Without a warning you broke my heart
You took it, darlin' and you tore it apart
You left me sitting in the dark, crying
You said, your love for me was dying
I'm begging you, baby, baby, please
I'm begging you baby, baby, please
Turn on the light, let it shine on me
Turn on your love light, let it shine on me
Let it shine, shine, shine, let it shine
And I wanna know, [Incomprehensible]
I get a little lonely in the middle of the night
I need you, darlin', to make things alright
Come on, baby, come on, please
Come on, baby, baby, please
Turn on the light, let it shine on me
[Incomprehensible] on your love light, let it shine on me
A little bit higher, a little bit higher
Just a little bit higher, a little bit higher
A little bit higher
Come on, baby, come on, please
I'm begging you, baby, I'm down on my knees
Turn on the light, let it shine on me
Turn on your love light, let it shine on me
I feel alright, I feel alright
I feel alright, I feel alright, baby, let it shine

I've known this as a Dead Live staple for years but always wondered who did the originl. Thanks Bill. Awesome!
I once saw him, BB King, and Albert King play the grand old Fox Theatre in STL. It was my first exposure to a live blues show.
How to play a walking bass line. Killer.
The live Tom Jones version bleeds blood.

chinaski : You are absolutely right!! My bad! I was confused. The album I was thinking of is called 'The Music Never Stopped', and is original versions of songs the Dead covered. I have it, and the below mentioned Deadicated. Both favourites.

grahamdillabough: The album you mention titled Deadicated is a collection of original Grateful Dead songs covered by other performers and Turn On Your Love Light does not appear on it. I have that album and enjoy it very much. The Wiki about Deadicated:

It can be purchased online but at a steep price: https://www.amazon.com/Deadicated-Various-Artists/dp/B000002VHS
The Dead's cover of Turn on Your Love Light appears on their 1969 album titled Live Dead. Here is a YouTube stream of that very track:

And LEAVE it on!!
As for an entire Grateful Dead album comprised of songs originally done by other artists...um...I don't know that such a thing exists.

Looking at that album cover, I gotta wonder if Bobby is Laurence Fishburne's backwoods-country cousin.
I heard this on an album called 'Deadicated' comprising the original versions of songs the Grateful Dead played. Well worth getting if you can find it... it was out of print last time I checked.

Sadly, the whole process is pre-recorded and distributed from a remote location these days. Decades ago a bunch of us college kids prank-called a poor DJ at a sleazy-listening station and demanded that he play our requests instead of Muzak. "Sorry, man, it's all on tape and I don't call the shots" was his (good-natured) response. He couldn't screw things up like Dead Air Dave even if he wanted to.

No man, we know Pigpen didn't pen this classic but dammit, he did do it some justice in his time!
I mean, maybe the Dead Can Dance but they sure as shit couldn't sing. Mr. McKernan being the lone exception... he did a wonderful job to bring this song to a whole new audience.

I saw this dude at a little bar in Dyersburg, TN that was about the size of a 2500 sq. ft. house. Hell, it may have been a house, on any other night.
But Bobby 'Blue' Bland set the place to rocking, and didn't let up for over 2 hours. Unbelievable show, one I will always treasure.
Thanks for the "memory gouge" Bill. I get that a lot on here.
