Poor little house in the country,
18 dogs, an m-16 for company.
some boys commin over the horizon,
they'll be lookin for some hospitality.

Come on in boys the door's wide open,
but I'll warn you my dogs were born to win.
I'll take the greastest of pleasure,
in watchin you torn limb from limb.

Rumors startin down in the village,
those boys aint been heard of since that day.
But if anybody comes round askin questions,
Well I've got it worked out just what I'm gonna say.

Come on in boys the door's wide open,
but I'll warn you my dogs were born to win.
I'll take the greastest of pleasure,
in watchin you torn limb from limb.

Poor little house in the country
18 dogs, an m-16 for company
hautboys commin over the horizon,
they'll be lookin for some hospitality.

Although I really dig the song, the whole "production" of it, l find very unique.... Ex husband, ex wife and, the daughter the two of them had... Putting out this hauntingly eerie yet, beautiful piece of work! Thnx RP crew! Delightful "first" again!

From the Dear Ms. Oakley,  never truer words ever spoken.... Especially from a female! God bless her!

Excellent guitar on a bizarre subject.
theres a sandy denny vibe

A M-16 is a assault rifle.
If this was only a song about the "not-so" Proud Boys. Let the dogs loose.
And there was me, thinking a Hautboy was an oboe.

Such a sweet little ditty.
Jeepers that album title with a guy and 2 pretty girls on the cover. Is it just me !!!!!!  Mind you he IS wearing a cowboy hat
Thanks RP ! After the set of amazing guitar you cap it with this - lovely mellow tune combined with amusingly violent lyrics
"18 dogs, an m-16 for company"

Makes that whole #metoo thing pretty tame.
Outstanding! Brings Fairport Convention to mind.
Meh. It's just a scene from Sandy Passage. "He was a Czech count, he played violin, and he was really very sweet. And Mother got rid of him in 15 MINUTES!"
Beautiful and scary!

*bump

Story is a lot like the "Lady of Shalott" by Loreena McKennitt, based on Tennyson's Arthurian-themed poem (according to the article; wasn't sure how to cite it).

This is an outstandingly beautiful song with some seriously Game of Thrones-level lyrics.

Some really good and some are like '' black the sky, weapons fly.save them for your race.In a race  I'd vacuum all if I'd, but nature abhors vacuum, finally I inject a lttle dose of entropy. My  welcome never been so absurd.

I first heard this song some years ago, and figured the same. Woman living alone out in the boonies, a prime target for unwanted advances. It's pretty easy to write a backstory as to why she lives alone, and why she has some apprehension about strange men comin' 'round.

Nice doggie. Niiiice doggie...
I like the song but - creepy! Almost touched PSD
What a song.....nice lead in....sweet vocals... down home instrumentation, then BAM.  18 dogs all over you.  I think I'll stay home.
From from that day onward she was never bothered by those pesky Jehovah's Witnesses again...

Kind of a modern day (albeit 1999) murder ballad.
I'd never listened to the lyrics before. Hmmm. Yep.

Compares and would be on same playlist as song from Dixie Chicks about abusive husband named "Earl"...

Great lyrics. I particularly enjoyed the... "Uuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh arrrrrrrrrrrr huuuuuuuu arrrrrrr ehhhhhhhhhhhh" bit
The beginning always reminds me on the stunning album "Ezekiel"  by the basque band Itoiz. Someone know this one? Definitely worth a try, strongly recommended here!
The whole album is great listening as well...
Great tune - despite listening to RP a ton this was the first time I stopped and noticed this song.  Thanks!
Lovely and grim at the same time. Great song.
f you like this song.....look up "Lucky Break" from the same album......sublime guitar and vocalsi

Only problem with this band was that they just produced the one album that I can find.  All the tracks are good, but I like many others on the release more than this one.  I really enjoy the way the guitars play off each other.

Definite Sandy Denny influence. Not nearly as good as the great Sandy Denny, tho...simplistic in comparison. And I agree with other posters that they need to change their name...what are they thinking with a counter-productive name like that?

Still, likable and worthy of a 7...

18 dogs would require a significant pooper-scooper campaign.

Talking of linguistic differences, the verb "to dog", like the term "bareback", now has a slightly more salacious meaning on this side of the Pond. So the question is: does Hank go dogging? ;)

The meaning is the same there as well. Another song on the album says as much. The whole thing is outstanding.

18 Dogs and an M-16?  What is this, Sarah Palin's campaign song?

"Speaking of Sarah Palin, she said she's a life-long member of the National Rifle Association. Which may explain why she's in favor of shotgun weddings." —Conan O'Brien
reminds me of Fairport Convention or Fotheringay

Well sir, that may be true for various reasons, but unless I missed it, the whole issue of "who let the dogs out?" has never really been clarified.   {#Think}
