Day after Christmas
I throw some clothes on in the dark
The smell of cold
Car seat is freezing
The world is sleeping
I am numb

Up the stairs to her apartment
She is balled up on the couch
Her mom and dad went down to Charlotte
They're not home to find us out

And we drive
Now that I have found someone
I'm feeling more alone
Than I ever have before

She's a brick and I'm drownin' slowly
Off the coast and I'm headed to nowhere
She's a brick and I'm drownin' slowly

They call her name at seven-thirty
I pace around the parking lot
And I walk down to buy her flowers
And sell some gifts that I got

Can't you see
It's not me you're dying for
Now she's feeling more alone
Then she ever has before

She's a brick and I'm drownin' slowly
Off the coast and I'm headed to nowhere
She's a brick and I'm drownin' slowly

As weeks went by
It showed that she was not fine
They told me, "Son it's time to tell the truth," and
She broke down and I broke down
Cause I was tired of lying

Driving back to her apartment
For the moment we're alone
Yeah she's alone
And I'm alone
Now I know it

She's a brick and I'm drownin' slowly
Off the coast and I'm headed to nowhere
She's a brick and I'm drownin' slowly

Apparently you haven't seen very many album covers.  This one is pretty lazy but there are hundreds which are far worse.

For the record, I love the song, the album, and the artist, but every time I hear this, I think of that wedding.

Really depressing anecdote.  I think of this now every time I hear this song.
Still an amazing song.

As a native North Carolinian, I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize for foisting this boring hack on the world.

However, I would like to point out that John Coltrane and Doc Watson were also born here, so perhaps that makes up for it.

Bravo!...these are the comments that are a blast to read. The song embedded into a interesting story and setting.

As opposed to the comments from Jack Black's "Barry" in the film High Fidelity. The Barry's in the RP listening world are just so fitter than you when it comes to this art form we call music.

That's hysterical. It also makes me weep for the youth of today.
I like this song, but, darn, I really need to be in the right mood to listen to it. I'm afraid that today it's the PSD button.

The Ben Folds Five selections on RP are a travesty.  I saw on the boards that Selfless Cold and Composed was shot down in LRC, but there are so many better songs than Brick and the other two available.  Maybe the new album coming out in September will yield something RP-worthy.

It's stories like this that should give politicians pause. Having an unplanned pregnancy can force a woman to make a very tough choice either way. The women I've known who chose to have an abortion struggled with the decision and were saddened by having to face that dilemma. One friend who had an abortion was herself the result of an unplanned pregnancy and grew up watching her mother have to deal with an unhappy marriage and a thwarted life. My friend did not want to repeat her mother's life starting at age 21.

This is an intensely personal matter. A woman should have control over her body and her life choices. Reproductive choices shouldn't a political football for grandstanding idiots who just want to get elected.

Byronape, I hope time heals your friend's pain.
This sucks.
THIS song is a brick and I'm slowly drowning.

Let's face it, this song makes you feel. Wasn't that the aim of Ben's music? Hey, BFF never promised you a rose garden. Where there's sun, there's got to be some rain sometime. Feel it. The words don't particularly have meaning to me, but the mood does. I am very thankful for this song and for Ben providing an emotional experience that I would not have had. This song brings meaning to me although I do not understand. So melancholy, so perfect. I feel human again.
By far, one of the worst album covers of all time.

Yes, but if the abortion did NOT happen, who ends up raising the (unwanted) child?
99% of the time, it is the woman.  Alone. And BTW, I am a man.
What it boils down to is one thing, BIRTH CONTROL! Condems, rubbers, gloves, sheaths, diaphragms, IUD's, pills, patches, foam, sponges, etc. Hell, if you don't have any of that, don't have intercourse. There are lots of other things you can do that are just as much fun.
As for the song. Too whiny for me.

One point of view: A woman's burden in this life is the physical burden of carrying children.  The man's burden is the psychological burden of having no say in the matter if she decides not to.  Interesting reversal of situations, huh?

That's kind of the point, Bridieboo. Ben wrote this song about something that happened when he was 16. It's written from the self-centered perspective of a high school kid.

Good interpretation; yeah, it is always the guy's fault. {#Eh}

Ex-girlfriend calls out of the blue; says "I'm pregnant and I need you to take me to the clinic." If that isn't getting hit with a brick I don't know what is. I don't think the metaphor is a cut on the girl but an indication of how big a blow the news was.
I wish BF would be my BFF we could sing together forever.

Good songs, but my nominee for saddest is by Maria McKee, "My One True Love."

My One True Love lyrics

A river flows with liquid snow, but it's not for me
Birds fly high in the southern sky, but it's not for me
Cattle roam in fertile fields, but it's not for me
Flowers bloom on a lonely highway, but it's not for me

My one true love I'll never know
I keep to me
My one true love I'll never know
I came to meet the bitter way
For my one true love

Mountain's green in the summertime, but it's not for me
Lovers walk in the falling moonlight, but it's not for me
Mothers love their sons to death, but it's not for me
Salesmen feed on Christmas time, but it's not for me

My one true love I'll never know
I keep to me
My one true love I'll never know
I came to meet the bitter way
For my one true love

Fathers cry for fallen sons, but it's not for me
Good guys in the N16, but it's not for me
Zero stare at the tv screen, but it's not for me
Drifters sleep on quiet ? , but it's not for me

My one true love I'll never know
I keep to me
My one true love I'll never have
I came to meet the bitter way
For my one true love

Ben Folds always reminded me of that annoying spoiled-rotten whiny kid... you know the one.

Then I find out he's from (or at least spent a lot of time in) Chapel Hill.  Yup.  That fits. Plenty of spoiled-rotten whiny kids here.

I think it is a little unclear.  Who is speaking when he says, "Can't you see, it's not me you're dying for?"  Seems that he is more conflicted — that maybe he wanted her to keep the baby and she didn't want to.  Certainly, he takes her to the clinic and does the best he can with a tough situation, especially for what is surely a young couple (she appears to live at home, for example).  Admitting that he feels like he is drowning in the situation, and that his girlfriend is the source of that feeling is just honest.  Probably most people in that situation feel the same way— they try to do the right thing, whatever that is, they muddle through it, they have horrible, conflicted feelings.

How should they feel?  The girl has a whole host of feelings that probably are similar, although coming from a completely different prespective about the situation.  That Ben Folds wisely doesn't presume to know how the woman feels only adds to the power of the song.

The most moving line for me is the part about being alone while sitting togther, and the realization that they are on their own.

It's good to know I'm not the only one who feels a little uncomfortable with the perspective of the song. And you're right about his honesty. As a songwriter, I can certainly respect it. It gets a rise out of me, which is pretty powerful in and of itself. It takes something special to admit in a song that you are kind of a dick, and then, actually get sympathy for it.

Oh, definitely. They're real men, but now they're broke. The snippage costs about $50 with health insurance. Reversal? Thousands, easy.
The financial/emotional costs of the trophy wife who pressured the poor bastard into the reversal 'so I can have my baby', (who he'll probably also divorce anyway)? Millions. Adopt, putz, adopt!
