Moving forward using all my breath
Making love to you was never second best
I saw the world crashing all around your face
Never really knowing it was always mesh and lace

I'll stop the world and melt with you
You've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time
There's nothing you and I won't do
I'll stop the world and melt with you

(You should know better)
Dream of better lives the kind which never hates
(You should see why)
Trapped in the state of imaginary grace
(You should know better)
I made a pilgrimage to save this humans race
(You should see why)
Never comprehending the race has long gone bye

(Let's stop the world) I'll stop the world and melt with you
(Let's stop the world) You've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time
(Let's stop the world) There's nothing you and I won't do
(Let's stop the world) I'll stop the world and melt with you

The future's open wide

The future's open wide

(Let's stop the world) I'll stop the world and melt with you
(Let's stop the world) I've seen some changes but it's getting better all the time
(Let's stop the world) There's nothing you and I won't do
(Let's stop the world) I'll stop the world and melt with you

The future's open wide

Hmm, hmm, hmm
Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm
Hmm, hmm, hmm

GREAT TUNE!  Thanx RP!
Never really knowing it was always mesh and lace

For 40 years I thought it was "mission light" or something like that.  I wonder what kind of eggcorns and misheard lyrics the old timers heard in the 1950s and 1960s.
forty years went by at a glance at modern english.

i know i should like this but that beat gets on my nerves
the first 50 times I heard this I thought it OK, a catchy little tune, but enough already.  just make it go away

Nothing wrong with getting old when you consider the alternative.

“rediculous”

Indeed.

me too!!
This brings back such fond memories of dancing to this like nobody was watching with my new wife at our wedding.  We still drop everything and dance to it when it comes on.  22 years and counting!
Well, this certainly takes me back to a certain time of my life... a mostly good time...
This hits hard still, despite it being played so often (not here, just...everywhere else)...perhaps because it evokes those years, which I miss, so clearly.
For forty years I never really knew the lyrics were "Never really knowing it was always mesh and lace". Mesh and lace? I'd always mutter "missionless" when singing along...

Great song and great lyrics, love it.  And also love the slowed down Nouvelle Vague cover with the dreamy French accent
Oh, nostalgia. I was a youth. I was reckless and in love. I melt into this song.
Reminds me of every college party i attended at the U of I in the 80's.  good times...
I was 14 when this came out.  So much promise, so many dreams.  I am now 53..........getting old fucking sucks!

DRUMZZZZZ! Yay!!!
"Making love to you was never second best."

One of my top rock and roll lyrics.

As it should be. Now replace it with the single mix that was on MTV all the time and has the call-and-response vocals. (just kidding, Bill)
there is a severe lack of mentions of Nicolas Cage in the comments.

This is music. Just so pleasing to the ear. No bullshit. Love Camera Obscure. Most of their songs are super lovely. Makes me happy as I should be. Hope they do to you too..
I had never heard this in the 80s.  But I met my future husband, a former radio DJ and programmer, around 2000. (He's a wee older than me ;)  And he played this for me,  trying to connect with, as he called it "an 80s child" LOL.
So now I love this song, never having heard it in the 80s, and remember all that was exciting about a new relationship back in 2001, with this person who is now my hubby.

May 80s music live forever!

Any kind nostalgia that exists for the original is obliterated by this version.
Hello, overplayed.

Doesn't even sound like the original vocalist to me.  Is it the same guy?
believe it or not, i heard an awesome cover of this by Richard Cheese... :)

good stuff.
Wow, I feel so let down. That opening guitar promised me more than this lame cover could ever deliver.
I gotta add to the WHY???
The original=just so good.
This version is like MGD Light when the original was like Guiness.

"Watery and Insipid" vs "The Nectar of the Gods"

I miss the muddy drums coming out of the break.

My two cents.
I hate it when artists piss on their own legacy.  This is a very lame redo of a reallly strong original song.  1.
This song was the theme song for my high school graduating class.  However I never managed to like it, despite that... or maybe because of that.
Never second best, maybe third or fourth. That is what I used to sing to my girlfriend back in the day.

My thoughts exactly...and I'll also add that this song in any version is so overplayed elsewhere that no one would miss it if it were clipped entirely from the playlist.

Straight off Best of Gayties Disco Bars.  This track follows Safety Daance.

This song is nothing to sneeze at.  I would be willing to bet that this song (the original, that is) was the biggest cross-over hit for a ten year period.  I can think of no other song that was played in so many different places.

I agree.  This is a masterpiece.  Sure, a one-hit wonder.  But not wonderbread as some of the posts here would indicate.  Just play the original version that a billion people know this song by.

this song reminds me of that high quality movie valley girl . this song was played during the credits.
"Moving forward using all my breath... Making love to you was never second-best." Sexiest lyrics ever written. I still break into an air drum routine every time I hear it... a quarter-century later!
The song that has started more bands and sold more mascara than any other. Nice segue, Bill.

