I have not been home since you left long ago
I'm thumbing my way back to heaven
Counting steps walking backwards on the road
I'm counting my way back to heaven

I can't be free with what's locked inside of me
If there was a key you took it in your hand
There's no wrong or right but I'm sure there's good and bad
The questions linger overhead

No matter how cold the winter, there's a springtime ahead
I'm thumbing my way back to heaven
I wish that I could hold you, I wish that I had
Thinking 'bout heaven

I let go of the rope thinking that's what held me back
And in time I've realized it's now wrapped around my neck
I can't see what's next from this lonely overpass
Hang my head and count my steps as another car goes past

All the rusted signs we ignored throughout our lives
Choosing the shiny ones instead
I turned my back, now there's no turning back
Mmmmmmm

No matter how cold the winter, there's a springtime ahead
I smile, but who am I kidding?
I'm just walking the miles, every once in a while get a ride
I'm thumbing my way back to heaven
I'm thumbing my way back to heaven
I'm thumbing my way back to heaven

rate it 7
Yet another toneless, emotionless performance. Time to give PJ a much needed rest!

I catch your drift, but you can't expect a creative band to stick to what they've done once and not develop (for better or worse).
There are basically two kinds of music that interest me: music as pleasant distraction, which is fine as far as it goes, or music as intelligent, honest, heartfelt response to life, and here I tend to give Pearl Jam a lot of credit. And I like Eddie Vedder\'s voice(to each his own here I guess). Do get a little frustrated with his enunciation. As much as I admire this lyric, and as hard as I concentrated once it struck me, couldn\'t quite figure out where he was thumbing his way back to. \"Heaven\" was rendered a very indistinct mono-sylable, line after line. Interesting. I tend to find Eddy\'s existential ambivalence honest, intelligent, and rather endearing. Always seems to me that he would benefit enormously from a dose of advanced Buddhist metaphysics. I referred to an online \"Riot Act\" lyrics sheet, and it\'s convinced me to buy the CD. :notworthy:  :notworthy:
A little sluggish, but I like it ~ :p
