Dialing in a forgotten voice
Coming in like waves rolling off the coast
Sweeping through illegal ports
Rising from the depths falling off the tongue
Ships drifting out of tune
Coming in like waves rolling off the coast

Many, many more, sculpting the shoreline
Etching the harbor and the people
Who've stayed afloat

Coming in like waves rolling off the coast
Dialing in a forgotten voice
Rising from the depths falling off the tongue
Sweeping through illegal ports
Coming in like waves rolling off the coast
Ships drifting out of tune
Can't stop the waves coming like a ghost

Is that your shape
In the foam of the sea
After all these years
Coming home to me

La Chascona
Hearts to ocean
Vows unbroken
Lying in the bath fully clothed
Ready for the ocean's wake
The tears won't wash away
What her eyes can't erase

Not safe to say in her native tongue
A radio voice drowning out
The general's song lingering on
A raft made of books from a driftwood house
Returns to the waves

He meant the song.  Valparaiso is in Chile.
Another great group I was introduced to by RP.  Now I have about 50 of their songs on my iPad!  Thanks, RP!!

Love this one.  Love Calexico.  Love RP for introducing me to this exceptional band.  Love you guys

Jacob Valenzuela is indeed "the Miles Davis of mariachi."
One of the many bands who, without RP, I fear I may never have heard. I owe RP (Bill and Rebecca) so much for enriching my life. Thank you {#Music}

You'd have to use special characters to write out fractions.  I guess I gave this a 6¾.

I'm going to have to go with Feast of Wire for best album. I can't get enough of Quattro (World drifts in). One of my favorite songs of all time.

3 days to go before Edge of the Sun drops!!

Why stop at 10ths? I would like to give this a 8.92 since I think 8.93 is a little on the high side...

I always round up. For me at least, I figure that I can't even play an instrument so who am I to split hairs!

I thought I heard Sam Beam singing backing vocals on this. AMG confirms it! Nice pairing.
This one brought me to tears when I heard them play it live at a very small club in downtown Sacramento. (Trumpter) Jacob Valenzuela knocked me out!

(And I'm sure the ladies find him to be a real heartthrob.)
love love love Calexico.  Saw them in Toronto and they were awesome.

So funny that all you Hoosiers think this song is about Valpo, Indiana! Since when have you had an ocean — and ships? {#Hand} La Chascona, which the song references, was Pablo Neruda's house in Santiago, Chile. He had another house in Valparaiso, Chile and it was called something else... I do wonder though if Calexico got the names houses mixed up when writing this song.

Valparaiso=vale of paradise.

Let's see, Valparaiso Indiana, home of a 3 day Popcorn festival and Valparaiso University or Valparaíso Chile, a very groovy city and commune of Chile?

My guess is that after spending time in Valparaiso Indiana, this song was not written about Valparaiso Indiana!
Did you notice where they said "Such a beautiful place?"

Neither popcorn or a university where students wish they had other scenery then cows and a Walmart parking lot would qualify for that description. Notice that you did not hear pickups honking and cows. Obviously, this was written about Valparaiso, Chile! LOL.

Come on, Hoosiers, turn your brains on. It won't kill you, I promise. =)
The most beautiful song in the last 2 years!

Beautiful song... they were GREAT in concert! Jacob Valenzuela (trumpet) blows me away.

It sounds like a little Iron and Wine on this cut.  I do like it when they collaborate...

Well, at least music from their corner of the world. But yes go see them. Excellent live band.
If you ever get a chance to see these guys, do yourself a favor. They define live world music. Unbelievable talent on display.
I see what you did there Bill!  Previous song, Bruce Cockburn mentions sitting in a bar listening to Superchunk and Friends of Dean Martinez.  2 guys from FoDM went on to form Calexico.

i love this guy's voice

I doubt either of these structures survived Feb 2010.

  I believe that this is the Brighton Hostal and if so, yes it did survive the earthquake. Amazing!

Indeed very soothing for neuropsych homework!!{#Angel}
Very nice!
soothing...
Pretty damn good. I first came across these guys on the Por Vida comp, I just love the way they approach music.
8 > 7...don't think i've ever bumped anything down before.  Guess i just couldn't deal with it in the rubbish company of the last 2 tracks.

Like it! Nice to see one of those bands that emerged from the 90's still putting out good stuff! Most of these bands have grown stale over time, but not them!{#Cheers}
A friend of mine who lives in Valparaiso, Chile, lost his house in the recent earthquake . . . literally "carried to dust" . . . . {#Cry}  Fortunately, his wife and son got out with only minor scrapes and bruises, and my friend wasn't injured at all.

This CD is sooogood, and seeing these guys live here in Carrboro was amazing - so good, that we are going to fly to Tucson to see them next Sunday.  We're groupies at 50!

This is more like it.  A cool song i haven't heard before.  Never too many stray tracks on RP.
I really like Calexico, but this song reminds me a bit too much of that "Static On The Radio" song that I hear all too often on here.
This album has been spending a great deal of time being played on my iPod and in my CD player, highly recommend it.
Orsm album, great band. Thanks for the intoduction RP.

oh yeah, i need to hear this song, good song, thanks :)

From Wikipedia:

They have recorded a number of albums on Quarterstick Records, while their 2005 EP In the Reins recorded with Iron & Wine has reached the Billboard 200 album charts...It was announced in June 2008 that their new sixth studio LP would be called 'Carried to Dust' and will feature Sam Beam of Iron & Wine, Douglas McCombs of Tortoise and Pieta Brown.

This song is perfectly balanced - percussion, vocals, trumpets. It just kind of flows along. Nice.
I think that I'm going to have to buy this album... everything I've heard so far is a solid 8 → 9

Thanks RP!  Best Station in the World
