So close, no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters

Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
And nothing else matters

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know

So close, no matter how far
It couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know

I never opened myself this way hey
Life is ours, we live it our way hey
All these words I don't just say hey
And nothing else matters

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they say
Never cared for games they play
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
And I know, yeah yeah!

So close, no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
No, nothing else matters

My opinion: Really boring song, drawn out forever.
Don't shoot me
Holy hell! Metallica on RP!

I was ambivalent about Metallica and didn't really know their music until a friend took me to this show in Berkeley as a thank you for letting her crash at my house for several months.  It was a loud spectacle at the time and has grown on me over the years.  I usually listen to this at levels that are dangerous for your long term hearing, but it always makes me think about my friend Nikki and the good times that we shared.
God I love this track

I heard an interview in which James Hetfield addressed the issue of "selling out," during the Black Album (i.e. post - And Justice for All) tour. I'm paraphrasing, but his basic response was, "yes, we sold out. We sold out stadiums all of the world." Although I agree with your sentiments, I had to admire his point.
Hey, it was worth a shot.
It's pretty good, but just straight up Metallica would be better!

you could use the "yelp" format.

5 - good.
4 - GARBAGE
3 - SHIT
2 - COMPLETE SHIT
1 - LITERALLY HITLER
The first two tracks on this album are fantastic instrumental pieces.
- The ecstasy of gold
- The call of cthulhu

go and give them a listen.
Moody Blues during their tuneless period. Try Barclay James Harvest, much better.

Agreed.  How 'bout: 1 => "Intolerable"
This is a great song, but this version lacks a lot of "oomph"
Moment of time song:
Listened to this while driving through the hills of Northern Virginia in the earlier morning light to visit DC for the first time. The date is what I remember specifically - November 19, 1999. The last "all odds" date until January 1, 3111.

I love it when HM bands go 'soft'. In this thoughtful number, I always feel as if they're about to break out in kerrang guitars....

8 from the Nottingham jury, which usually can't bear HM.
oh my,

Can't ya just feel the pre-programmed, fake, monotone "Pain-Angst-Anger Despair (PAAD)" formula, being repeated again in this song?

They can have a contest with Foo Fighters foe which band can perform the most songs, that sound just the same...following the PAAD formula!

More Metallica Please Bill!
This is an awesome version, whoa!

I think most bands learn, perform, and record for two reasons:  the love of music/performing, and capitalism - to to earn a living.

What's wrong with that ?

I prefer Tuomas Holopainen's Symphonic Metal works. This is tacked on as it wasn't written with the orchestra in mind at all.
Love RP for mixes like this...

Eh. Just a mediocre band that didn't kill themselves with drug and booze and stayed around a long time and fell into the HUGE void created by all the 1970s bands that retired.

Since there's been a steady decline in RnR, and there are so few bands that play it,  these guys get anointed as some kind of great band.  Like Foo Fighters.

Their music is predictable and boring. It's not bad, just nothing special. Ho Hum.  Same ole, same ole.
Don't know any 70s bands that sound like Metallica. And what makes your taste in music the golden standard to measure music against?

Great Idea - but the Moody Blues did it in 1967

I agree, but this song rises above the rest of the stuff they do. That is why it is on RP.

What? Metallica on Radio Paradise! I love it! Play their version of "Turn the Page" sometime. It's great. And thank you so much for broadening my horizons. I've learned of so many new artists from RP that the FM radio totally ignores. RP FOREVER!!!!

Wow, Metallica on RP!  I was working out of town in a place they were playing.  My crew were desperate to see them.  I told them if they did a good job and got done on time I would take them.  Voted boss of the year.  {#Shifty}  Metallica was good.  I think I like the non symphony version better but this gets a 7 for effort.

All that "just head-banging" (i.e. everything before the Black album) was some of the finest heavy metal ever made, in terms of lyrics, guitar riffs, and arrangements (though production was an issue). Comparing this stuff to that is like comparing apples to oranges. Metallica made a fundamental shift, almost in genre, from a heavy metal band to a top 40 hard rock band.

Huh, may explain why I have never been over impressed with them but my die hard metal head friends loved them.

Not a metal head but like some of it.  Also find Metallica the business pretty petty and it is a business now like Kiss.

Wish we could just have the original song, not this horribly bloated symphonic crap.  Hetfield's vocals are pretty embarrassing in this version too.
I've changed the channel every time this group has been played ever since Napster was taken down and this time is no exception.

Morally reprehensible.

This is one of those albums where you really had to be there.  A friend of mine took me to see the show when this was recorded.
Two nights only at the Berkeley Community Theater with the San Fransisco Symphony...
Had never really listened to Metallica before.  What a show...
This is really good, worth an 8.
Great song from Metallica and i like the voice of James Hetfield, especially with this tune!
Started off so well, until the voice cut in - sounds like very cheesy eurovision contest style singing.

In fact, the whole thing isn't that good.

Awesome song! How does this only has a 6.6? You don't like it, okay. But giving 1s is just sad. The song itself is well composed. I have come a lot of really bad songs on RP, but still I have never given a 1.
This is an AWESOME version of this song ... absolutely love it
Nothing like a little red-blooded, beefy, muscular, music to celebrate the nation's birthday.  Happy Birthday America!  Happy Fourth of July, RPeeps!!!!! {#Yell}
Metallica!!
nice transition :-)
Awesome version ... darker, I like it  :-)
Lousy video, but that's probably fitting. It's all I hear when this song comes on.  {#Lol}

Craptastick!
Like that you would be willing to go out on a limb and play a metallish song like this. Something for all of us

{#Hand}
This song mattersyyyyyyeeeaaaaahhhhh less than nothing else.  What a piece of crap!  Almost as revolting as the personality of the band itself.
Contrived, most of this this strings+rock stuff  The song stands on its own as excellent and the black album is accessible enough metal that my mother could listen to half of it — can we just have the actual song?
Seriously... all those who voted a 1... {#Eh}
I wonder if they really hate this song as well they pointed it or this was only for low the media
Saw their movie "Monster" recently.

A bit sad to see these once depraved rockers sitting around a conference table eating green grapes, baby carrots and drinking out of little Evian water bottles.

Monster? Maybe without fangs or claws anymore.

Then again, I was a little raw when I was 22 too. Funny how age, responsibility and a more refined sense of mortality will keep the Snow Board in the garage.
UGGH!! WHAT I MEAN IS BLECH!!
This would be a lot better of James had realized that his microphone was turned on.

I agree.
I think they are very under-rated.  It's a powerful band, powerful songs, and it's fantastic if they can bring out some of the depth that can be found as well.  Anyway, good on them for still pushing it, and I hope they keep going with it.  People kick'n Hetfield around, and I don't know what that's about, I didn't see anything wrong with his voice.  The guitar was the best part there though, I thought.

They should have switched this up and had the singer drop all his uhhhs after every line. That always makes the song silly to me.

Brilliant song from the best metal band ever.

They were never about the hair, the show, the pure noise, or the attitude.  What set them apart was that they were all about the songs.

If they are a great band, then why not just say so?  Why make a deflationary qualification like "metal"?

Indeed on Coldplay! Or U2. Metallica has some rock classics, you like them or not.

Given that, this orchestra version is awful! The extra instrumentation doesn't give anything to the song, and Hetfield, singing in a lower tone, is dull.
Not a fan of metal or Metallica but this is interesting.
HATE IT.

Interesting. Hetfield or Hammett using a chorus pedal.
Even if you don't like Metallica for itself, S&M is a very unique album, and some of their best tracks appear in it. ex- The Call of Ktulu, Outlaw Torn...
