on a hot summer wind that the night had blown in
a vision a siren in black,
with green velvet eyes and a porcelain smile
the fireflies danced in her hair
she said "please can you help me,
i'm lost and i've nowhere to go,
please can you be the kindest soul?"

well i couldn't resist her undauntable charm
as she brushed passed me through the door,
there was something inside burned i just couldn't hide,
i'd never seen beauty before
"please can i stay, for my body is weak to the bone,
and can you tell me are we alone?"

heaven is only one kiss away
and i can take you as long as we stay

well, the first lie i told was my wife
had been gone one year ago to this day
and i still hear her cries in the trembling night
and the nightmares just won't go away
"please come close and look deep in my eyes"
and i watched them turn black as night

heaven is only one kiss away,
and i can take you as long as we stay
heaven is only one kiss away
hells here on earth boy so drink for today

well i watched her lay sprawling, beckoning and calling,
burning holes right through the floor
and the wind started howling
and my hands started shaking
and the smell of death rose through the air
"this is the last thing that i'll ask of you,
embrace me tonight and let us take flight"
her siren song seeped slowly into my head
as i drew her close to my lips
and as they gently touched i felt a terrible rush
as the life was crushed right from my heart
with my last breath i watched
the black angel of death spread her wings in bliss
for she had stolen my soul through a kiss

heaven is only one kiss away
and i can take take you as long as we stay
heaven is only one kiss away
hell's here on earth boy so drink for today

It's a cool groove; nice production. The cover art is pretty cool too.

Someone once said of the group Elastica, "They play a good tune, and they don't take up a lot of your time doing it".  I was reminded of that amusing observation when I read some of the earlier commentary on this song.  Elastica's average song length is well under three minutes, more like 2:45.

What's wrong with this picture?  If I like a song (as I do this one, a lot) I am not likely to complain about how long it is.  In fact, the longer, the better!  But then, I don't suffer from ADD...

Oh Aegean, you do go on, though...{#Tongue-out}
Another great song I first heard here on RP. I love the way the story unfolds. There's a small but persistent niche of songs about death and this one fits very nicely into it.

At least two minutes too long...maybe four.
Very much like Cohen - obviously, this guy has modeled his voice after the great Leonard! I like it (as well as the girl) - sounds great!

Love this group; this song isn't among their best work, but their albums are great. Are they still around, haven't heard anything by them recently?
Silly Cohen clone, doesn't fit my ear.

ps can you please stop now.

I agree.  Not sure if its cause I am currently listening at a lower bit rate but I am really not enjoying the female voice.

Don't care for the thin, high-pitched, waifish female voice.

I thought it was Cohen until about 3 minutes into the song when i suddenly started to think it was someone collaborating with Calexico...

Better be a high cliff.

The singer needs to smoke more.

Breathy, understated ballad style is how I would have described the vocals before I read all these suggestive combinations of Cohen and Waits.

I think the female backup helps but I'm not sure....

Baseline RP score: 3
Leonhard Cohen resemblance: +4
Interesting lyrics: +2
Too long: -1
Musically simple: -1
Lacking the power of Cohen's voice: -1

Which makes 6
{#Yes}   Like it.  Yes it goes on for a while, but it is good.
Nice tune, great guitar sound.
This song is about twice as long as it needs to be.

What's that sound? Ah, it's the sound of my wallet opening yet again, thanks to RP. {#Yes}

These type of plodding, death marches seem to be in great abundance these days (sez me, Mr. Old Guy).

I really like this, sweet harmonies.

This is a nice song to play on your car radio as you drive at a high speed over a cliff.

Sorry to say: I gave it 7. But then it seemed to drone on forever and so it dived to a 3, which - according to Bill's description of that score - is exactly right.

If by bit you mean a slight resemblance to the to his sound/feel then OKay. I wouldn't compare the content though. This is OKay, but not great.

Imagine your song on RP
a little like Mike Ness too!
Crime & City Solution + Calexico too... ...but it's quite good, anyway.
...and Nick Cave...
Reminds me of M. Ward, but that's a good thing; excellent cut. . .
He sounds like a Tom Waits who hasn't gone bad.
sounds like a Cohen cowboy song Lennie, Curley and Hoss on the set of Bonanza good vide, especially when the map goes up in flames

I enjoy this group a lot..you can really see how they've developed their sound over their albums. Most are excellent and enjoyable to listen to through all their albums.
Rescinded. My comment was intended for the previous track.
Inspired by Cohen maybe?
...coarse and billowy; i like this... ...this feels oddly like i've heard it before, often, although surely i haven't...
