There is freedom within, there is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead, many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're travelling with me

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Now I'm towing my car, there's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof
In the paper today tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the T.V. page

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Now I'm walking again to the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and release

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
Don't ever let them win

I saw that FM version with Neil and Mike Campbell in AUCKLAND. When they played “I got you” the whole place roared and sang along. Amazing.

But, Mick came out later and said something about how they had to remind Neil that he’d written a song that only comes once a generation (true). Implied he was sick of doing it. And, after doing the first verses, Goat Girl came out and brayed the remainder of the song. Sacrilege!!!
Jesus Christ cover after cover. Stop!!!!!!!
haven't heard this song for while. Really nice for a rainy night...
I absolutely LOATHE audience participation in songs I adore. HAAAAATE the clapping. Anyone else?
What a beautiful, stripped down version. Gets an 8 from me.
Great song    catchy riff   ..love it.
I had a dream that this song was over.  And finally it was.

Interested, I just popped over to Youtube for that. There's a live version on there, so I clicked Play. Wow.

Wow. Just... No. Not even a little bit. I mean... some of it was in tune, but only in passing through from one side to the other. And so short of breath.

So I tried the studio mix. Clearer vocals, certainly, but without the passion. Tremolo substituting for power. And the instruments are... well, they don't sound... like grown-up ones.

I don't write many comments here, but I had to write this. Sorry, but I still prefer any of the NF/CH versions.
I prefer "The head and the hearts" cover of this, it is a 10
Prefer the studio version and the claps are sucky.
Cute FM followed by their new lead singer. I like it.  I used to listen to WHFS and WGTB during the 70's.  They where both examples of radio programming could (and almost never was) be. Thanks for creating another level of intelligence to the practice of broadcasting music.
Nice lyrics to this song.
Love this version!
7 Worlds Collide has such great collaborating artists on it.
Yeah, the claps kinda suck. Great song though!
I really like this acoustic version. VERY nice.

I have always loved this song.  I do prefer the original version but this is still very good.  Shows just how great a song it is.
Always love hearing this version.
Kind of sly for Bill to play this after a Lindsay Buckingham-penned Fleetwood Mac song, since Neil Finn replaced him in the band.

Justifiably so...
Wow...what a beautiful version of this song!  You can see Finn has real musical talent—not just a studio musician.
Bill likes his Finns!
It's a good version but I hate when the audience sings and the artist stops singing.
I used to get bored when this track came on; but after reading the lyrics and hearing the audience sing along, this has quickly become my favorite version of this song. Thanks, Bill, for keeping it in rotation. :-)
Crowded House is one of my all-time favourite bands....but this song grates on me.

It's a dream come true when this song is over. Up there with Phil Collins tunes with it's ability to induce violent vomiting.
Love this version.
Great song, great version.
Reminds me of my honeymoon, this song.

Yep. The original is an icon as much as Let it Be. This isn't nearly as nice, and it's not even touching in a "remember how great this tune was?" way.
Man, some people get up on the wrong side of the bed I guess.

A 10 from me.
When it comes to maudlin sentimentality, this is not really any different than a Lawrence Welk concert.  Topped off with a generous dollop of schmaltz by the audience sing-a-long.

Ah crap, another effing Finn Bros song today.  RP's needle is seriously stuck in the scratched track — I'm guessing we're pushing on 5 Finn songs per day....  Release the voles!!
one of the best  {#Daisy} {#Daisy} {#Daisy}  ps was there at a live show
oh yay. a sing-along.

Very impressed you carry one about on your person on the off-chance you need to throw it. Did you get it off ebay?

For some reason I like this more than the studio version. The slower tempo adds something that moves me...
Rating probably skewed by the fact that I have always loved Finn's voice—it's so pitch-perfect. It's a fun change to hear this version.

Too much crowd noise for this song.
Vastly improved by the ever so slightly out-of-time clapping around the middle, and what's that flat half-hearted arpeggio before the limp "C'mon"? This time I was determined to listen to the very bitter end, and I managed, but it's positively PSD next time! I'll try again in five years, round about the same time as I'll check if I've grown to like Crazy for You.
The live version though undoubtably entertaining the audience is no where as good as the studio album version.
The audience clapping and whistling is very distracting.

very nice classic song. Like it very much from time to time!

