From the very first day that you were born
To the very last time you waved and honked your horn
I had no chance at all to watch you grow
Up so sadly, beautiful
Up so sadly, beautiful

Baby needs a brand new pair of eyes
'Cause the ones you got now see only goodbyes
Had no chance at all to let you know
Oh so sadly, beautiful
Sadly, beautiful

Well you got your father's hair
And you got your father's nose
But you got my soul
Sadly, beautiful

From the very last time you waved and honked your horn
To a face that turned away pale and worn
Had no chance at all to let you know
You left me sadly, beautiful
Left me sadly, beautiful

Sadly, beautiful
So sadly
So sadly

"on the very first day that you were born"? What, were there other days on which you were born? Or is the lyricist just trying to pad out the line? Yep, reckon that's it. Reminds me of the stupid song lyric "it's 4am in the morning" (can't remember what twit wrote that, Sting I think).

Were the song that followed at all interesting I'd be happy to overlook the silly lyric, but it's dull, oh so dull, James Blunt-style dull but even duller than that. Sadly dull, duller than paint drying, than grass growing in winter, than watching the test card {#Sleep}

If All Shook Down was a book of poetry or an instruction manual you’d have a point. But it’s music where lyrics need to live comfortably in the arrangement. I love this song.

Maybe:
From the very first day that you arose
To the very last  time you waved and honked your nose

This album introduced me to the greatness that could be found when you turned off commercial radio.

"It's four AM in the morning." Roseanne Cash, My Baby Thinks He's a Train." Maybe others I suppose.
Thanks for adding vintage Replacements to the mix!  Love our local boys!!!!

Like an old jumper that you find in the attic when changing clothes from summer to fall, and you are glad you found it, just a comfortable smile comes to you.
Had no chance at all to let you know,
It's all over now, baby blue.

Who the hell listens to lyrics??

Yes, they pad out the line...that's what lyrics do, with a few exceptions.  It's all about the total package - music, lyrics, production, feel, tempo, blah blah blah.

Ever write a song, Fred?  Who ever heard of a "hit lyric" anyway?  Sheesh.

There are occasional exceptions of course, but for the most part I agree with you.

Yes, this one is slow but the brilliance of the 'Mats is that they can light a fire under yer ass too.

Well, the song is titled "Sadly Beautiful", one shouldn't expect a polka.

My favorite track off this album.

I always wondered what great musicians the Replacements replaced? These guys really suck. Never did like them. Bring back the Replaced!
wiki:
The band first formed in Southwest Minneapolis as Dogbreath in 1979 as a punk rock group. Bob Stinson, his brother Tommy Stinson, and Chris Mars had been jamming together in the Stinsons' house when they were approached by Paul Westerberg and his guitar, bringing the four together for the first time. Westerberg had been performing in a Rush cover band and heard Dogbreath as he walked home each day. He vowed that he would join the group, but they already had a singer. Westerberg, through series of well-placed lies and manipulations, put the band at odds with their singer and tensions soon forced the singer to depart; Westerberg joined the band soon after. The band then took the name The Impediments for its first show, which was at a halfway house, but they were kicked out for being drunk. The person who booked them vowed to have them blacklisted in Minneapolis-St. Paul, so they quickly changed their name to The Replacements.
Anyone surprised that Mugs don't like the 'Mats?

You sure you sacrificed the right ones?

Sure... about every 3rd show... Paul confessed that they couldn't do a great show every night, and it would most likely be "okay one night, crap the next, but then, mighty."
I once heard Westerberg refer to himself as the 'king of mediocrity" his self effacing manerism and his hard rocking attitude, mixed with slow thoughtful songs like this are part of his charm!

Yes, it was the first time he wrote it. But alas our "Genius" tries out far too many variations of that same line.
10! 10! 10! 10! ...we're not worthy!

This is not the up to the level of Let it Be, Tim, or Pleased to Meet Me--3 of the greatest albums in rock. Still, even mediocre Replacements is better than 95% of everything else. A solid 9

Thanks for commenting, but this album ain't even close to "Hootenanny" (which you quoted oh so well). Try ripping off any lyrics to 'Sadly Beautiful' (or any other cut on "All Shook" off the top of your head)--it ain't easy! I see you left Burnsville since August 7, but stayed in Vikingland. There goes your season pass at Buck Hill...
I usually go to Welch anyways ;) I'm one of those goofballs who enjoyed the transition that Westerberg made. Still buy his albums. It's a love or hate thing, definitely.

Totally disagree. Great album. Not like Hootenanny and doesn't have any songs with lyrics like: "First thing we do when we finally pull up. Get sheeeiiitt faced drunk, try to sober up." But, still good. :)

this really wasn't even a Replacements album. Basically, by this point it was Westerberg & whoever else showed for the session, but the label had to market it as a group album (which tanked, AGAIN!). Really a sorry effort for a swan song from a fine band.

Hey. I have this. And I forgot about it. Sweet.
The kind of song made for overcast days. Aces.
Thanks for the beautiful song. More Replacements/Paul Westerberg please!!!
Not bad, but Jessica Riddle(jacobs) does a better version
i keep hearing about these guys, so i'm glad to get a sampling. i usually need a few listens to judge potentially pretty songs.
