I was at this carnival just a few years ago.
No big deal, Ferris wheel, the same old stuff you know.
I and wandered around the grounds until I found this little tent
A man outside made a speech, and this is how it went:

She walks, she talks,
She crawls on her belly like a reptile.
It was the same old line except for one part,
Said it don't cost no money, you got to pay with your heart

Oh Sharon, what do you do to these men?
You know the same rowdy crowd that was here last night is back again.

Well I went inside and I looked around for a seat.
The lights went low, and the drums played a beat.
Then this girl come out, dressed in a scarf and sneeze.
She did a little dance that made me weak in the knees.
She danced like her back had no bone
While the band played a tone called the Main Street Moan.

She smiled a smile the whole world could see.
Then she turned her head, and she looked straight at me.
I must have jumped at least six feet in the air,
And when I come down, that girl wasn't there.

Oh Sharon, what do you do to these men?
You know the same rowdy crowd that was here last night is back again.

And out come this dude with curly read hair
He had a big bushy beard, he was built like a bear.
He said you stop all your shouting, there's no more to the show
And if you wanna breathe right, you all better go.
I didn't hang around, I headed straight for the door,
But on my way out, I heard that big bear roar

Oh Sharon, what do you do to these men?
You know the same rowdy crowd that was here last night is back again.

Every night that that show played, I was right there.
I stayed out of reach of that mean red bear.
And it was just like the man had said in his speech at the start,
'cause when the carnie left town it took a piece of my heart.
And I still a funny feeling deep down in my bones,
Every time I hear a band play that Main Street Moan.

Oh Sharon, what do you do to these men?
You know the same rowdy crowd that was here last night is back again.

First heard this on WMMR in Philly when it came out. I had no idea he was from Philly, he just got played a lot there and did a lot of shows in the area. As the disk jockeys got replaced, some moved on to WIOQ (sp?) where he got a fair bit of airplay and promotion.

Fun guitarist at live shows, he always did something that made you go "WOW". .
I think of my old friend, Jeff J. from upstate NY who used to play this and other DB gems all summer.  Toke up, Jeff, they're playin Sharon!

My dad has always used the phrase, "crawl on [your] belly like a reptile" and now I know where he got it from!

David!
I grew up with this. Seen him several times. Thanks so, so much for playing this today. Turned a glum, ho-hum morning into a little party at my desk.
"And she went. . .
And then she did a. . ."

Edit: Also one of those musicians you've heard so many times but never knew it was him.

Check out his "How Late'll Play 'Til?" It's a double studio/live album set. David covers a few different genre on that recording.
{#Devil_pimp}ive had this vynl since it first came out and yes it's still so very zesty!

Oh...I'll go with an 8 on this one, first time hearing it in full and liking it a lot....

The song had been playing for at least a minute when my brain tilted and I said to myself, "That's the guitar lick from 'Johnny Ryall"!" {#Lol}

A scroll through the comments shows me I'm way late to this party, but in my defense, this is the first time I've heard this song on RP.
Really like this song. Never heard it before... I'm a big Tragically Hipp fan and this reminds me of a live version of New Orleans is Sinking.
Makes me think of the Carnivale show that aired on HBO a while back...
Never knew this is where it came from.  Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This still sounds derivative to me.

"Don't Try to Lay No Boogie Woogie on the King of Rock and Roll" came out a year earlier.
Yet another "never heard before; where the hell have I been?" blast from RP.
Thanks again Bill for continually broadening my horizons!
"Then this girl come out, dressed in a scarf and sneeze.

This is hilarious. Never heard this song before. Definitely will check it out.
This artist kinda makes me think....Zappa/Zevon. Totally cool cut though!! Enjoyable listen!
I once saw him with Commander Cody.  It was a great time.  Both bands where great fun.
Really like this song. I wish David Bromberg had recorded more songs. I bet he had some good stuff. It seems from the playing on RP this is his only recorded song.

Reminds me of a Long John Baldry tune which I definitely prefer.
You guys know he played on Dylan's "Self Portrait" and "New Morning" right? And with Phoebe Snow, Edie Brickell, Carly Simon, Ringo, John Prine, Rick Derringer, Link Wray, Willie Nelson...

Yay for Bromberg! Saw him at the 2018 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass fest.
I freaked out the first time I heard this. So shared it with my dad. And he was like, oh, totally, old news. But again, he saw Led Zeppelin at some bar in South Bend before they blew up.

