There isn't much german music on RP despite a big german audience. But the songs available proves the quality of RP... This song from the former (communist) East Germany is surely one worth playing
Is there any 100 for it?
But this isn't the long record version, is it?
Bumped to 9 after following reading fellow listeners comments about the long version, and giving it a listen. This is a great part of RP.

Almost perfect, only the last line has a curious mistake. It should be: When the rain soddens (lit. "makes wet") I fly through the world.
I have very mixed feelings about this one. I love the song and it brings back many memories from the past, especially the live concerts with City. The song itself is a solid 9, on some days even a 10.

But this remix of the song leaves a bad aftertaste. It just feels a little "off", as if it was only re-recorded for commercial purposes. The whole intro is missing. It is like playing American Woman without the intro. Also, the horns throw me off on this version. In my mind this version only deserves a 6.
This is what DeepL produces as translation:

Once knowing, this remains forever
Is not intoxication that already sues the night
Is not the melting of colours, nor the glimmer of candles
By the grey of the morning long since chased away

Once to grasp, once to feel deep in the blood
This is mine and it is only through you
No more cooling my brow at the window
Where a mist has passed heavy by

To grasp once, to feel deep in your blood
This is mine and it is only through you
A bird cries, watch my plumage
When the rain dries up I fly through the world

Hello Rebecca and Bill. This isn´t the original version. I´ve got the vinyl Maxi of the original recording. It is also from 1978, If you listen to this song on youtube you will hear the difference. The original recording sounds much finer! Greetings from germany!

I am pretty sure they know the differences in the versions and years etc...
It may be that fresh ears would prefer this version over the others, so there is that.

Wow. Never expected to hear this on RP! Ostrock pur! This is why I love this station!

I just finished listening to the 17 minute long version. It is indeed exceptional!
Like drinking a strawberry daiquiri from a cannon, the German language is not meant to be sung like that
I'm tempted to give it a 10 just for its time and place.

I have to agree, even I'm a much later generation and from the East, but it is great to hear it here.
But yea, the more typical and not so remastered version would be even nicer. This here almost sounds like a cover version. A little stiff. Does not have the real rough feeling of the original version.

Maybe RP can find this and play it one day.

Whilst this track was not initially appealing and did not thrill me, what did (and does constantly) thrill me is the fact that this platform continues to offer up all that is worthy and intriguing in the world of music.

That RP exists at all in this modern world is a wonder in itself. Perhaps one day RP will be devoured by one of the world's all-too-powerful algorithmically-driven mega platforms but, for now, Muso's have never had it so good.

My Muso loves RP too
Cool, never thought to hear that song here! But there are better versions, if I'm not wrong...
Wow a first for me
Catapulted back to unforgettable memories and experience.
Great song! I have heard it already in the early 80s in Hannover/West Germany, when Germany was still divided. In the meantime it is "cult music". It's nice that it was (re-)discovered by Bill and Rebecca and has been "honored" again on Radio Paradise, even if the "original version of the first hour" is in my opinion even better. Thanks a lot, I hope you will play it more often!

Indeed, in the original version a great folk-rock highlight, especially the longplay. But this soft-washed version is the worst I have ever heard.
Good stuff, like it. Check the Album, "blauer Planet" from Karat. Same genre, with some outstanding songs. My favorite: "Gefährten des Sturmwinds"
Ha. Had to look who this was. I thought it was Willie Nelson singing!
greetings from the East of Germany.
still listening to this tune over here frequently.
And the Band is still rockin' it!
Know once, this will last forever
Isn't intoxication who has already sued the night
Is not melt of color, nor candlelight
Long chased away by the gray of the morning

Grasp once, feel deep in the blood
This is mine and it's only through you
Don't cool your forehead at the window anymore
A fog passed heavily by it

Grasp once, feel deep in the blood
This is mine and it's only through you
A bird complains, watch out for my plumage
When the rain is wet, I fly through the world

[German poetry be like this]
Ahh, surprised to hear City on RP. Like many listeners said - play the 17 minute version please. An easy 8-9.

Here's the original version. It features a longer introcduction to it's main theme. First listened to it on a Greek island in the late 1970s. Great tune!

Thanks, I was unaware.
When you think you heard a lot of different kinds of music

And tune in to Radio Paradise

You get this

Easy 8 from your boy, spread LOVE
I recall submitting this song 10 years ago ;-) Great to finally hear this piece of history.
Alas, this is not the original... But thank you RP for going out on a limb on this one.

I still remembering seeing City and the amazing Georgi Gokow live in the 80s. They were definitely a force.
Surprising...

Hello Rebecca,

thanks for putting that up on RP. I second that what Lemmes says. As well it
fits to RP playing something other stations don't. So why not go for the complete
long and old version?

Keep on your good job
Jens

I love the 17 minute version of this song which would get at least an eight from me - it has so many more emotions in it. Got to know it in the 80s in West Germany.

Like most things by former German Democratic Republic, East German music from behind the iron curtain has been forgotten or lost due to "progress". Thanks for digging it up!

Listeners should be aware that even vaguely deviant lyrics had to be hidden under many layers of obscurity to pass censorship (if at all).

Oh yes - the 17 min version would be a treat!

Only on RP would I find a piece like this.  Looks to be a recent addition with 31 ratings all over the spectrum at time of this post.  Giving it a 5 on first listen

@BillG: would love to submit the long version as flac, if you're interested...
danke.

Greetings from Bavaria to all the listeners outside. Stay safe
a East German title of the 70s
Definitely not the best version. Too clean, too many violins. Still, nice to have it here. Great song.
He is channeling his inner Willie Nelson. {#Wink}
a classic gem of eastern germany

Great song out of the former east side of Germany
It may overstay its welcome a tad.
