Far away
In some lovely way I hear your call
Whatever happened to them all?
Whatever happened to us all?

I know that we've never met before
But that was then, and now I need you more
Is someone here keeping the score?
Is there only dying at your door?
Taking me down off this cross
Lay me down, down, down in the dust
Whoa, love, take my hand across the crowd
I have been digging underground
What'er remains is yet to be found
I have no children
I have no husband
I have no reason
To be alive
Oh, give me one

Green grass blades are all on fire
I own the crack that's in the wind
From your window I see bars & the birds
They sing & they sing & they sing & they sing
And the dogs
They bark & they bark & they bark & they bark & they bark

Ah...

Whatever happened to them all?
Whatever happened to us all?

Annie had two young baby boys
And Jimi went crazy, crazy, crazy late last fall
Ah...

There are better tracks on this album.
Like it. Her's is a 100,000 times better sounding than her brother's voice.

Billie Holliday? Little girl voice? I don't think so.

"whatever happened to..." women with rich voices? I really can't stand this "little girl" vocal style employed by so many female artists these days. Gimme smoky old Joni Mitchell ANY day over this fluff.
Ditto. Double Ditto! Singing like you'd expect someone with the nick "BabyGurl-4-U" to sing. In fairness, Martha's only on the edge of this. She has enough talent to sing without some of her current gimmicks.
Riiiight...'cause Joni's voice in "Big Yellow Taxi" is oh so 'smoky.' Gimme a break...I mean, I get your point, but are we going to move on next to critiquing the number of falsetto male voices on recent albums? I find it odd that this "little girl" voice complaint repeatedly comes from women...are you THAT afraid a few women singing in a whispy (read: sexy) voice are going to derail your equality? I'd stop worrying. What seems to be forgotten here is the factor of age. Joni was 27 when she recorded "Big Yellow Taxi", Martha's 29. The archetype of the "little girl" voice, Billie Holliday, was in her 20's when her greatest hits came. I think Martha stands on her own just fine, thank you very much. No doubt her voice will change with time, and I look forward to it. For now, I'll enjoy what we have. Quite likeable, in my opinion.
I LOVE that kind of voice - Kate Bush, The Sundays, The Bangles (Suzanna Hoffs), etc. I think it is a "guy" thing! =P~ diane wrote:

seriously...meh... >>NEEEEXXXTTT<<
Boring, heard it before shrillness - still another progeny cashing in on a family name.

Nice voice, but the song does nothing for me. Let's hear another track or two and see where that takes us.
:nodhead: the lyrics are crap

Such an expressive voice. Will we hear more from this album, or will the RP boycott of all persons Wainwright continue?
Shouldn't be a problem. She apparently didn't get the caterwauling gene. Not a bad voice just slightly innocuous.

I second that... :-k
I like it. Sort of a Jane Siberry vibe, but different.

Here in Chicago we LOVE all the Wainwrights. Thanks Loads RP :heartkiss:
From Rhapsody: "Martha Wainwright is the daughter of singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright III and folk singer Kate McGarrigle..In 2002 at the age 25...Martha released her first EP Factory having honed her vocal technique as a backup singer with brother Rufus. In February 2005, she released a second EP closely followed by her impressive full-length debut Martha Wainwright...
I guess we'll continue to hear her! Thanks, RP.
