i'll wait all night

the branches are black
and the tree stands bare
haunted by the bloom
that's no longer there
clinging to the ground
to grow another ring around

deeper and deeper until i drown
so hard going under without a sound
i try to run but you hold me down
you've got me deeper and deeper until i drown

I hear RP channeling Ben Harper after all.
Normally Ben Harper doesn't break through for me, but this song definitely made its way to the pleasure centre.
For the discussion - I definitely hear Gabriel and Ben Harper. Mostly Ben _ only because I have seen him live and know some friends of his.

If I haven't missed any comments, Harper is channeling Pete Townshend, Peter Gabriel, Elliot Smith, Cat Stevens, and himself. He's a one-man polyphonic possession choir! Must get crowded with so much spirit in there.

I hear an English Channel thing happening here...

Pete Townsend doing Peter Gabriel.

Amazing song! And I just love the use of an odd time signature.

I agree it's an amazing song! Disagree about time signature. It's standard 4/4 time signature. The emphasis on the upbeat instead of downbeat gives it the illusion that it's odd meter.

Vocally it sounds similar in different spots to Petty, Townshend, or Gabriel.  The odd rhythm makes it sound quite different though, especially to the first two artists.
Seamless transition from the Shins in this great mix. Very cool Bill!  ...and a deep track from Ben. Just fantastic as always!
Sounds like Ben Harper had his Elliot Smith phase (didn't we all?)
I am kind of hearing Ben Harper channeling Ben Harper...
A truly committed artist with massive integrity!
"Call it what it is " has some beautiful moments !
This is one.

..... And how relevant still, is the title track in these times of another unfortunate and avoidable event between law enforcement and "The people"

Wow. I had to pop in to see who this is... i was definitely getting the Pete Townshend vibe.

Listening to it again, i totally hear Peter Gabriel in the vocals in the bridge.
Really great song
I haven't liked one damn BH song that I've heard... until now. This is great.

Whomever, whatever, he is a very good musician in his own right.

Reminds me of the group Charlie.

Yes! I didn't hear it at first but at about the 3 minute mark his vocals suddenly channel Townshend

Heard PG as well as PT
Not many comments for this one.  Perhaps we should hear it more often - I would vote for that.
Oh! The agony in the break!  It must be amazing/painful/sad/heartbreaking when you capture that in a song.
Wow. I had to pop in to see who this is... i was definitely getting the Pete Townshend vibe.

I actually can hear a bit of both. The Peter Gabriel thing in the late bridge is really prominent. I actually thought it WAS PG! Cool tune.

Amazing song! And I just love the use of an odd time signature.
I was hearing a Cat Stevens thing.

Good tune - I like this more than the other one RP has played from this album - easy "7"

More Ben for 2017.