Didn't like it then, don't like it now.
so mawkish!
hey where is that vomiting  smile?

Had to log in to say IF THIS AIN'T GODLIKE I don't know what is. Oh. Already rated it. Godlike. All right. Godlike Squared, then. Cheers!
I saw Crowded House perform this song when it was new. Before the show, Neil asked the audience whether they wanted to see their professional or "hamburger" show. The audience chose "hamburgers". Later, after a very refreshing, innovative and eclectic performance, Neil asked whether the audience had any requests. Then Neil responded by saying "we were hoping that you might ask us to play one of our songs". Nevertheless, the whole band improvised it by ear on the spot. I have never since witnessed such a sensibility and astute musical ability in any player, let alone an entire band. I'll never forget them or this performance, "hamburgers" and all.
Fine album with some great guest stars, including my man Mr. Vedder.
Very talented.
Sappy.
Audience clapping always ruins a good tune.
Great music from an iconic kiwi
Loving this clapping!
Nice song. The audience makes this live version; they sound great.
Nice juxtaposition of songs

I did see Crowded House on this past tour and your words ring true.  Absolutely a wonderful concert and yes I did sing and yes it was very off-tune, but fun nonetheless.

True.

LOL, for so many reasons.  Great tune.
10.

Honestly. Who the hell can do this?
I love this live version. It gave me goosebumps when the crowd started singing, and I think they sing it very well. :-)

I agree.  I think that is the best compliment to a singer/songwriter when the crowd:

1.  Knows the words to a song you wrote.
2.  Sings in tune
3.  Sings very loud and gets the timing right.

Great version. Why are so many people hatin' on the live? I guess if you care more about producers than you do about artists, you might feel a lil' upset.

love Neil Finn... what a great musician in every sense of the word!

I live near Jacksonville, Florida, which has a god-awful reputation as one of the worst towns to perform in.  This was brought painfully home to me when I went to see Tom Waits and had three goombas a couple of rows behind me yelling such illuminating phrases as "Tom Waits!  Hell yeah!" and "He's got a guitar!".  Now I drive to ATL and catch acts at the Fox Theatre.  Much less painful.

I really like Neil Finn.

Went to a concert that was billed as "The Finn Brothers".  Neil's brother walked on stage, started singing and I new right away that I was going to hate the concert.   I DID hate it.  His brother was so full of himself and untalented, it was sickening.

Went to another concert last year with just Neil and his band (including his talented son) and really enjoyed it.  Neil has some songs that have really brought me up when there were low times in my life.
aaargh.  This guy and his brother have between them put back the cause of music in NZ about 30 years - everyone freakin loves them so every spotty youth trying to get laid grabs an acoustic guitar and pours his aching heart out "just like the Finns", and the girls fall for it ...  it's a vicious cycle with no end except a spiral of despair and bleeding eardrums.   AND to make it worse, this is a well dodgy version of this song... man, when will crowds learn that they can't sing?   PEOPLE! THAT'S WHY YOU'RE NOT UP ON STAGE.

If you ever listen to Leo Kottke's live album from My Feet are Smiling, you hear two guys in the background just before a song trying to get into the live recording. I distinctly hear the "in" guy yell "F##KING ROOKIE" just before Leo is going to start. Not sure if Leo knew who he was yelling that to. :)

not all songs sound better slowed down... this version is an overlong derdge.
Mediocre. Not painful, but certainly not noteworthy. Getting a little old.
Edit: I just noticed that I've made just about the same comments 3 times now. At least I am consistent in my feelings about it. I'll stop now.

A less than brilliant version of this fantastic song.
Produces an emptiness to which I cannot relate due to the simple Twist of Fate that this lyrical novocaine follows Dylan...er, otherwise thanks Bill

This song reminds me of the waiting room at my dentist's office. Well, the studio version does anyway. This version reminds me of the waiting room at my dentist's office when I've got a head full of morphine for a root canal and everyone else in the waiting room and that little television and the kids playing with toys in the corner are all singing and clapping along with the song the dentist is playing on the radio.

I think it is because there are a lot of folks like me who love this song and really appreciate a live version regardless of whatever flaws it may include. But I could be wrong.

That sounds equally unbearable.
