Having been accustomed to the original version, I find the overdubbed guitar part really annoying. It seems to me incorrect to put mostly irrelevant fills, played in a smooth professional style, over the top of Cornwall's jaggedy naive style. For what purpose? Just to showcase the new dude? Give me the good old Stranglers any day.

Sunny Side Up Mix

Following HughCornwell's departure from the band in August 1990, Epic Records decided to release a greatest hits compilation album. To promote this compilation, a remix of "Always the Sun" was released as a single on 24 December 1990, Christmas Eve.  The remix consisted of extra guitar work from new guitarist John Ellis and a slight variation in the music, although Hugh Cornwell's original vocals were still used.

Like the original, the single got good airplay, but this time peaked at #29, one place higher than the original.  Cornwell stated in his book Song By Song that he was not angered by the remix, asserting that he was privileged that Epic Records thought "Always the Sun" was good enough to be re released, and feeling that the band changed little of the original recordings.

I pretty sure that the album was re-issued in 2001 and at that time it was remastered.  I'm guessing that this is the remastered version.

This is much more pop than punk. The Stranglers did do punk songs though, but that was before they did poppy songs like this. None of those punk songs are in the RP-playlist. They were quite good as punk as well as a pop band actually.

Kind of "pop punk". Don't fret over the repetitive verse - pop is like that, so when you have a catchy tune, maximise it. This particular mix isn't what I'm used to hearing on commercial radio, and it does overdo the repetition somewhat.

I know this song is simple and many Stranglers fans probably hate it because it represents such a divergence from their earlier material (which I also like), but this song always makes me smile. Always loved it, always will. That's a 9, folks!

Haven't heard this in, gee, decades. Very '80s in a St. Elmo's Fire kind of way. But better. Lots of audio tricks. A bit repetitive but cool hooks. A lousy name for the band that no doubt did not roll off tongues.  The Strangers? The Stringers? The Spanglers?
