Summer comes and rain falls away
But the very next day it seems
The snow comes to stay

And you too will go just like the dog days do
I'll put on my hat, my gloves, my scarf
To keep the cold apart

But there are no hats, gloves, scarves for the heart
Just a cold wind that leaves its frosted mark

Don't forget that I will always love you
Just a reminder to help you pave your pathway
Fall it cools, winter it snows,
Spring it rains, summer comes and you go

And in my silly mind I've gotten married to you
You're across town, don't even have a clue
Or these images that in ten years
I'll run into you and fall right back inside of you

Don't forget that I will always love you
Just a reminder to help you pave your pathway
Fall it cools, winter it snows
Spring it rains, summer comes and you go

Don't forget that I will always love you
Just a reminder to help you pave your pathway
Fall it cools and winter snows
Spring it rains, summer comes and you go

So when will we meet next and where will it be?
On a platform track in an old movie
Cause time moves in circles and can leave you anywhere

Fall it cools and in the winter it snows
Spring it rains, summer comes and you go

Outstanding, to my ears.  9 today.  Thanks RP.
All I need to hear is three notes and I slump in my chair.

Nothing like airing your family laundry in public.

Good point...and I happened upon a performance on Netflix by her father, Loudon Wainwright III, which really expresses the family issues you mention in your comment.  This LA Times Review does a good job of explaining the show....https://www.latimes.com/entert...

If you're a fan of any of the generations of Wainwrights, the Netflix performance might be for you....Long Live RP!!
Same here. Also, her live rendition of Cohen's The Traitor is superb (from "Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man" film, 2005).

can this be the same gal who gave us Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole?

For me that's the best song on the album. But perhaps too explicit to play on the radio. On the other hand, we all know at least one BMFA, don't we?
Always reminds me of her superb live rendition of Cohen"s  "Traitor".
very nice Lil Martha

Very, very nice.  Puts a smile on my face.
As good or better than Cohen & Co., in my opinion... I'm surprised how good it is, on multiple listens:  her lyrics, her voice, her magic...

Beautiful voice....haunting in a Tori Amos sort of way...

Is she part of the Wainwright musical clan?  I hear a similarity to the McGarrigles, so maybe one of Lowden's daughters?

Somewhat less strident than her "BMFA"  EP, I'd say.

It's OK, but just this once.
This is such a solid album.  I always listen from beginning to end and enjoy the whole time.

I wish I could write one great song...this is good. It's genuine!
She must have been 15 when she wrote this timeless ballad, so iconic, so wistful and wise.  oh Martha, you old soul.  <3
I remember hearing she and Rufus performing it when he first started touring, with Martha as 'backup' and opening act on rare occasions.
what a lovely song         {#Yes}
Still love her.
what a gem, just beautiful. thanks bill.
I went to see her a couple of weeks ago at a small venue in Vancouver, she put on a really great show.

Are you saying you don't like Rufus?
Maybe you should tell us what you really think rather than holding it all back.
Seriously though Fred, I think this is the first comment I've seen from you in which you swore.
Wow, WAY better than the average Wainwright song!

Might be my favorite CD from the last few years.

Once you lock in on her unique vocal stylings, you become hooked.

Each song grows and grows on you.

Gotta up the rating on this song- I like it better each time I hear it.
Love it, earthy, straightforward  beautiful.
I really like Martha ... everything she sings sounds so genuine
Jeez, nearly had me in tears! Easy Bill, trying to get some work done this side of the pond!

Remarkable voice, great song, works for me

This comment clinches it. Nothing constructive or positive to say. Why bother?
love this one. solid songwriting and lovely vocals.

Huge fan of her dad. And now her too. Did Loudon write this one? If not, Martha's songwriting sounds a lot like her dad's, which is a very good thing by me.

Funny Bill would play David Gray right after Martha. His voice is amazingly similar to Loudon's. No coincidence I'm sure, as Bill is the master of the segue.

Would you say the same about Loudon?

This song makes me stop reading my book and listen to the end. Kept it in my car for weeks. Damn it. I want it back in now. Something must be bumped.

Can't understand why this song has an "Explicit" rating on iTunes - am I missing something in the lyrics?
It might be for the whole album. Ball & Chain has the F-word and some sexually explicit lyrics. Not to mention the last song Bloody M.F'ing A--hole.
Magical
a work of art! :meditate: sublime!
Not interesting at all...
CHILLS on a hot summer morning. Sad & lovely

This one keeps getting better. I expect her to "burst" upon the scene soon. Too good not to garner attention.

So many people seem to really like her that it looks like I am missing something. I love her Mom and her Dads OK-maybe I am expecting to much. I'm going to have to hear more before I venture an opinion because my intial one is so skewed from the norm.
One of my favorite (and only) college concerts was seeing Martha and Rufus together in concert at the Blue Note in our town. Amazing, amazing voices, especially together. Apparently this was before Rufus quit his drug habits, but he was still pretty good. I prefer Martha by far, though.
Yes! Perfect lyrics, perfect song for Solstice, today! :sunny:

Ditto.
Kindly play something by her mother and her aunt, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, such as Love Over and Over. Another good one is Matapedia, in which they sing about Martha meeting an ex-lover of Martha's mom and believing for a moment that it was the mother--30 years later.
Wow!! Touched my heart.
