Won't you please let me go?
These words lie inside they hurt me so
And I'm not the kind that likes to tell you
Just what I want to do
I'm not the kind that needs to tell you
Just what you want me to

I saw you this morning
I thought that you might like to know
I received your message in full a few days ago
I understood every word that it said
And now that I've actually heard it
You're going to regret

And I'm not the kind that likes to tell you
Just what you want me to
You're not the kind that needs to tell me
About the birds and the bees

Do you find this happens all the time?
Crucial point one day becomes a crime
And I'm not the kind that likes to tell you
Just what I want to do
And I'm not the kind that needs to tell you

I've lost you
I've lost you
I've lost you
I've lost you
I've lost you

I'm actually really enjoying this cover today, I don't know if it's my mood or if I've just come to enjoy covers that are different from the originals more, but I'm diggin' it.

au contraire mon frere. . . this is an awesome remake of a much beloved New Order classic. . . IMHO, of course

This sounds like a bad version of Can't always get want you want at the beginning and then goes down hill from there. What a waste of bandwidth...can I get those electrons back? {#Crashcomp}
good job!!! {#Clap}

Well said. I prefer the New Order version, but this is a welcome change from the frenetic teen angst of the original. If Phillips borrowed some chords from "You Can't Always Get What You Want"...big deal. I don't think he's trying to ride the Stones' coattails. Had no idea he had an album of 80s covers...I'll have to see what he did to "The Killing Moon." I really like his song "Mockingbird."

Big New Order fan....this is gggreat {#Meditate}

still waiting for that to happen.....nope, still not as good.

I don't think it's a blatant or even an intentional rip-off, but I do hear the resemblance.

I agree that the New Order original is better, but give Grant Lee a break. At least it's a variation and not outright mimicry. I can't abide mimicry. And for what this is, it's not as bad as most of you are making it. It's at least a 6. Maybe a 7 for people who like Grant Lee's style (which I'm not partial to).

Sacrilegious!

I've always heard Talking Heads influence in this song.

Grant Lee Phillips does an amazing job on this song. If you like his voice, you should check out 1 Giant Leap, a fantastic documentary featuring some amazing talent, including GLP, Maxi-Jazzy from Faithless and numerous other artists I can't think of right now. Great Project.

The One Giant Leap soundtrack is fantastic, I couldn't agree more.

Ya can't always get what you want... anyone else hear it? It sounds like a "girly-song" sort of a day today, no?
this is my favorite song from the album, and I love the album. am somewhat surprised by the comments on this song, but I suppose people can be a bit precious about their favorite songs when another artist covers them. word to the poster below who said GLP is great in concert. I haven't seen him on his own, but saw him on a tour with others (the brother and sister from Nickel Creek, Glen Phillips from Toad the Wet Sprocket and a young fiddler/singer who is very talented) and he was terrific - very funny and chatty with the audience and, of course, that voice...

I agree. If someone had never heard the New Order song, they would just think this was another good Grant Lee song. By the way Grant Lee Phillips is great in concert.

Yes, I know some decry the use of emoticons as being the death of the English language. I'm here to tell you that some things aren't worth words.
this CD is an interesting concept but not sure of his execution on this song. You really need to "own" a unique reading like this, and I don't think he found the pink slip...

Count me in the New Order crowd. I'm not feeling this cover.

YEAH, no kidding! Can you believe it? I'm surprised they haven't slapped him with a lawsuit, it's such a blatant steal of it!
Well, you know, you can't always get what you want. For me, GLP has been on a slow downward descent ever since Mobilize. Maybe I'm just nostalgic for the Buffalo days... Decent, anyway.
originals are always default better than a cheapened remake
a cover should add something new and not reduce or "cheapen" the original. i suppose this one succeeds

...meh...go write your own song...haha!...
I really enjoyed this cover. While I love the orginal, I can't complain about this guy's vocals. Good stuff.

IMHO covers need to be dead-on copies or unique to stand on their own. I think Grant did a fine job with this one.
I agree!
Maybe it's just the fact that it's 2 am, but this song sounds a lot better than i remember it the last time i rated it. Good enough that I'm gonna look into the album.
"I saw her today at the reception"
I think this does justice to the original, it emphasizes the words well and the song's mood. But who would desecrate their own work years later in a new version? 'Highly unlikely. Recently an acoustic 80s album came out. My response is similar to Dee Snyder's response to the acoustic tunes at the end of metal's heyday--WTF?!
oh the yearning for the original. Sure, the cover is better than average... as covers go... but I can't stop wanting wanting to hear all the things I LOVE about the original. le sigh.
Grant-Lee Phillips doing New Order? Next up, Matthew Sweet doing Joy Division!
either i'm getting used to this album, or this one isn't so bad, or i'm not as in love with the original as i am the others. gotta say this tho, i do like the originals for every track on this album. i should really like to hear the cover of South Central Rain on this album...
OK for a remake of New Order which is a 10.
I rolled my eyes when I first heard this, but quickly came to like it. It's nice to hear a cover that takes chances instead of just "freshening up" an old track with currently popular devices.

loving this CD - esp. this track
Eesh. Not sure about this.
Grant-Lee Phillips AND New Order together! Now there's a winning combination! Yessiree.
"I saw her today at the reception..."
i like when covers highlight how good the original song really is, maybe in a way ya didn't see before. 7.
Wow, a New Order cover that doesn't suck! I'm not gonna run out and buy the cd, but I'm not offended, either.

That's what I was thanking. Veery fine cover. I had to grab my guitar.
New Order meets "Wild Horses".
He looks like an Amish guy in a bad disguise...
This song just makes me want to reach out and hit the snooze button...

I thought his cover of Love My Way was pretty poor (but everyone else seemed to like it), but this cover I really like (yet it seems to be getting pretty poor remarks). He's really made it into his own song. I didn't even realize what it was until the chorus. Good job!
You can't always get what you want... So you steal it
I love the original, but this is pretty 'wow' too. What a cover should be...

Yeah, the original with Bernard Sumner seems to have more emotion in it, but Grant sounds like he's trying for more emotion. Maybe I just don't know his voice very well.

just wanted to be the first to post a comment :) i guess this is as good as the last band - a soft 6">
I recognize this tune, prob from RP. This is not the original, is it?
