Won't you let me walk you home from school?
Won't you let me meet you at the pool?
Maybe Friday I can
Get tickets for the dance
And I'll take you, ooh ooh

Won't you tell your dad get off my back?
Tell him what we said 'bout Paint It Black
Rock and roll is here to stay
Come inside where it's okay
And I'll shake you, ooh ooh

Won't you tell me what you're thinking of?
Would you be an outlaw for my love?
If it's so, well let me know
If it's no, well I can go
I won't make you, ooh ooh

There was a music video for Paint It Black back in the days of the Midgnight Special and USA Nightflight. Very disturbing. Featured an overweight Downs Syndrome man with darkened eyes seeming working at an amusement park after hours. Lots of shots of him wandering around looking nervous and a roller coaster. I tried finding it a few years ago with no luck. The suggestiveness of it was way too harsh for today's sensibilities.
This is one I didn't realize had an original version, because Garbage has a bitchin' cover of it on one of their singles.

Copy this link into a browser and listen to a podcast from last year with Mr. Stephens that was quite enjoyable.

But then again, you probably got a whiff of all of this just by being there.  Sounds like fun.

It was written in 1971, so as of this date, they are 45 year old lyrics. Yikes!

There's a decent cover of this on Disc 1 of that (relatively) new Wilco box set.

Alpha Mike Foxtrot: Rare Tracks 1994-2014 (4CD)
That same version by Wilco is also on the Big Star tribute album, which was recorded in '98 but didn't get released until 2006.

I've never seen nor heard this album pictured below (and it's not on youtube)...has anybody out there listened to it and care to comment?

"Back of a Car" – Gin Blossoms 2:43
"Nighttime" – The Afghan Whigs 4:47
"The Ballad of El Goodo" – Matthew Sweet 4:18
"Don't Lie to Me" – Juliana Hatfield 3:05
"You Get What You Deserve" – Idle Wilds 3:06
"Give Me Another Chance" – Whiskeytown 4:14
"When My Baby's Beside Me" – Kelly Willis 3:02
"Jesus Christ" – Teenage Fanclub 2:53
"What's Goin Ahn" – The Posies 3:22
"Thirteen" – Wilco 3:25
"Hot Thing" – Big Star 4:12

It was moving, sad and yes excellent.

Wow!  I stumbled on Kurt's post from 2003 when he was pleading for some Urge Overkill (and others) here on Radio Paradise, to no avail.

Just wanted to add that I recently heard both Sister Havana and Somebody Else's Body for the first time in A LONG TIME, and you know what...THEY BOTH SOUNDED GREAT!!!  I'm with ya' Kurt!

How about adding a little Urge Overkill to the festivities here, as it's never too late!

Yes. Very strange: I don't think I heard Big Star at all as a teen—and that was a handful of years after the band split up—but this song took me back to those years when I first heard it about five years ago. Ex post facto nostalgia.
More Big Star!!!!

Bill is holding steadfast.
He did this with The Pixies for years.
He finally gave in but verbally complains every once in a while about his not liking the Pixies.

How could you not like Big Star? {#Mrgreen}

This is his show.
And it's still pretty darn good... even without "September Gurls".
But it would be so much better with it.

If he was from Venus, would he feed us with a spoon?
If he was from Mars, wouldn't that be cool?
Standing right on campus, would he stamp us in a file?
Hangin' down in Memphis all the while.

(chorus:)

Children by the million sing for Alex Chilton when he comes 'round
They sing "I'm in love. What's that song?
I'm in love with that song."

Cerebral rape and pillage in a village of his choice.
Invisible man who can sing in a visible voice.
Feeling like a hundred bucks, exchanging good lucks face to face.
Checkin' his stash by the trash at St. Mark's place.

(chorus)

I never travel far, without a little Big Star

Runnin' 'round the house, Mickey Mouse and the Tarot cards.
Falling asleep with a flop pop video on.
If he was from Venus, would he meet us on the moon?
If he died in Memphis, then that'd be cool, babe.

(chorus)

Very well said! The song balances on the edge, but ends up on the right side of the fence. It must be the outright earnestness and the memory of how it felt once to be thirteen. I think everyone can relate.
I always wished this song was much longer.......

I've uploaded this song but it got a sorry! Probably Bill had a better quality MP3(?). Not the first time such a thing happened, but I'm glad it made it to the playlist anyway. I could hardly believe a song like this wouldn't, because there aren't too many lovesongs so beautiful and pure (innocent) as this one. Really wonderful.
This song just nails the innocense of Middle School, just as kids are hitting their awkward, adolescense. This song sums up those emotions perfectly. Just like four or five of Big Stars other songs (Back of the Car, September Gurls, Chris Bell's "You and Your Sister"). These are all just amazing and I can't help but feel emotional everytime I hear them. This song makes me want to learn the guitar. Thank you. MORE BIG STAR!
Packs huge emotional impact without being syrupy. This album is stellar. The entire thing should be in the rotation.

I agree with you, there is too much "Progressive" music being played, and not enough emphasis on good, basic rock, which all good power pop bands display, I would love to hear some Jellyfish.
