That Cuban girl
That brought me low
She had that skin so fine and red lips
Roselike now
Her mouth was wide
And sweet as well
And now relentless hours of
Dreaming up her smell, and

I feel
as if I'm looking at the world from the bottom of a well
I feel
as if I'm looking at the world from the bottom of a well

Lonely
And the only way to beat it is to bat it down
And the only way to beat it is to bat it down
And the only way to beat it is to bat it down
beat it.
Lonely
And the only way to beat it is to bat it down
And the only way to beat it is to bat it down
And the only way to beat it is to bat it down
beat it.

Oh all the days
That I have run
I sought to lose that cloud that's blacking out the sun
My train will come
Some one day soon
And when it comes I'll ride it bound from night to noon.

I feel
as if I'm looking at the world from the bottom of a well
I feel
as if I'm looking at the world from the bottom of a well

Aimless days,
Uncool ways
Of decathecting
Painless phase,
Blacked out thoughts
You be rejecting.

Lonely
And the only way to beat it is to bat it down
And the only way to beat it is to bat it down
And the only way to beat it is to bat it down
beat it.
Lonely
And the only way to beat it is to bat it down
And the only way to beat it is to bat it down
And the only way to beat it is to

We'll let's get down to business now
I feel
as if I'm looking at the world from the bottom of a well
I feel
as if I'm looking at the world from the bottom of a well
I feel
as if I'm looking at the world from the bottom of a well

Unmarrrrrrked helllicoppptterrrz!
If I only knew the only way to beat this loneliness.   Just having fun...I like this song.
autotuned voice :(
love me some MD and/or soul coughing.

thank goodness for the My Favorites mix.
Verse reminds me of Running Down a Dream
This is Mike back in fine form. The first Soul Coughing album was brilliant, the second pretty good. After many years I recently popped the last one (El Oso) into my car's CD player, and after a good start, it gradually descended into self--indulgent boredom. This is the Soul Coughing album that should have been, but never was.
I love this tune on a Friday morning in Berlin - looking at the world from the bottom of my well…
You know, I have a nice live version of this song and along with 27 Jennifer's and I really like them.
I couldn't quite get some of the negative comments. After hearing this studio version I can sympathize!
Does anyone here rate songs with the hope you actually change the average rating number, giving you a false sense of power and security? Anyone? Just me? Ok.
I love this song btw.
...never heard him before here in Austria, I like this song

absolutely! (and this is another reason that I love the song... and the album)

PLEASE play more tracks from this album on RP

 such an annoying voice...
His soul was coughing. That is  why he was in a dark place.

His just-released memoir, "The Book of Drugs," pulls the curtain back on this enigmatic songwriting gem and reveals a Doughty many people may not recognize. It's an often uncomfortable though delightful read, in the sense of what you might expect from one’s detailing their own heavy drug use. Doughty is open about everything: his upbringing, his family, and his stinging accounts of his past and present hatred for Soul Coughing. “If somebody says they love Soul Coughing, I hear fuck you,” he writes.

I kind of wish I hadn't read the lyrics.  They start out interesting but then go deep on the redundancy.
Bad.

Everybody in my mushrooming multitude of churches be dancing buck ass naked all across the holy moly world like bowlegged gypsy muleskinners and B.F. Skinner...  we love this splendiferous song...  love sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll...
Love this one...Wow Bill 2 MD tunes in one day - nice!
As far as RP music goes...this is a happy upbeat tune..I like

Loved Soul Coughing. Loved Mike Doughty's early, less production-heavy albums. Have seen him about 5 times in Seattle since the early 2000s. I'm done with that. He was such a jerk to one of the audience members at the last show i saw him that i can hardly enjoy his music anymore. Sad, 'cause he lost a true fan.

Good Lord that's an irritating chorus.
Also, do those guitar licks sound like Girlfriend-era Matthew Sweet to anyone else?

This song has never "hit the spot".
The song grows on me: 7 ....... 8.

Yes. Yes. Yes. For so many reasons.
This is shite. It sounds like everything that was played on Top 40 radio back in the mid 90's. Spare us.

uhm.... maybe like Soul Coughing?
Fun music. I just have this feeling that I've heard this or something like this before, I just can't place it.

Great show Monday @ the Variety Playhouse here in ATL. Mike and his band were on point. This song is even better live.

RP turned me on to this CD and it's definitely now one of my favorites from the last few years. He has a bunch of other little odds-and-ends CDs as well. Hit and miss, but the hits are worth it. I would recommend Rockity Roll after this CD.

Exactly!! I joined RP only 2 days ago... and have problems to concentrate on my work from this day onwards...

sounds like the singer in Cake to me

How about playing "27 Jennifers"? A wonderful song. Being a Jennifer I understand the sentiment.

I have to tell you that this comment of yours has clouded my listening of this song. Forever and ever, Amen. Not that it's a great song, but every time I hear it, I think of your comment. So, uh, thanks. Not.
Nice. I always liked SC's Irresistible Bliss album. Never followed up on what the band or band members did though...
I flew out to Denver last week and this cd was reviewed in the in-flight magazine for Frontier airlines. I took pride in knowing it already from being hooked up at RP.

