When there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son, one more son
If you can hold on
If you can hold on, hold on

I wanna stand up, I wanna let go
You know you know, no you don't you don't
I wanna shine on, in the hearts of man
I want a meaning from the back of my broken hand

Another head aches, another heart breaks
I'm so much older, than I can take
And my affection, well it comes and goes
I need direction to perfection, no no no no

Help me out
Yeah, you know you gotta help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the back burner
You know you gotta help me out, yeah

And when there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
These changes, ain't changin' me
The cold-hearted boy I used to be

Yeah, you know you gotta help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the back burner
You know you gotta help me out
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down

(''I got soul, but'') I got soul, but I'm not a soldier (''I'm not a soldier'')
I got soul, but (''I got soul, but'') I'm not a soldier (''I'm not a soldier'')
I got soul, but (''I got soul, but'') I'm not a soldier (''I'm not a soldier'')
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
(''Time, Truth, and Hearts'')

Yeah, you know you gotta help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the back burner
You know you gotta help me out
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the back burner
You're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down

Over and in, last call for sin
While everyone's lost, the battle is won
With all these things that I've done

All these things that I've done
(''Time, Truth, and Hearts'')

If you can hold on
If you can hold on

It's a 10 because the whole family start singing in whatever distant room they happen to be and that's what life's for.

I like this song a lot more since I watched the movie "Southland Tales", where Justin Timberlake (!) lip-synced this while a bevy of beautiful female dancers, all dressed alike (I think in nurse uniforms), danced around him. Can't get the visuals out of my head when I hear this song now.

My unpopular opinion is that Southland Tales is a fantastic movie.  The whole storyline is original, surreal and wonderfully confusing, it has a great soundtrack--not just this song, which is kind of the film's centerpiece, but also Pixies, Rebekah Del Rio, and BRMC--and the cast, can we talk about the cast?  Not just Timberlake, but Dwayne Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Amy Poehler, Nora Dunn, Cheri Oteri, Will Sasso, Jon Lovitz, John Laroquette, Wallace Shawn (Inconceivable!), Stifler, Booger, the medium lady from Poltergeist, Kevin Smith, Janeane Garolfolo (in a deleted scene).
As Bill Bailey put it: "I've got ham but I'm not a hamster"

Sounds like they ripped off the Beatles Two of Us in parts...

For a song that's supposed to be an anthem, it feels strangely somnambulant, especially the chorus - "gonna bring yourself done, yeeaahhh" just sounds lacking in energy for a song that's supposed to have some uplift. I want to like these guys but I feel like they fail to really bring it.
lame on a number of fronts...and on the back-buuurrrneer. {#Rolleyes}
...i've got leprosy but i'm not a leprechaun...
love this song! best part was how it was used in Southland... lol!
This was the Killers best song, and I don't see anything close after this from them.
What's he got?

What's he not?

The only thing that the Killers (lol), could be doing following Porcupine Tree is on their knees in awe and reverence........Hoping for a crumb.

Here's a couple more ideas...

I care but I'm not going to be up in arms over it. Or maybe fighting isn't always the answer. Take your pick.

I don't assign demerits for ambiguity in my music.

A tad long and repetitive, but...

FUN!
Normally don't like the Killers much, but I dig this song and esp. the souljah refrain.

Yep... that's why I dinged it. Otherwise.....

Help me out, you know you gotta help me out... yeah eah eah eah....

Love it!

But I wonder, is there room for one more sun?
I think, yes, yes there is....

Does it just sound retro or is it really old?
I like the song, except for the really annoying repetitve refrain   —  soul and soldier thing.

This song and I get along quite well......not sure what it is about it but I have upped my vote to a solid 10.  It has staying power and will be around for years to come, at least in my playlist.  The lyrics are powerful, the singing even more so and it touches me like most songs rarely do.

Wow, "The Nike's Guys"
Not many "anthem" songs out there these days - and - I still like this one.

a friend of my suggested it means one has heart but is unable to fight for what they love, thus suggesting wanting and weakness. whether that interpretation applies to this song i dont know for certain.

One of our local radio personalities uses this song as bumper music. I've always liked the song and really appreciate that I can hear it from beginning to end on RP! Thanks
I really don't feel that it's necessary to play this song. Ever.
Something about this song just MOVES me emotionally, I can't put a finger on it but its one of those I love every time I hear it.

Thank you for the thoughtful and well-researched reply.
Fun set this morning Bill! Thanks for the upbeat stuff.

