I can think of many reasons to like a cover. One of my faves is Superman by REM, and I STILL have never heard the original. The difference is Buddy Holly's songs were MAJOR hits. And these sound zactly the same!! (context: today this comes right after a Los Lobos cover of Buddy Holly and I am of course referring to their cover of this tune)

hendrix - all along the watchtower
marvin - grapevine
beatles - twist and shout
jeff buckley - hallelujah
aretha - respect
I can think of many reasons to like a cover. One of my faves is Superman by REM, and I STILL have never heard the original. The difference is Buddy Holly's songs were MAJOR hits. And these sound zactly the same!! (context: today this comes right after a Los Lobos cover of Buddy Holly and I am of course referring to their cover of this tune)

This is the first I have heard it here. I have heard the Los Lobos version many times here. I suppose if you compared the two versions, one could prefer one to the other (I cannot tell the difference, except subtle). In my opinion, in a case like this, the Los Lobos version would never get played. I firmly believe the original should always be preferred to covers unless there is some really good reason.
