I leapt across three or four beds into your arms
Where I had hidden myself somewhere in your charm
Our golden handshake has been smashed into this shape
It's taken magic to a primitive new place

Watch 'em run
Although it's the minimum
Heroic

We hunched together in one chair out on the deck
In snow that froze and fell down on the modern set
It looked as if I picked your name out of a hat
Next thing you know, you are asleep in someone's lap

Watch 'em run
Although it's the minimum
Heroic

We quit the room
Quit so our thoughts could rest
Rest them, I'll never move
That's when we grab ahold
Of whatever it is we fell into

Lousy with your kept time
With what the majestic cannot find
In the business of your lives
The perception, it is wrong
Mile after mile
The phantom taste drinking wine from your heels

Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la (We have arrived too late to play the bleeding heart show)
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la (We have arrived too late to play the bleeding heart show)
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la (We have arrived too late to play the bleeding heart show)
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la (We have arrived too late to play the bleeding heart show)
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la (We have arrived)
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la (We have arrived)
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la

I really like Ben Howard and this song is no exception. The first section is clearly very similar to PF GBS as others have stated. Hard to tell if thats an homage or just artistic licence either way its not taking anything away from this for me.

Neko Richelle Case (/ˈniːkoʊ ˈkeɪs/;[2] born September 8, 1970)[3] is an American singer-songwriter and member of the Canadian indie rock group the New Pornographers. Case has a powerful, untrained contralto voice, which has been described by contemporaries and critics as a "flamethrower,"[4] "a powerhouse [which] seems like it might level buildings,"[5] "a 120-mph fastball,"[6] and a "vocal tornado".[7]

love this set of descriptions
9 -> 10
I love this song. And I still love this music video that some high school kids put together (gulp!) 16 years ago, using this song. Fan Video

I just want to put my hands up in the air.. and reach for the sky

Maybe because that's pretty much what the lyrics portray? A relationship that popped up seemingly out of nowhere which feels stale and gone astray? I personally could see that being sung as an empty expression of or an imitation of joy. A couple that's screwing on smiles while trying to figure out where to next for the benefit of everyone else, maybe? At least that's always how the song's came across to me.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Remember David Letterman hosting them

New Pornographers songs do seem to rely a lot on word salad.  I'm not a big fan of that style as I'm not convinced there's worksmanship and craft in just stringing together phrases without a theme, but regardless this is a good tune.

Yep. There's a big difference between beautiful poetic abstract lyrics, and overwrought, self-consciously quirky lyrics that sound like they were made with a random word generator. This song is definitely the latter.
sorry neighbours.
Just got tix to see them perform this entire album (and more!) in December!

Great music, fine production, terrible lyrics.  Can't go above 7 I'm afraid.
Love all the hey-la's at the end!
Solid 8.  But Kurt Dahle's drum outro brings it up to a 9.

It's my new reality - working from home, chair dancing and cranking RP.  The office is such a let down these days.

CRANK IT!!!!!
We need to hear the other New Pornographers songs. Play Money and Bones of an Idol have dwindled to 2 plays in 30 days, and Crash Years has had 0.
I love hearing The New Pornographers... I was introduced by my friend Shifra, I was so enamered with her.  She was so light, heavy, sexy and funny.  Just a delightful woman and friend to all who befriended her.

Neko is absolutely magical, and for sure, the drumming alone here is to die and go to rock and roll Heaven for! Thanks, RP now & always!
Good Tune! I never heard of them before. Thanx RP!

it is their traditional concert closer.
The drummers  absolutely mental on his incessant perfect  fills & rolls !!
Moving this up a notch.
Love this song - one of the all-time best indie duets.
Every time this comes on, I come over to update my rating to 10, only to find--again--that it's already 10.

God bless AC Newman and Neko Case.
This is my local band.  As fellow Vancouverites, I love these guys. Especially Neko Case.

What was that inane commercial? Do you remember? (They only used the "Ooo....Oo...Ooo" end part too..)

I remember!  It was for University of Phoenix and 14 years later it is still my favorite song.
I love it when the Hey La's kick in!

They write their lyrics the same way I play consequences.

I missed the 'Ging Gang Gooly' at the start though!
yup.
Also, Neko Case's voice is just fantastic.

That's a good idea, a repeat button on RP :-)
What dya think, Bill?
My favourite song of theirs.
Do you think bands ever finish writing a song, sit there and say, "Damn, that's perfect!"  They sure could have done that with this one.

Never seen them live but right now I'm imagining being near the front and feeling the thump of the drums as well as hearing everything - it'd be fantastic!
My favourite New Pornographers song!  And they are in my home town at the moment.

Just saw them at Haw River. What a show, what a band!

Neko has sung on every album by The New Pornographers to date; Dan Bejar was absent from Whiteout Conditions, however.

We don't know yet whether either will appear on In the Morse Code of Brake Lights, due out later this month.

It should be noted, however, that both Neko and Dan have been touring less and less with the band; Kathryn has been picking up Neko's vocal parts in live performance.  It wouldn't be unusual to suspect that eventually there will be an album without Neko.

Thanks - it seemed that the OP was misinformed about Neko's presence on The New Pornographers' albums to date.

Interesting information about their touring lineup - wasn't aware of that.
Hey La Hey La Hey Now Hey Now I love this song
This was the song that turned me on to Neko! And I first heard it here, thanks RP!

That ending of this song is freaking GLORIOUS! I've seen the band live up close, and yes, that drummer is off the charts.

Strange: does it remind anyone else of the ending of Chicago's "Feeling Stronger Every Day"?

Agree, the song is high quality, but that ending part is just over the top amazing.  And yea, I do hear a bit of "Feeling Stronger Everyday" in there.  Not ripping them off,but the same type of transition and ending.

Hey-La
It's taken years to solidify its position but this might be the tennest ten of all my tens.
I just now realized, after hearing this song maybe 100 times on RP, that that is Neko Case singing.  I don't know why this didn't click with me before.  Love Neko, don't like this song that much.
Let's Do The Time Warp Again.

I said it before, but incorrectly, when I swapped Again for Dance.

That drummer is a maniac.  Channeling Keith Moon.

Exuberant to my ears

Not enough "hey lah"s in modern music IMHO

You mean the annoyingly repetitious part?

A song that captures some essence of 60s-00s and sounds great today.

Way to test a brand new 25 years old set of speakers.

Thanks RP and thank you Y. for the free huge stereo system!
{#Bananajam} Excellent
2 awesome songs in a row!  Why would I ever listen to any other station?

The new album, Brill Bruisers is fantabulous.

Can't get enough of the song "Backstairs".
Kurt Dahl is the groove meister on the drums.
       {#Daisy}  ..... a good sound
Some of the best music to come out of my town.
Favorite song from the band.  Saw them live and was disappointed.  Have become a bigger fan of Neco's solo work.

Yay - always loved the production in this one  {#Cheers}
Bill played this one day while I was riding my bike to work, and I was cranking down a long hill during the outro.

It was a beautiful day and the perfect music for the moment, so I flash back to it every time I hear the song!

Thanks RP...
