Day to day
Where do you want to be?
'Cos now you're trying to pick a fight
With everyone you need

You seem like a soldier
Who's lost his composure
You're wounded and play a waiting game
In no-man's land no-one's to blame

See the world
Find an old fashioned girl
And when all's been said and done
It's the things that are given, not won
Are the things that you want

Empty handed, surrounded by a senseless scene
With nothing of significance
Besides a shadow of a dream
You sound like an old joke
You're worn-out, a bit broke
An' askin me time and time again
When the answer's still the same

See the world
Find an old fashioned girl
And when all's been said and done
It's the things that are given, not won
Are the things that you want

You've got a chance to put things right
So how's it going to be?
Lay down your arms now
And put us beyond doubt
So reach out it's not too far away
Don't mess around now, don't delay

So true, CoJo, I have this one at a 9.....and I'm finding I'm missing your comments....until you're back and even after....Long Live RP!!
On my long-drive playlist now...
I like the live version of this song even better than the album.....
What exactly is an "old fashioned girl" according to Gomez? {#Stupid}
My advice to my son. He took it!
Beginning sounds a bit like Bruce Cockburn
Pretty sweet chorus in this one.

Yup.
I like this too.

Love this song; and this guy's voice

Amazing band. Amazing live -seen them @ Fillmore many times... Extremely well rounded with talented musicians. Song is good.

I heard it too.  But, damn, I really like Gomez.
Didn't think Gomez was the Sha - la - la song kind of a guy.....

I'm starting an all girl goth band called "Morticia"
Auditions start Halloween Night - Must like spiders and look good in a Black Dress

I am a huge Gomez fan and I have all of their CDs. Their all good, but I highly recommend Liquid Skin which I consider one of the 25 best CDs.  It was by far their most successful.  Gomez has not really gotten much praise from the critics though, so I have always been surprised at how much they are played here.  It is one of the major considerations I stick with this station.  I mean, I love them, but not many other people seem to love them like Bill and I do.

I was looking forward to hearing a cover of that song.
Solid 6
I had a fantastic love affair almost completely based on Gomez. I saw the world with an old fashioned girl. What road trips! Too bad the band went bleh in the last while. But, these early albums still bring a tear to my eyes. I used to think of them as the new Beatles. Every song had a wonderful hook, production, singing, musicianship... and the wonderful electronics and electric banjo. Was my all time favorite band until she broke up with me and my little heart. Ah... the Gomez years ! And now, Gomez records are shit, and it's fitting. Too bad. Love this song, love the band they used to be. Time goes on....

I don't know if this is their "best" album, but I find myself playing it a whole lot.
I love this song on a lot of levels. It's a good "kid" song. It's also a good "hope" song, so I don't even care about the technical aspects of it, or the weird connections.... It's just a good song. Here are the cut-and-pasted lyrics, which may or may not be accurate.

It's the things that are given, not won
Are the things that you earned

Empty handed, surrounded by a senseless scene

You're worn out, a bit broken
Asking me time and time again

HAHA yes I picture this song being in a quirky love comedy where the two friends realize they have been soul mates all along and they are running through the rain to hug.
I seem to be full of 7's today. This is a solid 7 almost an 8
I won tix to see them in a private artist showcase this Monday and they cancelled the rest of their tour for voice problems.  Bummer {#Cry}
This song reminds me why I liked Gomez!
The ultimate hit and miss band! This one is a home run, not a grand slam, but a home run. 8

This is lovely..

I forgot how much I like this song. I love the refrain.

Their first album "Bring It On" is their best, I think.  Free and textural, layered with moods.  Runs the gamut from pop to dark dreamy tunes.
Nice recovery from the Death Crabs which preceded it.  8

Lovely and uplifting.  8 —> 9.
Love this song. See the world.....{#Roflol}
I suspect this song is not as "chirpy" as it might sound at first. I could take it as a satire on towing the line, joining the Army, and going off to war.
For some reason, I always thought this was DMB.    Learn something new everyday, right?
This whole album is lyrically challenged... but still a great song!

Dammit!  When I post comments like that I get assaulted as an insensitive clod.  Which I am by the way.  I guess I answered my own question.  I like the muffin idea.  Tuna muffins?

Meh. Typical uninspiring Adult Alternative sugar bomb. I like some of their other stuff, just not this one.
This song always leaves me Wondering Where the Lions Are. Hope he gave a nod to Bruce Cockburn on this album.
Schalalalalalalala.....a solid 7. :arrowu:

haven't been hearing much Gomez on RP lately...? I "almost" forgot about this song, and how happy it makes me to sing along with it, even in my office. thanks, Bill!

Did the same for our Norwegian guest last month here in L.A.; Gomez got a lukewarm response from the gazillion girls there to see The Fray. But they rocked.(and "they're from England!")

This song doesn't get nearly enough play.
Nice guitar pickin
I love this song!! Gomez is one fantastic band!
thanks to my sister for this band!

