Be on the lookout for new Cyndi Lauper release, "Memphis Blues".  Raw & gritty, I am told. REAL.  Many nice guests, Musselwhite, BB King, etc.  Supposed to come out this month, I believe.

I have heard her really sing without the little girl schtick and I am here to tell you, she really does have some strong pipes. I was very pleasantly surprised. Looking forward to hearing what she puts out.
Love the grit.

I met Janis Joplin. Never noticed anything peculiar about her odor. Drank a lot. Otherwise nice. Either you met a different Janis, or you're just being nasty. My money's on the latter.

Well said Lizard!

okay, we're going in a different direction now—-segueing from the blues maybe?

Is still blues, don't care who's singing it.

I mute it too. Seems like this one, Message of Love, and Middle of the Road are played A LOT on RP. How about Mystery Achievement or Back on the Chain Gang?

And how about Birds of Paradise or Lovers of Today? Too slow? Then what the hell, let's hear Clothes.

Hahaha...jerk.

sounds too unfinished

Wasn't that the charm of the blues?

sounds too unfinished

I kinda like this song.
No, not "again".

I bought the album on the strength of this song. I didn't care much for the rest of it. At any rate this song is in a different style than the rest.

concrete proof that even elite musical outlets such as RP can overplay a song..

regardless, the song itself sounds like like typical corporate-engineered rock.

what's really sad is that the song sounds like the pretenders trying to imitate the white stripes' coarse style by artificially "roughing up" the song.. the result seems contrived at best, particularly with the overdubbed-in "stop" and "again" which just sounds DUMB DUMB DUMB..

"again" i say DUMB DUMB DUMB...

a solid "5"

Yes you are.

chrissy was cool when women werent hangin as cool as she is. this woman will never lose it.

I keep hearing Sonny Landreth on slide

Wo! When Chrissie commands "AGAIN!" I sit up and take notice.

Is the only cut on the album?  Its not bad, but surely there's more.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!  The Pretenders, and this song in particular, are why we need something lower than a 1 - Sucko-Barfo rating!!!

Whoo hoo! For once someone agrees with me. :-) Usually I just get slammed for having an opinion.

And yes, I have heard their albums, not just the radio hits. My ex loved the Pretenders and would play them quite often. I never cared for any of it, and the few songs that got overplayed on the radio didn't help. Sorry anyone who's a fan...just my two cents.

Sounds like... Lucinda Williams.  Not bad... This is the best pretenders I have heard.
ENOUGH, ENOUGH, ENOUGH ALREADY!!!
Good effort, so-so production. 7
Chrissie, chicky baby, where's that swagger, where's your cruel vocal edge? This feels more like a sound check than anything else. Way weak effort from Ms. Hynde. Stumbles and never gets up.
I can't remember the last time I cringed listening to RP.

But this is just horrible. 2/10.
Jeepers! I thought this was purty good..
guess I was wrong, according to my RP collegues

Tired, battered-down intoxicated Lucinda Williamslike vocals, tattered slide guitar...still think it was purty good

I hate being wrong
There are some really good songs on this new Pretenders album. This is NOT one of them. This one is just... wrong. And overplayed already.

I don't know, but there's something a little false about sounding like good-ol' farting-amps rock'n'roll when you're at Chrissie Hynde's stage of her career.

Feh! You're never too old to rock'n'roll!  Chrissie will give up her amps right after Neil Young does, which is to say, never.

I hate the Pretenders too.Never liked 'em. Always thought their crappy songs got too much radio airplay, especially Middle of the Road, Back on the Chain Gange and Brass in Pocket. Another band that I just don't see the appeal in and another reason to go running for mute button.

Ok, officially sick of this song now.
Not bad, almost back to their old form.

Man, this sounded great on my headphones.
much respect for chrissie.
on first hearing...a little boring.
still it may grow... will wait to rate.

Ever heard any of their non-radio stuff, perchance? It's awesome, which is why they have so many thousands of fans worldwide. And even Chrissie hates "Brass in Pocket," her record label made her put that out as their "single."{#Eh}{#Ask}{#Surprised}{#Foot-in-mouth}

Agreed.  The best songs on the Pretenders albums (and most other artists, I believe) were the songs they did NOT play on the radio.  In the days of itunes, however, people just buy songs, not albums.
Sad.

Thought it was Lucinda Williams first time I heard it.
I don't like the Pretenders
But this.....I like!
not sure why this song gets such a low rating would love to see it done live, that ia a nasty guitar lol

Can someone please help me understand why I hate the Pretenders?  I sincerely do, but can't put my finger on why.  Sorry Ms. Hynde - nothing personal.  Although that "Middle of the Road" tune is pretty cool.  It was one of the few songs I actually liked playing w/my old band...

Anyway (and seriously), any help would be appreciated.  If it helps, I hate Stevie Nicks too (because she sounds like 2 cats being stapled together).

No takers, eh?! Guess you're on your own!

She made many a star; if it didn't make CKLW, it just didn't make it. Period.

Interesting hearing her play off Jim Keltner instead of Martin Chambers.

I'll second that...Any record with Jim Keltner on it is OK by me. Ms. Hynde works it really well. Very cool. Somebody will have to put this under the tree for me.

Great album cover!
Interesting hearing her play off Jim Keltner instead of Martin Chambers.
Dear Ashlee Simpson - please listen to Chrissie Hynde and learn what a real woman who plays real rock 'n' roll sounds like.
I like it mucho.
It would be cool to follow this one with Bowie's Rosalynn..........hey Rosalynn your the girl for me...ya thats the one !

Loving the thick rhythm guitar.  I saw Chrissie in her first concert back after the loss of James Honeyman-Scott and Pete Farndon, with new band featuring Robbie Macintosh, at the Bronco Bowl in Dallas in 1984.  She knew that Dallas would be good to her in her return to the stage, and it was.  Chrissie put on one hell of a show.  She is a real trooper.  I've had a love affair going with her for many, many years now.

YEAH! Makes me think she and Lucinda have been channelling one another.
Chrissy's still got it!

been hearing this on NPR for weeks and each time i just dance (in my car, it's easier than it sounds) and sing along. LOVE this. happy it's on RP.
Very cool. What a groove.

Thanks Chrissy.

I heard this yesterday — sounded pretty good. Basic, but well-done.
