There's the moon asking to stay
Long enough for the clouds to fly me away
Well it's my time coming
I'm not afraid to die
My fading voice sings of love
But she cries to the clicking of time
Of time

Wait in the fire
Wait in the fire

And she weeps on my arm
Walking to the bright lights in sorrow
Oh drink a bit of wine we both might go tomorrow
Oh my love
And the rain is falling and I believe
My time has come
It reminds me of the pain
I might leave
Leave behind

Wait in the fire
Wait in the fire

(It reminds me of the pain
I might leave
Leave behind)

And I feel them drown my name
So easy to know and forget with this kiss
I'm not afraid to go but it goes so slow

Wait in the fire
Wait in the fire
Wait in the fire
Wait in the fire
Wait in the fire
Wait in the fire
Wait in the fire
Wait in the fire

I can definitely see why some people might find his voice (especially later in this song) shrill and less-than-appealing, but I am in complete AWE of his skill & talent. While I've never graduated beyond going to open-mike nights, I've prided myself on my vocal range. Jeff Buckley is the unattainable goal for me, the ability to hit & hold any note he wanted, with vibrato, with power, for however long was appropriate. His fearlessness, his unquenchable musical curiosity, his solid songwriting and guitar ability - it is a crying shame that he never had the chance to realize the depth & breadth of his gifts.

i was always in awe of him, too. and i adore this song. the whole album, really.

Absolutely awful.  Thank goodness it (eventually) ends...
Oh my god...what the *^%& was that?

music with yelling.
Wow. Polarizing. Funny how the trashy comments abound, though. {#No}

This song just gets worse as it goes along.
this song means so much to me.
Well, I don't know about the yells but I'm thinking yes. Takes a lot of oomphf to pull that off, and I think he's done it.

His version of Hallelujah on this album is sublime. But this song doesn't seem to ring the bell of very many listeners.
A wailing banshee there at the end. Yikes!
If his voice wasn't trying so hard, this would be seriously cool. The music is stunning. He is considerably less so.
Still stunning. edit: Also prescient? "and the rain is falling and i believe my time has come it reminds me of the pain i might leave leave behind wait in the fire... and i feel them drown my name so easy to know and forget with this kiss i'm not afraid to go but it goes so slow"
not his best by far...
Crankin' it up on this Friday Night. It suits my mood.
Needs to go to 11.
Love that Rating Curve. The sign of great music. =)

Love the "atmospheric" lush chords in this one. But, Jeff certainly sounds anguished. Is that why he died?
As some have pointed out, he seemed to have a problem with "restraint," and was known for impulsive acts. Like jumping into the Wolf River for a night swim at near-flood stage. That is how he died, and an incredible talent was lost. I think the "unrestrained" vocal may be his experimentation with sufi singing (some of the musically-educated will have to weigh in on that). But from what I've read and heard from folks who were in NYC when he was playing there, he was quite a character with a great deal of intensity. Read Dream Brother for an interesting story of both him and his father.

Nothing worse than a singer who... Almost... But not quite... Gives his all to a song... (When it's required).
BEGINNING TO HURT.
thank you - my ears were about to fall off

C'mon people, it was his first and only full length album released while he was alive. He didn't have the opportunity to obtain the discipline that comes with age and experience.
Oh Lord... Wow! Thanks for NOT playing "Hallelujah"! What a truly staggering album! R.I.P.

I feel like Jeff Buckley had that condition that some very gifted singers have - because he CAN do so much, he DOES ... all the time. This song is most definitely evidence of that. His voice really was a remarkable instrument. I personally would find his music more enjoyable if he were to apply a little more restraint in his choices.

Guess there's no middle road regarding the late Mr. Buckley. For my money, both he and his late father were sheer genius. To each his/her own...
Agreed. I think this song is sheer brilliance.
I do not hate this. However, I have always felt that Jeff Buckley's singing style lacks the discipline characteristic of a truly top notch vocalist. This does not mean that he 'sucks' or that those who like him are ignorant. It is clear hat he had a good voice, but it wandered all over the place. This aspect does grate on me.

Other than when I've had to answer the phone, this is the first time I've felt compelled to turn the volume down on RP.

Awful!
Ugh!
A bit over-ripe.
Hope he didn't hurt himself with that high note!
Excellent emotional track
Yes! Buckley rules!
Great song. Really shows what JB was up to. And the great backing vocal bridge in the middle still gives me goose-bumps.
yuck

Surprising to see so many negative comments, given that more than 3 times as many people rate it 8 or above. Those that love it must be happy to just sit back and enjoy a jewel.
Shame this wasn't played last Tuesday (The Day of Silence) instead of spoiling my Saturday.
All his songs make me think what a trememdous loss the musical community has suffered. Way ahead of his time.
Well, personally it remains in my top 10 albums of all time list. I actually try & limit my listens though - to keep it fresh!

I just have no idea how to rate that. (Although it's not looking to good for Jeff right now)

I'm with you Kermit. Oh God ... the wailing. And I own this album.
Still Godlike!!! This song is a crude proof of his genious... some raw stuff sounding just like a masterpiece! THANKS, RP!

That was a great segue from Dave Matthews. And as Allan said, "The best part about it was that Dave Matthews was ending."

Polarized reviews are one of the key things I look for when browsing the web for new music and movies. It generally indicates that the brain needs to do some work on the subject matter, which is quite annoying to some. Annoyingly Good one might say. ;)

Are ya' kiddin' me with the lyrics to this song? There's the moon asking to stay Long enough for the clouds to fly me away Well it's my time coming, i'm not afraid to die Oh drink a bit of wine we both might go tomorrow Oh my love And the rain is falling and i believe My time has come It reminds me of the pain I might leave Leave behind Damn that's eerie. I've had this as 7 for a while. I just don't get into the whole j buckley craze, and so many do, so I've heard the song and the whole disc so so often. But this is a good song. Okay, 8.
i cant decide if i like this or hate it .. yet.
Awwwwww, man, this song is still playin'??!!!! Yikes!
I hear a bit of Mars Volta.
So this is my least favorite track off this otherwise fabulous CD. But it's growing on me...upgraded to a 6 today. We might make 7 someday, although I probably won't go higher than that. A gal has to have her standards, you know. Edit: Ew, we just got to the end with the tortured wailing and such...I might have spoken too soon. I'll let it keep the 6. For now.
How could so many people hate this so much? That just makes me very, very, very sad... :(
Brutal.
This must be one of the most polarizing songs in the RP playlist...
STILL SUUUUUUUCKS!
Have you heard of the band OURS? That's what this sounds a lot like. Not bad in my opinion...one hell of a voice. Makes me want to break out my old copy of Distorted Lullabyes
Awwww ya ruined it!

I heard that Jeff was definitely an influnece of Radiohead's - a good thing in my opinion
I used to detest this until my son bought the CD. Now that I am familiar with it I have to say that this, and much of Buckley's music, is pure genius.
Did this bimbo finally give birth to whatever he was pregnant with? This really sucks!
My absolute favorite artist. It gets no better as far as I'm concerned. Brilliant.

Grace is really one of my all-time favorite albums, I can listen to it again and again and it never seems to bore, although I must admit that I didn't care for it the first few times I listened to it.
I think I experienced that too. Maybe the soaring intensity interferes too much with the brain's original processing of the tune the first few times hearing it.
so that's where the singer for the mars volta got his inspiration!
What a wonderful combination of darkness and beauty! Buckley rocked!