Thanks for a nod to us geezers on the planet. Yes, I agree, sometimes music made in a musician's late years, especially if one's lost voice or dexterity, conveys nuance and feeling that couldn't be achieved the raw power of youth.
this guy has always been "the tits"
I had this playing low in the background.  I thought it was some crappy Rocky Horror Picture Show song.  Started paying attention.  Turns out it's some crappy David Bromberg song.
Even with the volume set to Zero, this one still irritates me!
Wow, I haven't heard this in YEARS!  I think it could be my next Belly Dance Comedy routine!
David Bromberg opening for The New Riders of the Purple Sage was the first concert I ever went to .....in 1976 at the Jersey shore..Asbury Park. It was awesome. {#Angel}
Could someone please upload "Will Not Be Your Fool"...Please?
Hoo boy. The same Bamn Dromberg song. It's a shame this is the only song David Bromberg ever recorded. Time for Pandora.

Heard an interview with Bromberg last Saturday afternoon on my local public radio station. Great insight into his career and music in general. I wish I had a link to share with you. It was a fascinating discussion.
"dressed in a scarf and a sneeze" I love that line.

Did Lou sing ballads like this?

This reminds me a bit of "Dig Lazarus Dig" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, a band that Bill apparently greatly admires.
When I first heard this, the vocal sorta reminded me of Bruce Dern.   then I thought it would sound pretty cool to hear Bruce Dern singing this song...
Had to check if it was Lou Reed or not. Not

Gee. I wish David had recorder more than this one song his entire recording career.{#Frown} You'd think he'd have recorded "Deliah", or "Mr. Bojangles", or something.

Sing it David....
a little element of Lou Reed?
One of the Best live albums is "How Late Do Y'all Play 'Till"
this guy sings some great folk and blues, doesn't he? a friend just gave me a bunch of his stuff. he has the most "knowing" voice, I love it.
Saw David recently, what a great performer.  He really knows how to work a crowd.  Played this, and some nice lady did a bit of a belly dance throughout the aisles of the arena...quite fun.
Oh boy! One of my all time favorites! The same rowdy crowd that was here last night is back again.....ooooooh ohhhh Sharon! Jumping and dancing in the office.
Hmmm HMM! Yummy

David Bromberg is such a talented artist. I just wish he had released more than this one song!
Tried to suffer through this one with the volume set to one, but just couldn't do it.

'ORRIBLE!
DEELISHUS!  Yeah, baby.  Dirty funk ..... with a saxophone!

Keep 'em coming, big boy!  "The same rowdy crowd that was here last night is back again!"
horrible{#No}
Not for me!!{#No}
Such random fortuitousness - prior to now only heard this track's opening few bars at the top of Johnny Ryall by the Beastie Boys (also a great track). This is a funky little ditty! and suddenly I'm also getting a few references...

Don't let the glasses fool ya ....
Or,..  his wonderful live version of Statesboro Blues,...  or Main Street Moan.
There you go again Bill. So much great Bromberg out there, and you still play only the carny song. Try anything off "How Late'll You Play Till?" Or just play Delia. That is one great David song. But please, a little variety?
I was kind...gave it a 2
He's still around - https://www.davidbrombergfineviolins.com/

Love Bromberg! I saw Bromberg, Hartford, and a handful of otheres at the Philly Folk Fest ~72. The only instruments they used were their hands. If you closed your eyes you'd swear there was a horn section on stage. One of a kind.
reminds me of one of my favorite album covers...

There are many, many reasons I love listening to Radio Paradise. Alas, this is not one of them.
Okay - this really deserves to be followed by a Warren Zevon song, and maybe a John Prine song, or Loudon Wainright III, or Frank Zappa...  I'm totally loving this. {#Dancingbanana_2}
As a pre-MTV kid, I couldn't get the picture of actor Bruce Dern delivering these lyrics out of my head.
I have always loved this song - great to hear it again!

I don't think I'd say this is exactly 'representative' of what David Bromberg does, either, though he always seemed 'quirky' to me, and this fits that. He is also an excellent guitarist with the ability to play a very wide array of styles. Haven't heard him in years (used to play him on my radio show in college all the time back in the '70's) - anybody know what he's doing now?

I read that he is in the antique violin business. The version of Sharon on 'You Should See the Rest of the Band' is live and really excellent guitar work. He makes the guitar talk, really talk. The cover is a Gahan Wilson piece of art.
...kinda of zappa-esque...
