Paid up, weathered, and type-O
Clad in gladstone, watch him go
Swimming 'neath the microscope
Hello lonely, bless the nation
Mister skip to all or none
Wooden soldiers fall upon
Try to find what makes her tick
While they're finding out what makes them sick

I don't know where you find your nerve
I don't know how you choose your words
Speak the ones that suit you worst
Keep you grounded, sad, and cursed
Circle the ones that come alive
Save them for the best of Jill Hives

Been around and left you flat
Tragically decided that
Every child of God's a brat
And she's dying to escape them
But do we really need to see
All her punchdrunk history?
And which of it might hold the key
For the exit to her destiny?

I don't know where you get your nerve
I don't know how you choose your words
Speak the ones that suit you worst
Keep you grounded, sad, and cursed
Circle the ones that come alive
Save them for the best of Jill Hives

I don't know where you find your nerve
I don't know how you choose your words
Speak the ones that suit you worst
Keep you grounded, sad, and cursed
Circle the ones that come alive
Save them for the best of Jill Hives

Number one in all our souls
Trifle in a crystal bowl
Fill it up with nine to five
Save them for the best of Jill Hives

I thought reverb was like cowbell...

Add Game of Pricks to your playlist asap
Yay!  GBV!!
Just a hair too much reverb?
We've got a science centre here for the kids. One of the exhibits has a mic with a .5 second delay on it.  It is virtually impossible to speak into it as the brain gets very confused.  This song reminds me of it.
Dreamy!  And great lyrics.
After listening to this song since the beginning of Radio Paradise... I still don't know who Jill Hives is.
Excellent sing along, if you know the words.
Not keen.  Flimsy vocals disguised by too much reverb, I feel.  My ears are not impressed.
Gets a "1" from me for excessive reverb. Driving me batty.

Their artwork tends to consist of collages, which for a band that is often categorized as "lo-fi" might be oddly appropriate. {#Cheesygrin}

I think they may have spent more on the artwork/collage than the musical production, but I still love GBV.

I learned a new word.   Hard to like....
RIP GBV
Love hearing them on RP.

Don't mind the song...but damn...this stupid, inane and sloppy artwork is such a disappointment. Why must artists succumb to the latest trend of having amateur looking artwork to represent their music? They spend a plenty on production of the sound....why must they shortchange the artwork budget and produce pre school looking visuals? The world may never know...the answer must be..."shut up and keep your eyes closed and ears open". Got it.

GBV's Robert Pollard:

You should hear their early stuff. It sound exactly like REM.

I was gonna say, he sounds a lot like Michael Stipe. Not really feeling it though.

Wow, this band was a fixture in my hometown growing up. And now here they are on RP! Woohoo!
Another first for me on RP. I've not heard this song before; I only vaguely recall the band. i like the catchy song, love the CD's song titles. More GBV, por favor.
Still tap my toes every time I hear it!{#Bounce}
Love this band, but not this album.
Yes!!! Glad to hear this tune on RP!! Great GBV song!
First GBV song I heard. Loved them ever since!
The echo is even worse than the singing.
thanks for this one Paradise ... no - thanks for the lot - excellent stuff :)

I thought so too...
Incredible band.  Amazing.  Love Bob Pollard.
I cannot get my mind around this man's talent.

I love this song! {#Dancingbanana_2}
Not sure if the sound here is right - there's a sort of echo that just sounds naff. All other stuff on RP (even Bill!) sounds OK.

pop perfect
Hey!  I like this!  I Tunes here I come!
I remember when this was in rotation quite often a year or two ago, maybe why the lack of comments of late.
Quite likeable!!

The Monkees were better.
nice sound. first time I'm hearing this.
I like this. A little poppy, nice voice, ballady, neat chord changes.

Man, that John Hughes had a huge wang, or was that John Elway?
HAHAHA!!!
I'm replying to myself....sort of...haven't heard this one on RP since the last time I commented >>> I like this song and haven't seen Shirley McClain uploaded yet.... jdorn1 wrote:
A good tune that hasn't been played much lately. A good follow up (segue) song would be Shirley Maclaine by the Jazz Butcher.

Yeah, I used to collect rabid beatles, till one bit me.
Amazing.
I saw GBV about 10 years ago, and the lead singer was slurring and staggering to the point where it was no longer entertaining. Save the partying for AFTER the gig, Bob.

Many may try, but few succeed.
sorry, but i'm going to say not so much....and doubt michael stipe can slam the miller lites quite like bob did... woozurdaddy wrote:
Absolutely it does....bet he covered "Don't Go Down To Rockville" in his first cover band...
The new Zombies? Pretty good tune.

yep + old church song + bleah = 3.

Well, I like alot of GBV, and there's something to be said for lo-fi -- you can be these guys aren't lip-synching.
Agreed, a LOT of spontaneity :) Got most of their/his albums & some solo stuff by Robert Pollard & Tobin Sprout... Some live shows can be found too... gbv.com
Hmm. I never checked the playlist on this one and always thought it was an old R.E.M. song.. ! His voice sounds a lot like Michael Stipe. Or does it? I gave it a 6.

GBV is often typified as a lo-fi band with songs recorded on home/4 track/etc.... hence perhaps the SSSSss....He makes up for quality with quantity... I believe he's also a rabid Beatles collector...

It's Holmes... or so I heard.

Sounds like a lost track from a John Hughes soundtrack. Not a bad thing by any stretch.

sib·i·lance, sib·i·lance , sib·i·lance. Think Tom Hanks as Aerosmith's Roadie...

Man, this song sticks in my head. And I think the SSssss effect is kinda cool, for some reason.
GBV!!! Loved these guys since "I am a Scientist". The live shows rock!!!
I always get faked out by the beginning of this one... sounds like the beginning bass line of U2's "Elevation" to me...

Sounds like there's something wrong with this recording. All the sss sounds resonate in the reverb. Or something.

Can you say Jazz Butcher? Rachel land? I could swear that was the Pat Fish, Max Eider and the boys....What a great sound!!!! I want more!
God Bless GBV!
