No matter how I try,
I just can't get her out of my mind
And I when I sleep I visualize her.
I saw her in the pub,
I met her later at the nightclub.
A mutual friend introduced us
We talked about the noise
And how its hard to hear your own voice
Above the beat and the sub-bass.
We talked and talked for hours,
We talked in the back of our friend's car
As we all went back to his place.
On our friend's settee,
she told me that she really liked me
And I said: "Cool, the feeling's mutual."
We played old 45s
And said it's like the soundtrack to our lives
And she said: "True, it's not unusual."
Then privately we danced
We couldn't seem to keep our balance
A drunken haze had come upon us.
We sank down to the floor
And we sang a song that I can't sing anymore
And then we kissed and fell unconscious.
I woke up the next day
All alone but for a headache.
I stumbled out to find the bathroom
But all I found was her
Wrapped around another lover.
No longer then is he our mutual friend.

Yup - and you can definitely count me in that bracket - love all his stuff and always go to see him in concert when he tours - went in Liverpool in October and off to see him in London this Thursday :)
This isn't my favourite song of Neil's but it's certainly one of his most accomplished. As was said in other comments how anyone can say this song doesn't work on any level just baffles me! If you have any understanding of music, lyrics or story telling then even if it's not your type of music surely it can at least be appreciated?
It's massively multi-layered - rich orchestra music in the background, an interesting story told in a very clever way, instrumental sections while there are events happening and they are moving from one place to another, the subtle implication of "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" (which he actually sings live - he's a huge fan of the Walker Brothers) and there's even a big twist at the end!
I'm not sure what people want from a singer-songwriter if all of the above isn't enough! (and that's just in ONE song - he has 11 studio albums!)...anyway - rant over. Listen to more folks and hopefully we can get more on RP as well :)

More Divine Comedy please ! Casanova and Liberation are probably his best albums but ALL of his stuff is brilliant !

This song definitely had to "grow on me" when it played on the LRC. Give it a chance and I think you may like it. The Divine Comedy has a unique style.
