As in the redonkulous artistry and skill slamming into you like Mjolnir?  I agree.

Herb Alpert's technique was simply astounding.

OOOH such precious memories
as kids my brothers and i so loved listening to our grandmother's box set -
Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass was a great band and still has many fans according to what I see many of your listeners writing
This reminds me of a tape that my dad used to play in our 12 hours roadtrips (Puerto Vallarta for example...) along with other songs from 60's and 70's movies. Thanks Bill for reminding a lot of us of our childhood
Heaven?
Wow, I'm 11 years old, my parents aren't home and I have this playing on the family Grundig console - at significant volume!  As a junior high trumpet player, I'm also trying to figure out the notes, so I can play it myself - never quite as well as Herb, though.  The Tijuana Brass was big part of my adolescence - Thanks Bill & Rebecca!
My kids LOVE this. Batshit-crazy dancing round the kitchen...
ever since I was a kid and my parents would put this on I would laugh at how ridiculously fast he was. Such a showoff. 😎
Proof that instrumental music can make you laugh out loud.

I wonder what else is on this album?  Like others, I remember this almost note for note, after 50+ years.  Might go look for the movie.
Most excellent!

 LOL!  That's the best memory post so far of this great song!

How multicultural is this?...A Jewish Ukrainian?Romanian musician
performing with a Latino/Mexican band recording a Greek themed soundtrack.

The "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" cover was an invitation to partake of pleasures that are displayed now without pleasure or delight or invitation.

Herb Alpert takes me back to a good place  in this time of coronavirus quarantine.

Now we're talkin'...
Herb Alpert is one of the smartest and wealthiest people in the music business. Worth looking up his history as an executive.

Our band director said Herb Alpert could step up to a trumpet suspended on a wire, hands behind his back, and blow C above the staff. He's one of the best there ever was.

Nothing better than a pregnant woman covered in shaving cream!
I heard this as part of the soundtrack on Cheech and Chong's "Still Smokin'", a VHS tape I wore out when I was a teenager.  My buddy Paul and I had memorized the entire movie, we watched it so many times one summer.  Good times, thanks, Bill
And now I want to cook a Greek Mexican dinner!
Nice, but I wish we also heard the original.

Wow! I don't think I've heard this since I was a kid back in the 60's and 70's. Yet I remember it almost note for note. Cool.

BillG must pull this track out often enough to have 1000+ ratings, yet I don't know if I've heard any of the "old" Herb Alpert records on RP until now.  And I'm stoked!  My dad, among his rather varied LP collection, was a BIG fan of HA&TTBB; of course, I remember it in reverse chronological order, starting with Rise, which came out when we lived in the 805 (Carpentaria in the house!!) and I was about 4-5 years old.

So, maybe I'll get to hear this 9 next time... Long Live RP!!

Yes, I like this version.  Years ago there was a tuba player who tried to perform this as an audition for The Ed Sullivan Show.  He started out pretty well but by the fourth verse he blew his spleen out.
My dad has quoted my grandpa as saying back in the '60s that the Tijuana Brass would outlast the Beatles and nobody would know who the Beatles were in 15 years.  Although I'm glad he was wrong about nobody knowing the Beatles, I wish the Tijuana Brass had better lived up to his expectations.
OMG I used to love to dance to this song when I was a little girl; I'd totally bounce off the walls to it. Love that whole album! {#Dancingbanana}
always loved them two-part harmonizing trumpets..{#Cheers}
This is why RP is the best station on Earth!  I was down...now I'm up.  Love it!  Ya ya ya!!

What kind of tape is that? I used to have quarter inch RTR's that were on five(?) inch reels. Those look smaller. And maybe only ~10 minutes of music.

That is a 7" reel to reel tape that was factory pre recorded at 7.5 ips being played on Ferrograph Super 7 machine that can handle up to 10.5" reels. Its 1/4" tape also. That particular tape plays about 45 mins.

First impression is really bad. Knowing the original, this is, at first, nearly insulting. (I nearly never like covers) But listening further, I must admit, not taking account of the original, I like it. It's fun, ryhtmic, well done.

Greek music on the Mexican way : inconfortable and strange at first sight, but it's worth to pass the first impression.
40+ years later Zorba the Greek is still alive.  Damn!  And so sweet.

"The directors of the firm hired to continue the credits after the other people had been sacked, wish it to be known that they have just been sacked.

The credits have been completed in an entirely different style at great expense and at the last minute."

That's what this calls to my mind, anyway.

I challenge you to do Zorba the Greek next time you're playing charades.
awwwwwwwwww yeeeaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Sorry, but I almost broke my mute button putting my finger through it, once I realized what was making my skin crawl and my stomach turn.  Just can't take the trumpet sound!
Sometime in the early-mid 60's, my grandpa told my dad that in 10 years everyone would be listening to Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass and no one would know who the Beatles were. I kinda think I wish his prediction had come true. This is good stuff.
I love this!  Brings back memories from when I was little and my parents put the album on and played both sides straight through....
Such a classic.
I love this -- me be dancing! {#Bananasplit}
Cornet payer in high school ... and the fast parts in this are damn near impossible to play.

(edit a few minutes later)  And we all know he's the "A" in A&M records, right?  Of course we do.

This song feels like my carefree youth.

I liked the mix, Bill !
Fabulous energy!
This should be followed by Goran Bregovic:

Makes you want to smash plates on the floor LOVE IT!!  {#Hearteyes}

Outstanding!  Thank you for keeping radio surprising!
My cousins used to blast this entire album at our summer home in the Poconos when I was growing up, so this tune has special meaning to me. That's why I rated it higher than average.
Huh?
When I was in grade school, I was laughed out of the room when I offered to bring in my Kinks album ("Kinks" debut with "You Really Got Me") for my class's Holiday Party. The obvious (and otherwise unanimous) choice was everyone else's parent's Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass Album ("South of the Border"). Shame on me.
No one else would play Herb Alpert's "Zorba", very brave, Bill.

I will admit as lad of 10 or so spending more time looking at this particular record in my parent's collection than any of the others.... by a significant margin.

Kind of jarring after Cake.  But I like it, for some unknown reason.

Funny enough, after reading this thread on here this morn, ran across a news article about the model for this cover turning 76 today - neat!

model for cover of Whipped Cream and Other Delights turns 76

  Anyhow, it was a different time, obviously - a lot more adults bought records in those days than kids did.  1966's Grammy for Album of the Year went to Frank Sinatra's A Man & His Music.  The Beatles' "Michelle" won Song Of The Year, and Klaus Voorman won Best Album Cover - Graphic Arts for the Revolver cover.  By 1967, the Academy changed their tune, and Sgt. Pepper's... won Album of the Year.

God I love Bill!!!  I played him over and over and over.  I made an 8 hour reel to reel of all his records on my Dads tape deck.  I'm sure I annoyed people by repeating his skits word for word.

I got to see him live about 6 months ago.  Not like the old times but still funny.

Thanks for that.

Edit..  I am in the process of educating my boy about Bill.  He loves the stories.