Yeah, the lyrics are repetitive, but the tune cooks right along nicely.
If you arent into repeated phrases repeated phrases repeated phrases, this guy isn't for you. I like this album a lot. I can especially appreciate "tremendous brunettes" For trivia's sake the album name is an anagram (play on the letters of doughty's name.) Get your own at (click here)
Solid pop music with lyrics that exude durability. Dig it. Groovy. Word.
Nah, dont think so.

great lyricist, witty and clever....for over a decade now
I ripped this from a friend of mine a few months ago and although never a fan of soul coughing, this is really good, jamming music, if not a bit repetitive. I put this on my mp3, went to the skating rink with my closed cell headphones (to block out their horrendous music) and totally jammed out. Awesome album for any speed sports. This music, the huge crowds of people on the rink made the experience close to driving fast in traffic or trying to commute on foot in crowded, narrow European streets. Find the open lane, downshift and take on any comers. Highly recommend this album.
hrrrmmmmmmmm decathecting ....what a great word. gonna try to do that.
This is pretty good...interested in hearing more

A friend of mine just introduced me to Doughty's solo stuff a few months ago. This is a great track and a great album, but I think a lot of the stuff on Rockity Roll and Skittish is much cooler, too bad those albums don't get more rotations around here.

Just surprising to me, since I like the soundtrack, but do not like the show. Too faux-zeitgeisty for me - maybe I'm just not in the correct demo? I'll take Scrubs, instead. jakeinprogress wrote:

This song - which I LOVE - is also on the surprisingly good Grey's Anatomy Soundtrack ("Original Soundtrack" = Season 1?). Pretty good collection of singles for $9.99 IMHO: Such Great Heights – Postal Service Ruby Blue – Roisin Murphy Song Beneath the Song – Maria Taylor Where Does the Good Go – Tegan and Sara Looking At the World from the Bottom of a Well – Mike Doughty Wait – Get Set Go Could be Anything – The Eames Era LOVE IT >> Portions for Foxes – Rilo Kiley The City – Joe Purdy REAL GOOD > End of the World Party – Medesky, Martin & Wood Catch My Disease (Live) – Ben Lee LOVE IT >> There's a Girl – The Ditty Bops Whatever Gets you Through Today –The Radio Fools in Love – Inara George REAL GOOD > Cosy in the Rocket - Psapp
This sounds exactly like a local Vancouver band called 'Brickhouse".

This entire disc is sooooo good!!! One of favs from last year. Thanks Bill!!!
Love this much ... early soul-coughing was just sublime. and the switch into the John Hiatt tune is pretty cool too. and here's the word on decathecting - kinda interesting (thnx hcaudill - below): "What does "decathecting" mean? We get a lot of emails here at Mike Doughty HQ asking what the word "decathecting," from the bridge section of "Looking at the World from the Bottom of a Well," means. Our good friends at Dictionary.com define the verb "cathect" as meaning "To invest emotional energy in (a person, object or idea)." So "decathecting" would then be the divestment, or letting go, of said emotional energy. Geekin' out—FOR THE FANS!"

can't stand this guy - his voice is okay, but he over-pronunciates (sp?) everything and it really grates on my nerves. too repetitive as well.
"...and the only way to beat it is to bat it down...and the only way to beat it..." That, and serotonin re-uptake inhibitors. Good tune!

Thank you, RP! I've heard this song on local radio stations and loved it, but they'd never say who this was or the name of the song. I hate that - is it really too much to do for the listeners? Now I can add this to the collection.
Isn't this Bruce Hornsby?
Yep like this - never heard of of Mr D before - but this rocks!
A lot - most actually - of the songs on RP grow on me. But not this one. It shrinks on me. That refrain is grating!
Mari wrote:
Biography by Lee Meyer Before emerging as a solo artist, M. Doughty (first name: Michael) was best-known as the frontman of the unique avant-garde group known as Soul Coughing. Spawned in 1992, Soul Coughing was formed after Doughty met his bandmates (Yuval Gabay, Sebastian Steinberg, and Mark de Gli Antoni) while working as a doorman at the Knitting Factory, a staple of New York City's hip underground music scene. Soul Coughing signed to Slash/Warner in 1993 after making a name for themselves on the local scene and attracting the attention of music labels with their fusion of rock, Doughty's beatnik-inspired lyrics, and elements of hip-hop and electronic music. TOO MUCH INFO In July 2002, Doughty released the limited edition live album Smofe + Smang: Live In Minneapolis. It featured a large selection of solo material as well as Soul Coughing classics. A book of poetry entitled "Slanky," which was initially self-released in 1995, also coincided with the live album. In 2003, more solo work surfaced in the form of the Rockity Roll EP, which was then combined with the Skittish album and rereleased with a handful of bonus tracks when Doughty signed to Ato records in 2004. In 2005, Doughty released his first solo effort to feature a band, Haughty Melodic, which contained fleshed-out studio versions of several songs debuted on Smofe + Smang.
Lovely, just lovely...
Love this guy's voice for some reason. I had heard his solo stuff, but never anything from Soul Coughing...so when a SC song played earlier today I kept thinking "Where have I heard that voice before?" Now it's all coming back to me.
