Something's beating on the wall on the other side
Strange lovers moan each others names on by-hour sheets for the very first time
One of them's James, the other's some name, she changes every time she lies across his bed

But the light of the moon leads the way towards the morning
And the sun, the sun's well on the way too soon to know and
Oh, oh my god, whatever, etc.

If I could I'd fold myself away like a card table
A concertina or a murphy bed, I would
But I wasn't made that way so you know instead

I'm open all night and the customers come to stay
And everybody tips but not enough to knock me over
And I'm so tired, I just worked two shifts

But the light of the moon leads the way towards the morning
And the sun, the sun's well on its way too soon to know and
Oh, oh my god, oh my god, whatever, etc.

Maybe, as a "professional", he wanted that round-wound sound for this particular track.  Amateur.

The cigarette isn't the point, it's secondary - it's his posture, his expression, the composition of the photo. The rumpled jacket, matching his hair, his slouching back echoing the stretched hand. The image looks very casual and natural yet very graceful and posed - tough to balance both.
The type isn't my favourite, but I like that it's in one simple sector at the top, and it's provides a clean contrast with the fluidity of the pose. The simple hit of colour is a good contrast with the black & white imagery.
But the way that hard vertical edge in the middle top and the hard horizontal edge in the lower left creates a sector for his head, hands (and cig) and isolates against the rest of the scene make the image for me.
And yet, with all this, it still looks like a casual snap-shot. Lovely work.

Nice song, but after "Lady Writer" ? Buzzkill.

I completely agree, and even with all the "misses" my IPod has more Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown than any other artist.

His live shows are an especially dicey proposition, but when he's on he's magic.

I love this song.  Thanks for ignoring the haters and playing one of the decades' most talented song-writers.

We had tickets for the Oasis show in London, Ontario that got cancelled after Noel Gallagher was attacked in Toronto.  As if that weren't bad enough, Ryan was opening for them.

Two of our favorites on one night up in smoke.  We were hosed.

I never would have heard of Ryan without RP.

I'm giving him big props for recording "Nervous Breakdown" by Black Flag for the Rise Above benefit CD for the West Memphis Three. I don't think it would get played here, but it's worth a listen. Guy made it his own and that's not any task. Oh, and he didn't get paid to do it, either.

Sorry. No excuse for bad behavior. True. I haven't heard much about Ryan Adams's antics, but when you hear that a (very talented, highly respected) musician (not Adams) refused to go on stage unless the producers give him a few thousand dollars more than agreed (and this is right before going on stage, and right after confirming the show is sold out), you really don't want to be doing anything that puts more money in his pocket, be it buying CDs or going to shows. Damn, that's a run-on sentence if I ever saw one.

He has a bit of the Billy Corrigan problem - he thinks everything he does needs to be recorded and released. That's not to say he's isn't extremely talented, but I think he should brush up on the Rule of Nines (for every 10 ideas you have nine will suck but one will be great). Yes, I know there is a Mathematically Rule of Nines too. I don't think that one will help Ryan Adams.

i saw him with phil and friends at red rocks, and he did not leave a good impression. besides messing up the song lyrics to numerous songs (all while playing one of jerry's guitars...blasphemy!), he gave off a really agro vibe. having said that, i'm still trying to give him a chance because he seems to have some talent in there somewhere. but then bob dylan comes on, and i remember what a truly talented songwriter sounds like, and i give up on him again. it's quite the dilemma...
Yeah nice song, sounds cool, etc.

Quite. I've always had an irrational dislike for any song which has "etcetera" in it, which is lazy on at least two levels: rhyming and lack of imagination. Yeah, like, whatever...
When I saw this song I thought "that must be a nonsensical title because how could you sing it?" And then he sang it... Terrible.

I like this song, but then I like Ryan Adams. He desperately needs a haircut, though. Edited to add: I read a short article on RA on CNN.com in which his record company says that he has 170+ unreleased songs in the vault. Holy cats.
Excellent record! Where does this guy buy his inspiration from?
Great CD.

the easy tiger bit... supposed to be a play on "easy there, tiger..." like, "slow down." i guess ryan chose it cause he acknowledges the fact that he's been churning out albums very quickly and not paying much mind to the overall consistency and quality of them, so with this one he did, and named it easy tiger... i read that somewhere, but i can't be bothered to remember where, exactly.
