Not exactly Etta's finest moment.

I guess if you say it often enough some people might start to believe it. After all, he was a southern white man who lived in the 50's. He must be a racist bigot. They are all like that down there, right?

Heard this yesterday, folks.
Let's not forget that it was written by the great team of Leiber and Stoller and Elvis' version was based on Freddie Bell and the Bellboys live performance of the song he saw them do in Vegas. Let's not have the tired old accusation of stealing, it makes as much sense as saying Etta stole it from Big Mama as well. Etta does a nice version but check out Junior Well's take on it.

Blecccchhhhh!!!!
No. Your girlfriend catchin' you with HER hot Mom!
Ms. James puts the 'dawg' in the hound.
Still, it ain't Big Mama...
c.
Just not enough energy in this version. Sorry, Etta.

Elvis NEVER said that. Nor have I ever heard that Elvis withheld royalties or credit from anyone so he can hardly be said to have stolen songs.

Matter of fact, by all accounts Elvis Presley was very respectful of African American musicians, socialized with them, and took his time out to help some of them get their careers going. From wikipedia:
Little Richard said of Presley: "He was an integrator. Elvis was a blessing. They wouldn't let black music through. He opened the door for black music."<5> B. B. King said he began to respect Presley after he did Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup material and that after he met him, he thought the singer really was something else and was someone whose music was growing all the time right up to his death.<6>
Up to the mid 1950s black artists had sold minuscule amounts of their recorded music relative to the national market potential. Black songwriters had mostly limited horizons and could only eke out a living. But after Presley purchased the music of African American Otis Blackwell and had his "Gladys Music" company hire talented black songwriter Claude Demetrius, the industry underwent a dramatic change. In the spring of 1957 Presley invited African American performer Ivory Joe Hunter to visit Graceland and the two spent the day together, singing "I Almost Lost My Mind" and other songs. Of Presley, Hunter commented, "He showed me every courtesy, and I think he's one of the greatest."<7>

I love Etta, but this is a bad version of an overdone song.
The original was Big Moma Thorton in 53. Etta does it justice!
Educate me, is this before Elvis or after? Which ever, I like!
bleh, the barking was a little much.

Love Etta James, but I think there is a rule whereby any song mentioning a "hound dog" always sucks.
This song is the audio equivalent of your mom catching you with your hot high-school girlfriend.
Blecccchhhhh!!!!
That lady knows how to sing it! 10

Big Mama is to rock and roll as Mary is to Jesus

This is an example of why I listen to RP: a little music history, a little musical education, a lot of cool new and old tunes that I'd have never heard otherwise. Could do without Etta's barking, though. I have tapes of my old girlfriends for that.
Wow, I would have to agree with a few of the previously mentioned statements about this song. I have never heard anything like this from Etta, but I like it (but then again I like the stuff from her that I do know). Good to hear a woman really belting out the Blues.

What would be a good album to start with, I really like what I hear...?

Etta has a HUGE catalogue of music and has been around for a long time. I know you can find lots of music you will enjoy. :)
