It's four in the morning, the end of december
I'm writing you now just to see if you're better
New york is cold, but i like where i'm living
There's music on clinton street all through the evening.

I hear that you're building your little house deep in the desert
You're living for nothing now, i hope you're keeping some kind of record.

Yes, and jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear
Did you ever go clear?

Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older
Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder
You'd been to the station to meet every train
And you came home without lili marlene

And you treated my woman to a flake of your life
And when she came back she was nobody's wife.

Well i see you there with the rose in your teeth
One more thin gypsy thief
Well i see jane's awake --

She sends her regards.

And what can i tell you my brother, my killer
What can i possibly say?
I guess that i miss you,
I guess i forgive you
I'm glad you stood in my way.

If you ever come by here, for jane or for me
Your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free.

Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes
I thought it was there for good so i never tried.

And jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear --

Sincerely, leonard cohen

My ISP was having intermittent connectivity issues yesterday, and for a moment I thought it just came back.
Well, at least I get my "American Gods" music fix afterwards.

Yes, still, which might make some happy.

Pales in comparison to Jennifer Warnes' cover album Famous Blue Raincoat
I love this CD. So many good songs on it and this is one of my favourite songs on it.

23/11/23  Hmmm....I find myself thinking the same thing...... 🤔

i want to hear lloyd cole do this one.
Elton John, Billy Joel, Tori amos, Bono all together singing Leonard Cohen? There must be a mistake, they had sign for Franck Sinatra's cover but the deal has changed... To all the minor artist from the world : let Leonard rest in peace.
I like this.  It is an interesting, enjoyable cover.
Why, oh why couldn't RP have an outage when this song comes around? {#Frustrated}
The implicit first person is "L. Cohen" — as per the last line sung. Incongruous. Also, a bit too much breathy vocal angst. Also incongruous. Better versions do exist, but you do have to make the effort. OK, I guess.
I love most of Tori's stuff, and I love this song, but I don't much care for this. Lloyd Cole's version is nice.
To me, Tori's always sang like she's in Oscar tryouts for "Most Overblown Pretense in a Song." I know lots of folks like/love her. It just never 'moved me' to do anything other than change the channel.
I switch off RP for Amos and a few others ...

Thank heavens for local, independent WNRN.
Yawn. Sounds pretty pretentious to me. PSD and BRB.

this is an excellent demonstration of why i can't stand tori - it's easier to pick out when it's a cover of what is otherwise a great song. her singing is so totally overwrought, like every minute of her life has been pure suffering and nothing but.

here's how it's done: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPlpxHhzSp0

...and it's one of the reasons I like her. To each his own.
It would be nice to hear some songs off the Cohen masterpiece: "Songs of Love and Hate"

Agreed.  The down tempo works too.

Jennifer Warnes' version may be 'better' but this is decent.
Like the song. Like the version referenced below and this one. Tori's spin of this I think captures the original reflective mood and strips it down to a solo piano rendition.

Why is Leonard Cohen still a thing?

Talk about bringing down the room!

Let's have Leonard's version...
Lovely. Downbeat. Next.

I agree completely. Still a brilliant song.

...i prefer tori amos' rendition; like jennifer warnes' joan of arc, it's definitively epic...

C'mon, that is not a bad song, but you are 100% correct

Hmmmm can't ejoy it...

The piano adds layers that engage the ear.  If you think her technique is "overworked" I bet you listen to really boring pop music wherein the band can barely play their instruments.

Don't care who sings it, it's a brilliant song.
this is a parody... it must be...
no, please :(
I understand she must have had a tough time growing up or something, but this is severly depressing, with no obvious point to it.
Leave Mr Cohen alone
Always something unsettling about Tori Amos. She doesn't let up. It's always a soundtrack to someone about to break...or go into a reflective tail spin of downward psycho...oppressive babble. I do think this song is interesting and well done...but something as I mentioned seems so unsettling and unpleasant...which makes me never desire to hear Tori Amos.

really really really really nice piano work...  love this song...

You gotta be F#!%in' kidding me!!!

Sickening
This always gives me chills.  Absolutely gut-wrenching.
Sorry, it helps to have a bit more grit and a bit less gush  with Leonard...

Me too. Still, this is a 6.
No thank you....dagnab it tori, enough already!

I find myself in the position of knocking Tori songs too often. She has many great songs.
This I'm afraid is weak, sounds like she's trying to do too much with the song, the Jennifer Warnes version is far superior. IMHO

Agreed. I feel as if I'm obligated to be holding cut raw onions up to my eyes.  Too forced.
The only thing I liked about this is all life 2 seconds prior to its start and the rest of life 2 seconds after its finish.
Nice cover.  Good work, Tori.
I'm not a big fan of Tori Amos, but I must say I like this.
The only thing I like about this version is the piano.
A big Tori fan, I am. Still, after a while ... they all start to sound the same. They just do.
This is a perfect example of why I love Tori.  Hauntingly beautiful.

I used to have the Jennifer Warnes LP with this song on it.  I had never heard the song before, and I remember I didn't like it then. What a dummy. I wish I had it now.

I enjoy/respect/appreciate the value of the originals and the absolute skill of his song/lyric writing abilities, but it's kinda like Bob Dylan for me. If I'm going to hear it in a setting where I'm not going to be analyzing the structure/metaphor/influences, someone else is better singing it :)
Lovely rendition!  {#Clap}

agreed! Although this song is so good, I'll bet it works in many versions.

I love Leonard Cohen's version of this.  Wow...nice to hear Tori do it.

I like this and this song. Jennifer Warner did a good cover of this as well.
AMAZING cover. one of my favorite tori songs ever.
Very good cover, in my opinion.
Her live version one one of the To Venus & Back singles is pretty good - this pales in comparison.
Ehhh, this version gets a 5. Jennifer Warnes version gets a 9 and so does Leonard's original. A bit too much "emoting" in this one, the fantastic story of the song gets lost.
thanks for playing tori! maybe a request from choirgirl hotel, pandora's aquarium?
