She was born on a Brighton pier
To a gypsy mother and a bucket of tears
Her good looks coulda sailed a ship
But her will alone coulda sunk it

Funny thing about money for sex
You might get rich
But you die by it

It's gonna be a close call
Gonna be a close call

Tell me now what would you do
Hanging back with the brutes
Hustlin' a pickpocket
That's no way to get rich

It's gonna be a close call
Gonna be a close call
Gonna be a close call
Gonna be a close call

Business woman with good sense
If you live at all, you're gonna die by it
Funny thing about money for sex
You might get rich, but then...

It's gonna be a close call
Gonna be a close call
Gonna be a close call
Gonna be a close call

It's those pentatonic minor riffs that the guitarist is playing that gives it a sort of "Eastern" sound.

Those riffs are awesome, it definitely adds flavor to the song.

She really has a Cobain vibe.  I'm thinking Cobain on the Unplugged album singing Meat Puppets' "Lake of Fire".  Anyone?

Edit: I should add that I'm not familiar with the original, so maybe it reminds someone of Meat Puppets instead of Kurt Cobain!

Was just thinking the same. This definitely reminds me of Nirvana and the Meat Puppets. I like it!
Actually reminded me of Fever Ray's 'Keep the Streets Empty For Me'

Great lines!

IMHO that's the only redeeming part about this song.. Just not doing it for me otherwise.

She is NO Aimee Mann or 'Til Tuesday, that is for sure.

I have nothing to adenoids.
Ooh - now I want a bucket of cheese too

You mean Jennifer Aniston as Lucinda in Derailed, Right ?  {#Stupid}trekhead wrote:

It's the guitars that do it.

You might bring up that idea of changing singers with Dengue Fever. Every day. Please.
This reminds me of Dengue Fever. If they changed singers.

Please dont play this again its terrible..

What a dreadful song!   I walked all the way across the room to turn it off!

What do you mean 'or'.  Those are both Aimee Mann...

.. And Jenny is what she is.  I like her just fine, even if she's not Aimee.
Love this band - intelligent lyrics with meaning and humour. A talented bunch - more Rilo Kiley on RP please.

Wow.  That's all I have to say there...

Awesome.
Nice hollow guitar sound.  The song is worth listening to just for that reason.
Not convinced that she wants to be.

Thank god that's over.

Go listen to "Under the Blacklight" and you'll hear a blatant Til Tuesday style and sound rip-off.

No you wont.

100% agreed

Oh Jenny

I'm surprised only one person made the 'til Tuesday link. Her voice (at least on this song) is a dead ringer for Aimee Mann's. I like it.
Really dig the album!

Could play this one back-back with the Minnie Driver song. You know, actors turned singers. Trying to think of others and drawing a blank. Usually it goes the other way - musicians turned actors. Glen Frey, Little Steven, Will Smith, etc.

Not much cover here! And yes, the Big Country influence is here and is GOOD! Nice song.
ooooooooooooo ooooooooooooo aahh aaaaaaahhh need to post more on this song so I can't see the upskirt shot, it makes me lose my focus!

The guitar riffs remind me of Big Country. I'm not sure if that's good or bad .
still like this cover better...
Been listening to this album for a few months now...the song and album really do grow on you, loving it!
Different and interesting with some hints of Kate Bush and Lisa Anderson. I'm enjoying this.

No. I'll agree with you anyway. She still sounds a little like Kate though.

An instant 8!
I agree with the Amazon review: "very radio friendly, mainstream, toned down, overproduced." If I knew where to find that little icon of the smiley pounding his head against a wall, I'd put that right here.

LA Times review, 2 page plus spread liked it. Indicated that they are going in a different direction then previous albums and they expected to get trashed.

funny. i read two 4-star reviews this week.
Very good song... Caught my attention while I was packing and had to see who it was. Now I have to go buy this CD so I can pack it up too.

Second new tune on RP from this band in less than 4 hours. And both aren't bad at all.
