The tale I'm gonna tell

Together they discovered with each other the perfections of an outdoor day
They had won some kinda prize
For selling way more stuff than the other guys
They were the shrewdest unit-movers
So their bosses got 'em tours of the countryside

But she couldn't work up any words
She kinda lost her shoes and lost her mind
And smashed her phone upon a fallen pine
Darryl couldn't talk at all
He wondered how the trees had grown to be so tall
He calculated all the height and width and density
For insurance purposes
And at the desktop there's crying sounds
For all the projects due
And noone else is around
And the sprinklers that come on at 3am
Sound like crowds of people asking
"Are you happy what you're doing?"

I enjoy these guys both musically and lyrically. Their themes are very affecting.
When he says "the sprinklers that come on at 3AM sound like crowds of people asking 'Are you happy what you're doing?'" I sort of choke up. Maybe it's time to start thinking about a career change... 
i really like the melancholy to the chorus underneath the pop overlay...

Is it just me, or does everything I've heard on RP from these guys (and especially this song) sound like they were a bunch of guys from an IT company who got together and formed a band. Every time I hear them I think I'm listening to the next big scheme from the three guys from Office Space...
make it stop! Sounds like something the Partridge Family would do 
It's gone from a 6 to a 7 for me, and I wouldn't be surprised to have it go another notch.

Overall, one of the more painful fits of odd lyrics into a song.
I don't know why, but I find it great too!

Haven't gotten into this album like I did sophmoric, but I haven't given it the proper headphone treatment either.
Nifty. They had fit well on the soundtrack for "Royal Tenenbaums".
Please make it stop. 
His vocals remind me of "Schoolhouse Rock," in a comfortable, reassuring way.
This is one of my favorite songs of last year. On one of the best albums of last year.
Typical for a whole bunch of their songs...
Know nothing about the band but really like the sound. I guess banal is in the mind of the beholder. :D

Yeah you guys nailed it. This whole album is really well developed. I too saw them open for Pete Yorn, in dallas. One of the more striking things about Grandaddy's live set is their use of video during the songs. Sometimes the video was completely random - old footage of nature films, while during "Yeah is what we had" the music and the video synced perfectly.
They are on their own headlining tour right now (in dallad Sept 23) if you like them even just a little, you should go.
heard about these guys on NPR...quite an interesting bunch of guys to say the least
This is a great CD. I saw them perform most of these songs a couple months before it was released and they were much better that Pete Yorn who they opened for. This is my favorite song on the CD. 
I really like it.. these guys are great! They sound kind of like Radiohead mixed with Neil Young

I saw Grandaddy open up for Pete Yorn a few months ago in Detroit. They look nothing like they sound. A cross between farmers and ZZ Top is guess on the looks front. Mellow rock on the sound front. I liked them, especially as a nice surprise to open for PEte Yorn">
I had an interesting discussion about this song with my mom... I loved it and she didn't understand what it was about (completely didn't get it). I've had that disconnect with her before about... Dilbert. She totally never finds Dilbert funny. So we discussed some of the mind-numbing realities of living in Cube-land corporate America, slowly losing your soul, and then I played it again for her.
