All the snow has turned to water,
Christmas days have come and gone.
Broken toys and faded colours are all that's left to linger on.
I hate graveyards and old pawn shops,
For they always bring me tears.
I can't forgive the way they robbed me of my childhood souvenirs.

Memories, they can't be boughten.
They can't be won at carnivals for free.
Well it took me years to get those souvenirs,
And I don't know how they slipped away from me.

Broken hearts and dirty windows
Make life difficult to see.
That's why last night and this morning
Always look the same to me.
And I hate reading old love letters
For they always bring me tears.
I can't forget the way they robbed me,
Of my sweetheart's souvenirs.

Memories they can't be boughten,
They can't be won at carnivals for free.
Well it took me years to get those souvenirs
And I don't know how they slipped away from me.

I consider it a great sign for a song when the top post in the comments is somebody just copy-pasting the lovely lyrics.
Music from his Heart  : )  Thank you

Ain't the flaming suzette set
Our Bach and Tchaikovsky

But ain't we got love

Heard this on the way home from a hunting trip with my son (the whole anthology is great), and, yes indeed, this guy's what it's all about.
I always loved to play and sing this song when I was a youngster in college. .....now with the perspective of 20 plus years of life and all that entails, and the fact that I haven't heard this tune in probably 10, it is more than just a good sing along. It is beautiful. And big ups to not trying to classify John Prine as a country artist. I've seen him in a small club with just him and his guitar, playing quiet. I've also seen him with a full band rock harder than any of these recent "hard core" bands could hope to. Just count me a a music lover..........
odd I have this tune on a CD somewhere but he sounds totaly different then does on this version
If we would all just STOP trying to label, pigeonhole and categorize songs, and just LISTEN....this is a GREAT "radio station" that plays a lot of AWESOME music.

That's Mister Prine to you 'n me. A 9. What's the name o' that fancy law firm down Saouth? Oh, yeah Lovett Prine Hiatt Cooder & Earle... They'll take care o' ya.
I know Hiatt lives in Tennessee now but he grew up right here in Indianapolis. And Prine spent a large part of this life in Chicago although his family was from Kentucky.

John Prine...an American treasure. Folks gotta get past labeling it country. If it was country, I'd hate it, but it's Americana.
I agree. If it was country, I'd hate it, too. But John is an incredibly gifted writer, and I don't have a need to categorize it.

Great lyricist and storyteller - more please!

I'm feeling a lot more country and less rock n roll right about now. I know this music is supposed to be eclectic but i guess I'm not into ALL genres.

Well the logic is this...How can folk music or easy listening "rock"get more exposure than any other genre?
I don't think this genre gets any more exposure than any other. I think you just don't like it and therefore it stands out to you. Too bad for you.

How about some Steve Goodman? Bill?

I'm a fairly new regular listener of RP, but I do not think it focuses on folk music. What one considers to be easy listening rock is fairly subjective, so I can see where someone possibly might think most of the rock falls into that category, although I would disagree. Nonetheless, I've heard folk, rock, reggae, blues, jazz, fusion, and classical. That makes it fairly eclectic in my estimation.

Hmmm . . . playing John Prine makes this not eclectic radio? Don't follow the logic.

Gotta like John Prine! He truly puts voice to the common man . . . with uncommon talent. I also would second the request for Steve Goodman.
Thanks. More Prine or Steve Goodman would always be welcome.

This anthology is simply amazing. Next time you're taking a car trip for a few hours, play this. You'll arrive hoarse and happy!
I agree - this is a great collection. Timeless and you never get tired of it.
Shades of Bob Dylan. John Prine's early songs were works of genius.

I've never heard this version. I like the one off of Diamonds In The Rough better. How 'bout playing, In Spite Of Ourselves. Or Jesus The Missing Years. Or Space Monkey to name a few.
John Prine! what great songs these are. genuinely heartfelt.