Yes, likewise. Great tune from a band with plenty of others.
Another great discovery listening to Radio Paradise. Thank you! Francesco
Another example of a band that's alright, but is simply ruined by the way the singer's voice grates on my nerves.:frustrated: :fire: Would be listenable and maybe even enjoyable otherwise.
I simply cannot get enough of this album / this band.
I thought, oh good, an old Bruce Cockburn song, 'Wondering where the lions are' to be precise. Longest 'sample' of a folk guitar riff that I've heard.
Love it! Great album, too.
I get this music...it's fresh, I feel happy when I sing the words...great song, great CD...very simple really, very appealing.
Says Gomez, ''Morticia--that's French!!!'' (kiss, kiss, kiss) C'est sur que la langue de Moliere est tres romantique. Je l'aime beaucoup, et je la parle chaque fois que possible! (bec, bec, bec)
This singer (don't know his name) has such a distinctive voice. . . I like it, but it does kind of sound like he's got a mouth full of spit he's trying not to lose. Heh!
I was relaxing on the Turkish coast (Olimpos) in a tree house a hundred yards from the Mediterranean when i first heard "Whipping Piccidily" in 1999. I wandered about until I found a group of Brits and asked what they were listening to... been a fan ever since! Check out the early albums! The new stuff is good, but Bring It On and Liquid Skin are fantastic!!
Yea, all over the map, 'See the World' with Radio Paradise, without which, who knows, may never have cottoned on to Gomez otherwize? :good-vibes: Love 'em!
I really enjoy this song and this band. They are all over the map.
Seems like Gomez does my kind of music. I have to get that CD!
The whole 'sha-la-la-la' thing on this album is really hacky. I get they're semi-doing a paradoy, but the music off their first album was more than listenable. Everything I've heard from this one is down right annoying.

Thanks for that. I'd been listening and vaguely wondering why it sounded familiar

Yes, I hear it too, but love this song and cd for itself! Bought through the RP Amazon link, of course!
I didn't really like this when I first got it; it lacked the edge of their earlier music, but it's grown on me.
For the opening, they have been listening to Bruce Cockburn. Wondering where the Lions are.

Check out the LRC; interesting (sometimes), eclectic (indeed).
Watching, waiting, hoping to like them just a littttle bit more. Shoe-gazy + country = ?? 6 for this, my fave from this album so far.
I like this Gomez a lot better than the stuff from "Bring it On." This is nice, didn't think it was Gomez at first, until I recognized the voice!

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but, no, this is not true. Mars did pass close to Earth, around 35,000,000 miles, on August 27, 2003. On August 27th of this year, Mars will be trailing the sun, making it nearly impossible to view, low in the west sky at sunset. For some reason, the idiots who roam the Internet seem to enjoy spreading falsehoods, rumors, innuendo and falsehoods. There are numerous hoax sites you can visit to learn the truth about these thing. Snopes.com is a favorite. Peace.

Out of the little bit I've heard, I like the Bring It On album the best. Good talent.
Talk about a band getting better and better with maturity. Gomez is that band...Wonderful disc.
Love these guys!

Yes, I think their older stuff is way better. Check out "Bring it On" which is a great album. Or "Liquid Skin" which is a close 2nd.

Yes... originally from my hometown of Sheffield, UK, my favourite album is their debut, 'Bring It On'. It was initially unknown but they won the annual 'Mercury Music Prize' (a single prestigious award, normally given to new acts) and then enjoyed some chart success. 'Liquid Skin' was their next release and made them alot more famous and it's a good album, but to be honest they kind kind of lost me after that. Got a bit too, er... smooth, too produced.
I guess I pretty much agree with horstman. I read some user review on metacritic which i think pretty well sums it up: "This is Gomez showing us How To Operate in the corporate radio world. Fans of Gomez will immediately sense the album is not everything Gomez can be, but it will attract a lot of new fans who will suddenly understand how amazing this band is." That being said their live show is just great.
Love this song more and more- bump up  to 8!

OK... with this... I officially dislike Gomez.
I have all of Gomez's albums and bought "How We Operate" the day it came out. I have listened to it several times and while it has a few great songs, the ablum as a whole is rather disappointing. In your gun is so complete that in retrospect, this album is a flop. I really expected alot more from this band. If this is the direction that Gomez is taking, I'll relish the older albums and forget the newer bands direction.
Love this band! Great song.
How nice :)

The songwriting is shared among the entire band. They have three different singers which can make a difference in the song.

Great song! Can't wait for the new album.
That was 2 U2 records and 2 Gomez' records in the past 6 hours. Isn't that a bit overdone? Do you want us to get sick?
Can't wait to see these guys at sasquatch this summer :cowboy:

Gets a Godlike from me, this is very Gomez-ish, Me liek!
OKish. Might take some time to grow on me.
Looks like I'll be getting ready to purchase this one when it comes out. And for those who haven't seen these guys live, I highly suggest you catch them if you can. They put on a great show.
wow!! very interesting -- was anxiously waiting to hear something off the new CD. i'm diggin' it. lookin' forward to their ever-popular performance at bonnaroo.
Hell, I'm still recovering from In Our Gun and they drop this on me! Ok, I'm slow. Excellent stuff.