Um, now it's Taco Bell....
I mistakenly purchased this album in the 90's thinking that it had the original version of this song. What a disappointment, not to mention the other crap on the album.
What a gawd-awful version. It sounds like they're rushing through the song because they have a bad case of runs from all the Guinness they drank the night before, and they'll be able to relieve themselves. Just as soon. As this song is over.
I feel so lucky that I do not watch (or hear) commercial tv; I did not even have access to MTV in the 80's can you believe it - and I hear this song and it has no associations and I Like It. Turn off the TV and grow the brain cells
i am unfamiliar with the "original" version. this is the only version i've ever heard - the same version that was on the Best of 120 Minutes Vol 1 compilation, I think.

Really, why? Why screw it up? Why play it?
OK, now I feel stupid because I didn't realize this wasn't the original version. I think Kermit the Frog could sing this song though, and I'd still like it.

I think there are like 3-4 covers of this by the same band. WTF?
That is probably related to the free show they did in Baltimore's Inner Harbor back in... maybe... 2001. They had a great turnout, there were dozens of us there, but we were outnumbered by the people who strolled by to ask "uh... who's that?" It was a very sad day. And when I called my friend to tell her how far they had sunk, she said "yeah, they played a used car dealership in Albuquerque last month." So I'm guessing the covers, and their inability to go out gracefully, have something to do with some expensive habits they may have developed back in the day?

nice little power pop nugget methinks. used effectively in the film Valley Girl.

OK when it first came out, but it has been overplayed so much I can't stand to listen anymore--gave it a 3 because it really isn't a bad song, just way too overexposed.
In defiance of Burger King's shameless act of attempted brainwashing, I will allow myself to still really, really, really, like this little ditty. Oh and also to resist the bacon double cheeseburger. I am strong-slash-invincible
ahhhh,college memories!! love this
I can't say that about "80s music", and yes I lived through the 80s.
yes, but saying ALL 80s music is the same is just as much a generalization. It's like calling the 70s the disco era and forgetting about punk rock. Modern English is not the same as U2. Kajagoogoo is not the same as Crowded House. Gary Numan is not the Cure. Every generation, every decade has produced something, many things, worthwhile and timeless. You have to have the 80s to have the 90s to have the 00s to have anything at all. Don't understand why people don't get this... :~ Having said that, I grew up in the 80s and even back then never cared for this song. I think I was traumatized by the video.
Good song but waaaaay overplayed in the non-RadioParadise.com world.

Bill is taunting me again, no doubt! I referred to this godawful version in some song comments about Grant Lee Buffalo's cover of Echo & the bunnymen's Killing Moon earlier today.....
I love this song...the original I mean...don't like this version at all.
Yep this still does the business.
i love jason mraz's version of this!!!!!!!!!!!

You remember the unbeleivable coincidence that brought us together? We'll find each other again and again in lives past, present and future...won't we? Right now, though, bittersweet longing.
Uh, Cindy, I suggest you change your telephone number and address immediately...otherwise you might find Brown1971 standing beneath your window clutching a boombox that's blasting Modern English. (click here)

To say you had to live during a particular era to enjoy its music isn't a very high recommendation. IMHO, music should have a timeless quality to it. If it was good then it should be good now. Take the Beatles or Mozart, both sound great today. I can't say that about "80s music", and yes I lived through the 80s.
I always loved this song! I think I agree with the version problem...the one I was thinking of would have definitely been a 10. But I was glad to hear it anyway!

Very funny following "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" (the universal reference to LSD) with "I Melt With You." This must be the "trippy" set.

Gee, that's just what I was thinking. I never actively liked Modern English but the song is part of the soundrack of so many of our lives (Cindy Newsome would say the same, no doubt). Where's the Umph? Call me a purist but I'd want the original if I'd want this at all.
I appreciated hearing this version, since I'm soooo sick & tired of the original. Which never, er, melted with me. Don't know why. It's still a part of my musical history.
Good memories dancing with me future wife to the original version of this.
Gets a 5 from me. I loved the original version. This version just doesn't have the same Umph, for lack of a better word.
this group certainly got some mileage from this song. not a bad song, but WAY overplayed. A "5". Why did they feel the need to remaster this? just lowered to a 4--does not get better upon repeated listenings.
How many slightly different versions of this song by the same band ARE there, anyway? I have heard at least 2 others besides this one. What was the point?

the original version was far better - imho whatever .. the backwards reverb on the piano is way off the vocal track seems too .. mmm whats the word .. Affected :( To put on a false show of; simulate.) yup . trying to much - contrived.. not relaxed enough something like that. . production too sparse . acoustic gtr seems to be MIA lots more to say but - not as exciting at all.
Wowser, I always though that this was the Cure. I need to check up on my 80's music knowledge...... Silly Goose!
