L A proved too much for the man
[He couldn't make it]
So he's leavin' the life he's come to know
[He said he's goin']
He said he's goin' back to find
Ooh, what's left of his world
The world he left behind
Not so long ago
He's leavin'
On that midnight train to Georgia
Said he's goin' back
To a simpler place in time
And I'll be with him
On that midnight train to Georgia
I'd rather live in his world
Than live without him in mine
He kept dreamin'
That someday he'd be a star
But he sure found out the hard way
That dreams don't always come true
So he pawned all his hopes
And he even sold his old car
Bought a one way ticket back
To the life he once knew
Oh yes he did
He said he would
He's leavin'
On that midnight train to Georgia
Said he's goin' back to find
A simpler place in time
And I'm gonna be with him
On that midnight train to Georgia
I'd rather live in his world
Than be without him in mine
He's leavin'
On that midnight train to Georgia
Said he's goin' back to find
A simpler place in time
And I've gotta be with him
On that midnight train to Georgia
I'd rather live in his world
Than be without him in mine
Go, gonna board, gonna board
The midnight train to Georgia
Gonna board the midnight train
Gotta go, gonna board
Gonna board
Gonna board the midnight train

just heavenly
I just listened  to  Gladys singing and the Pips backing her in this song. It made me twice as happy as it used to!!!
It's pipperific!
Time to groove on my office ball chair...
I never noticed this before, but the Pips were really right out front with Gladys (vocally) on this one, as opposed to being in the background.
For the life of me, how is this song coming in at an average rating of 8! It should be an unequivocal 10. Those who rate it below that don't know music.

Omg how much do I love this song.  Way to go Bill & Rebekah.  A true classic!  Love them Pips!  :-)

{#Yes}
This is one of those great songs that should have also been played on AOR stations in the 70's but because of stations policies "too Top 40 for our station" was not played.
Must have been the LA traffic that really did the guy in.

My God!  In my fascination for manic guitar masters in the 1960s I simply could not see the towering talent of Empress Gladys.  To atone, I just spent all morning rooting out You Tube videos of her.

All aboard!  Still very sweet!

A real "classic"
Gladys, girl, I love you but oh, get a life!

Sorry, this just does not do it for me. Love soul, but her voice makes me want to puke. And I find the backing singers' arrangement cheesy, too.
Just not my favourite of the genre, at all.

Thanks for the counterpoint, but if you're going to bad mouth one of the greatest soul songs of all time at least give examples of who did it better (and maybe why). Otherwise, who's going to take your opinion seriously?
Just great! They were so good and timeless, it would seem. I heard the Pips by themselves in concert and they are terrific! Gladys is goddess-like.
All aboard, all aboard,  Woo-hoo!   (still so sweet)

Factually you are accurate too

I saw Gladys Knight & the Pips do this song on the Ed Sullivan Show around 1971.  Great performance.  I was only about 8 or 9 years old, but I remember the show and they were great.  Iconic song to say the least.

I'd rather had lived in GK & the Pip's world than mine.

It hardly ever gets any better than this...

Glad so many people like this, since I uploaded it! Also glad that I no longer have to check all the time when this will be played the first time, which I did too often since I saw that it was actually added to the library.
Had to check and make sure i was really on RP.... nice add, just not too often please.  This was played so often back in the day here in Georgia, that I am still tired of it.
How did this not make RP until now?
Gladys does a really nice rendition of "Since I Fell For You".

Check it out sometime.
