Turn turn away
From the sound of your own voice
Calling no one, just a silence
Run to see you at the edge
Fall off the avalanche
Turn away

Hold hold the light
That fixes you in time
Keeps you under
Takes you over the wall
That love divides between waking and slumber
Turn away

Turn turn away
From the weight of your own past
It's magic for the devil
And betray the lack of change
Once you have spoken
Turn away

This guy is so versatile.
His Simon and Garfunkle phase?
Great song. I like Beck. You never know what you're going to get album to album. THAT's how to do  it.

Actually , the  song following this one today is from Paul Simon.

Vocals are very much like Gilmour, and the melody reminds me of Roger Waters circa 1970.

I have never heard of this Islander. So for me Back is OK.
To use another commenter's phrase, to all of you warblers carrying on about plagiarism, autotune, etc., take Beck's advice: Turn, turn away...

That's because it sounds exactly like them.  Almost plagiarism in my book, in spirit if not actual, leagal, plagarism.

"Exactly"?  Which song exactly?  The vocals sound nothing like S&G.  While it's very likely he was influenced by them (as were hundreds of recording artists), I suspect the definition of "plagiarism" in your book is pretty far-reaching.

Okay, to even begin to understand this song:

Turn off your iPad.

Take several deep breaths.
Put your earbuds in or your headphones on.
Listen-to the whole song (it's very hard, but try).
I'm sorry he made it so hard.

Very great suggestion, meatmike!  I find I do this almost spontaneously each time it plays.  Sorry work...ain't getting any done for the 3 minutes of this gem of a track.  Long Live RP!!

What is that, fifth song in a row that I rated 7 and more? I didn't PSD or anything, so that's nice :-)
Great set!!!

Of all the artist featured on RP, I think Beck is the most "Baskin & Robbins" like, as he seems to feature a new "flavor" of music with each album, and even within an album.  His Wiki page says his music "encompasses folk, funk, soul, hip-hop, alternative rock, country and psychedelia” and I’m not complaining…I love the vast variety, although often I’m left with a “what’s this?” feeling after hearing something of his.

This track though….I’m bumping it to a 9 today.  Not sure if I can name many of his tunes (don’t get me started on ‘Loser’ though) although I usually find myself either skipping in disgust or thinking “wow Beck’s pretty good.”

As for the scientology issue….I don’t really give a damn….he can believe in Aliens having seeded the earth and yadayadayada….I’ll just enjoy his music.  Long Live RP!!

What the heck are you warbling on about? There's no auto tune here. Probably plenty of takes to get it right, is all. It's a beautiful song, just sit back and enjoy.
From,  mm. the sound of your own voice

I'd rather be a sparrow than a snail. Which wasn't original to S&G either.
Very Floydish.

very much reminds me of brian Wilson ! great song
Beck is an incredibly versatile artist.  Think of the arc of his music from Mellow Gold to the present.  The first few notes of this song I thought it was CSN, and yes, it is resonant of Simon & Garfunkle, and Elliot Smith too.  He's retro, yet always out front, always changing it up (think Mutations followed by Midnite Vultures and then by Sea Change).  Haven't head this song before or anything from his latest album.  Makes me want to check it out.
Cover photo shows a bit of age in his face- is it possible for this perpetually punky hipster to get old?

Indeed... it's really more like a suite that requires listening all of the way through. This is what I often do while preparing a weekend breakfast, as it really lends itself to early morning listening.

I bought the hi-res FLAC version from HD Tracks. I haven't yet listened to it on my high-end DAP (assuredly not a Pono—sorry, Neil), but look forward to doing so.
My favourite album from 2014, but really all of the songs are good on this album, so I don't know why it seems that this is the only track played from it. It's probably me just tuning in at the "wrong" time.
An incredible album.

Beck does it again. This is a terrific album.
But wait, there's more…Bill just pampered our ears with a beautiful transition from A FilettaLike a Breath of Air to this. Is there no escaping the wonder? Hope not!
RP is this a secret mission?! Slaying me with Patty Griffin's "Let Him Fly", then this Beck song which never fails to move even jaded me?!
The modalities reminiscent of all the best of the complex hidden in simplicities. Perfection of hundreds of years of Common Practise yet here barely perceived.
TdP...
The vocals indeed sound like David Gilmour. I am very surprised by how good and quiet the song is.
A "quiet" album but definitely one to sit down, turn up loud, and get involved in!  It does not disappoint. {#Music}
                 I love Beck's new album..."Turn Away" is very Moody Blues...great sounds{#Daisy}

Now see other listeners can hear early Simon & Garfunkel and David Gilmour...yes...

Well, there are only 12 unique notes, but there is a similar feeling in part of the vocal melody, plus that minor-key thing.
This whole album is mighty fine -- Floydian in some ways, which is a good thing.

The Sound of Silence - Similar descending melody line there.

Picked up this Beck CD - really enjoying it, wonderful CD. Very, very mellow.

Yup, came here to post this same observation. This track could be quietly slipped onto "Division Bell" or something.

I find it to be very much like Gilmour and was rather surprised to see this is Beck. I wonder if his skin turns color to match his surroundings. Has anyone observed this? Maybe a careful examination of photos is in order.

Finally I see the point of Beck. Quite exquisite and beautifully constructed.
I'm not sure about its staying power but I've yet to hear a tune from this effort that I don't like.

definitely purchasing.
I may have to buy this album
This album is really growing on me - the more I listen the more it offers. It may well be one of his very best works, IMHO.

Based on everything I've read and heard about the record so far, this is probably one of my most anticipated CD's this year.