I dunno. At first parse, it certainly seems that way, but stroll on over to the songmeanings.net link and see what the peanut gallery has to say. Normally, I scoff at the folks who see religious meanings in pop songs, but I think they're right on the mark with this one. the "got soul but not a soldier" line makes me think of the old Sunday school song.
I'm in the Lord's army. I'm in the Lord's army. I may never march in the infantry, Ride in the cavalry, Shoot the artilery. I may never fly o'er the enemy, but I'm in the Lord's army.
Anyway, it's not deep. It's not even very meaningful, but "utterly devoid of meaning" goes too far.
i really enjoy brandon flowers' voice. music's good, too.
Saw this band on Austin City Limits; one of the few times I turned the channel; not my flavor.
My 17 year old daughter likes this song and so do I. Who's a square now?
Another very cool, if not quirky, band that I like.

Do you mean "Two of Us" by the Beatles, off Let It Be, or another song that says that...? I am a little reminded of that New Order track "we're singing for england..." that's at the end of the best of new order. And the lead Killer does like New Order, among others.

Maybe it's "I got sole, but I'm not a soldier." Not that that makes more sense. Seriously, I don't get this band. It might be because the local radio station that plays them the most is a bunch of pompous dipshits who bug the f*$k out of me, and every band they tout as essential automatically gets demoted in my mind. But it might also be because I just don't think this band is all that new or different. They have a somewhat distinctive style but that doesn't make them innovative or clever. Not that I demand innovation from all of my music. But I just don't get this band!
I bought the cd after hearing this song on the radio and love the whole album.

Glad I won't have to experience that dreadful moment in rock history. I guess if you can get enough people to chant the same thing, you can convince yourself that this boring banal line actually could qualify as some kind of rock anthem moment in a live show.
Sure, he's got soul. It's called a backing vocal chorus of session singers. And, no. "Burner" is not a four syllable word.
i've liked them since their first single of this cd was out. great cd. dig it a lot.

Sams Town is excellent.
A coworker went to see them last week and she said that their playlist was so weak, they did the same song 3 times!

Great opinion! Thank you. Some people sure are quicker to criticize than to perform.
Their new album "Sam's Town" is out doggies. It is quite excellent. I haven't decided if it's as good, or better than Hot Fuss, but I've only listened to it once or twice yet. I think it will grow on me. js5280 wrote:

I know it grates occasionally as sophomoric, but if I can recall early U2 or mid-career Bowie or indeed certain efforts by any one of us along the path of a life-line, and allow for it, I have to admire their new, vibrant, up-front vocals and intensity, and there seems no denying that they could go far, based on the hard-rocking portents laid down on this album. And my, it sounds so damn good at high volume!
I agree, I think they have a lot of potential as a mainstream band. Mainstream isn't always bad, except if it played ad nauseum which is almost guarenteed on the radio. That is why I find my music elsewhere, like here. The Killers still stay on my MP3 disc rotation here lately. I remember back in the 80s when I HATED U2 because they were overplayed. Great band, but only in moderation. Same can be said with any band as witnessed by some who complain that RP rotates a few songs too much. We'll see if the Killers follow up with a good second album or if it is just another flash in the pan.

The whole album is one of the best of the new wave of bands that are currently around - Others include - Jet- Kasabian - BRMC - Bedroom Heroes - Doveman -ZUTONS (best of the bunch)..........

Exactly! I hate to contribute to the negativity on here, but that line is just trite and meaningless. I really have never understood the appeal of this band. Oh well. To each his own.

This song makes me dance around my cube. And...I don't happen to be a teeny-bopper nor someone who listens to only mainstream radio. I'm a bit taken back by all the negativity for this song. I'm a firm believe of "To each their own" but geez, people.

Just upgraded from 6 to 7. Grows on you I guess.

Not sure if it was the beginning of this song or the end of Dark Matter (Porcupine Tree), but those tones (sonar like) made me think this was going to be Bauhaus. Oh well. This ain't bad though...

though a little silly, I still find myself cranking up the volume..hmm, what's a song to do anyway? 'you put me on the backburner'

I find this whole album to actually be pretty good.
Does anybody remember which GI Joe episode used this for its theme song? barfo
I would rate this perhaps an 7, maybe as high as 8.5, but that damm chorus "I got soul but I'm not a soldier...' repeated 437 times? That drops it to a 3-4. Good tune, good vocals, but uneven lyrics. This song deserves and IED. Lets raise the bar a little higher than trying to be profound to 11 year old boys.

While the "I got soul, but I'm not a soldier" lyric makes me cringe, musically it's quite enjoyable. Certainly better than the first single "Somebody Told Me" which turned me off to The Killers until this song...
I've got a butt, but I'm not a buttler. Come on, this is cr*p.
This sounds very good!
sin duda una sorpresa, sí que han asesinado algunos grupillos que por ahí gritaban
Ah yes, a catchy beat with a jumble of words thrown together that are utterly devoid of meaning and depth. Nothing but an empty, soulless and pointless waste of fucking airtime. If this is indicative of the quality of the rest of that album, I'm very glad I did not give in to impulse and pick it up.
If I was a soldier, and had some soul, I would shot this soul less dribble off the playlist
It was fun to watch them on the Tonight Show last night.
