I'm gonna wait till the midnight hour
That's when my love comes tumbling down
I'm gonna wait till the midnight hour
When there's no one else around

I'm gonna take you, girl, and hold you
And do all the things I told you
In the midnight hour
Yes I am, oh, yes I am
One more thing I just want to say right here

I'm gonna wait till the stars come out
And see that twinkle in your eyes
I'm gonna wait till the midnight hour
That when my love begins to shine

You're the only girl I know
That really love me so
In the midnight hour
Oh yeah, in the midnight hour
Yeah, all right, play it for me one time

I'm gonna wait till midnight hour
That's when my love comes tumbling down
I'm gonna wait, way in the midnight hour
That's when my love begins to shine

Just you and I
Oh baby, huh, just you and I
Nobody around baby, just you and I
All right
You know what, I'm gonna hold you in my arms
Just you and I, oh yeah
In the midnight hour
Oh baby, in the midnight hour

It was also covered by numerous artists (The Young Rascals, The Mirettes, Roxy Music) in the 60's, 70's, and 80's prior to its inclusion in The Commitments.  It was a staple of Grateful Dead sets for years.

This is one of the few songs whose covers are good >80% of the time.
GODLIKE!!! ICONIC!!!
When this came out, Low power (5kw) WMCA  570 AM NYC (The Good Guys) used to play this a lot! High power  (50kw) WABC 770 AM NYC, didn't play a lot of black artists.
My first school dance around1967
One of the all-time great voices.
Several years ago, I don't remember where, I heard Don McLean say that the meaning of American Pie was that he never had to work again.

Oh Bill...

Take Me to the River followed by Midnight Hour.

That is very very cool. Was he a nice guy? Sad that he died at only 64.

I'll agree that it's sad he died at 64 when I'm 65.  Right now 64 isn't a given.

It was a pretty iconic track in it's own right, reaching #1 on the R&B charts and the Top 40 of the Billboard Top 100 in 1965.  It was also covered by numerous artists (The Young Rascals, The Mirettes, Roxy Music) in the 60's, 70's, and 80's prior to its inclusion in The Commitments.  It was a staple of Grateful Dead sets for years.

Wilson Pickett came to my high school (Walt Whitman in Bethesda) to play a dance (maybe a prom) in 1966 or 1967. I was the photographer for the school newspaper so got to go backstage to his show at the Washington Colosseum several weeks before and hang out in his dressing room as his chums would drop in. That was very very cool.

Classic, duh! This was our frat anthem in 67 in Knoxville, just before the advent of 420 and hippiedom ripped our frat asunder and we all cleaved off into Led Zepplen or stayed in 60s soul. I cleaved with Led, but the Soul era danceable music--and still is. And all still important. Thanks for this chestnut, B and R! Again!

Now, THAT's how you do it son! (I'm talking to you, Mr. Byrne ... very respectfully, of course ... ;-)) {#Dancingbanana}
I have been fascinated with this song ever since I read Stephen King's "Four Past Midnight" as a kid.  I believe he opens it with the first verse of this song.  Seems so harmless, yet there's something lurking just below the surface... I get a similar feeling from CCR's Midnight Special ever since seeing it used on the Twilight Zone...
Classic Classic CLASSIC!!!!!!
{#Eh}
Now were talking. Classic feel good song..
I had to walk back over to the radio to make sure I had rated this a 9. Yup.
Love Wilson Pickett. Always love this tune. Many fond memories of being in a band and playing this right at New Year's. Sigh.
Yesssssss!

You have sufficiently demonstrated your immaturity. Moreover, methinks you are a troll, but I hope that you'll prove me wrong. And that you'll grow up and get a different set of priorities. Being first to use that icon is NOT a goal I'd aspire to, but if it floats your boat, have fun with it. Just stay out of my way.

This one,I have spun a few times ! #9

Yeah, some of us are old.  (You young punks wish you get to live this long.)  Reminds me of AM radio in the woods waiting around for "the midnight hour."  I had a driver's license then, so must have been at least 15.

I was so much older then, but I'm younger than that now

I'd give it a 10, but I don't do "godlike."

Yeah, and you rated Pink higher than Stevie Ray Vaughn! And you're from TX, for Christ's sake!

What do you want, a medal? Or a chest to pin it on? {#Wave}

Classic rock-blues.. luv it.. of course it is better live.
My parents used to own a restaurant, and I used to DJ on New Year's Eve. I used to play this song all the time. I love it! Great choice, Bill.
Alright..play it for me one time !
I remember listening to this on a 45....still chunked in a box somewhere.
Fabulous.
Wicked.
I love this tune. Ahhh, the memories.
This is why people my age exist (may people 10-20 years older I'm not to sure of the dates)

Me too. My father took a high school friend and me to NYC. He let us loose on a dance club called "The Cheeta" where we heard soul music and this song for the first time. What a memory.
great tune. covered by many bands, but the original will always shine.
Awwwwww yeah!!!
No better. None.

Freshman year of college for me!
yeah, yeah, it's fine. What about something of Wilson's, anything other than this overplayed song. Enough. It's not the song's fault, but I just don't need to hear it again for a long, long time.
Nothing so sublime as the saxophones in this.
Your midnight hour has arrived. RIP.

Word. On the night we heard of his passing we danced and danced to his music, to honor and celebrate his life.

odd trend last: three songs....dead....most of the band is dead...and dead. Ouch.
I hope it didn't take this poor man's death for us to begin to appreciate him as he should be.
