Crash on the levee, mama,
Water's gonna overflow,
Swamp's gonna rise,
No boat's gonna row.
Now, you can train on down
To Williams Point,
You can bust your feet,
You can rock this joint.
But oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now?
You're gonna have to find yourself
Another best friend, somehow.

Now, don't you try an' move me,
You're just gonna lose.
There's a crash on the levee
And, mama, you've been refused.
Well, it's sugar for sugar
And salt for salt,
If you go down in the flood,
It's gonna be your own fault.
Oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now?
You're gonna have to find yourself
Another best friend, somehow.

Well, that high tide's risin',
Mama, don't you let me down.
Pack up your suitcase,
Mama, don't you make a sound.
Now, it's king for king,
Queen for queen,
It's gonna be the meanest flood
That anybody's seen.
Oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now?
Yes, you're gonna have to find yourself
Another best friend, somehow.

So strange- I'm not a huge fan of Southern Rock (I despise Lynyrd Skynyrd in all shapes and forms), but I always adored The Allman Brothers. The Allman Brothers' music always had a very heart rending, tortured, sad, rebellious, proud, stark, REAL feel to me.
Lynyrd Skynyrd were like the loud mouthed, mean spirited, gleefully ignorant, toothless rednecks that sat at the back of the bus and hassled everyone.
I'm probably spelling Lynyrd Skynyrd wrong- but they're not worth the 2 seconds it would take to Google them to check.

Yeah, LS seemed seriously redneck and without a lot of love or joy. You don't hear much of the band on various stations anymore, although they were huge before that plane crash.

LizK, I agree: Clapton/Southern Rock?!?! Nnnnooo...
I see I started a debate on Clapton's virtues or lack of them with the slide, and also on the knowledge (or lack of it) of RP fans on this topic. But about the last comment, maybe good to low down the tone and not underestimate the comments of people here: RP has an amazing audience and I learn A LOT hearing it and checking the comments from time to time.

You might like Clapton more or less, his first or last of middle albums: that is a matter of taste. He is not a slide-man, agreed, but it is a fact that he knows how to handle the slide, Motherless children is the typical example but several live performances (including the last 2005 Cream re-joining concert) demonstrate it.

Going back to the origin, the Derek Trucks Band sounds great, it has been a discover to me, thanks RP!
