Long distance runner, what you standin there for?
Get up, get out, get out of the door
Your playin cold music on the barroom floor
Drowned in your laughter and dead to the core.
There's a dragon with matches that's loose on the town
Takes a whole pail of water just to cool him down.

Fire! fire on the mountain!

Almost ablaze still you don't feel the heat
It takes all you got just to stay on the beat.
You say it's a livin, we all gotta eat
But you're here alone, there's no one to compete.
If mercys a busness, I wish it for you
More than just ashes when your dreams come true.

Fire! fire on the mountain!

Long distance runner, what you holdin out for?
Caught in slow motion in a dash for the door.
The flame from your stage has now spread to the floor
You gave all you had. why you wanna give more?
The more that you give, the more it will take
To the thin line beyond which you really can't fake.

Fire! fire on the mountain!

Since we (deadheads, that is) are accustomed to hearing 20-30 minute versions of this song, perhaps following the Neville Brothers version with one of the shorter Dead versions would be an interesting medley.  Hell, make it a long version.  There is nothing like some of Donna's caterwauling to wake one up in the morning.
A great Dead song, my favorite actually. Cool rendition but just not the same. Needs more fire!
great cover. love those neville brothers!
Unfortunately, I find that the only redeeming aspect of this version is the sax-driven intro. As noted by others, this song lacks something, specifically fire.
Frustrating that I hear this version so much on RP, but not the original.

Me too. Its a great track. I'd like to hear a dub version. . .

edit. . . ha ha! I just did! Googled and found a band called Grateful Dub playing this very track (badly)
Really surprising Neville Brothers wouldn't have done a much better job with this - a "5".
After hearing this song so many times live by the Grateful Dead, and having seen the Neville Brothers open for the Dead for a New Year's Eve show, I have to say that I was ready to skip this with the first few measures. The NB rocked the arena with their set, which fortunately did not include this.

Ugh.

Jesus... now they are ruining songs I actually like...

Garbage

WORST VOICE...........EVER!!!!
Not being familiar with The Dead version, I'm not prejudiced against this take on the song and I'm finding it quite enjoyable.
Royal Southern Brotherhood does a great version of this song!!  Love this one too...
Fail.
Nope... don't like it.  Please play the Dead!
Just horrible when the Dead do it so much better. Please let's not hear this again.
A nice treat to hear some Neville Bros. here, even if it isn't the most inspired cover. With such a wealth of outstanding material, not sure why the NB don't get more airtime. Their cover of Steve Miller's Fly Like an Eagle is outstanding, not to mention a sea of fantastic original material dating back to their Meters days.

Thanks for this one, hope to hear some more...

Nah - the Grateful Dead did it with energy and real musicianship. Nothing against the Neville Brothers overall, but neither of those qualities is evident here.

Normally I appreciate a good dub cover, but... well, just nah.

I have to agree. This isn't horrible or anything, it's just missing something. Like a bland dish that needs some seasoning.
I like the Neville Brothers, but the Dead does this song right.  When I hear the Dead do it, I want to jump out of my chair and start dancing.  When I hear this version, I just want to sink into my chair.
Only a 5.8 rating? What a shame.

What tosh, I'll take this over the Dead any day. Bright and lively and with a great beat.
I love "rollin beats" !

Great cure for insomnia....
Goodnight

Boredom.  Boredom on the mountain.  Boredom. Boredom on the mountain. Boredom. Boredom on the mountain. Boredom. Boredom on the mountain. Boredom. Boredom on the mountain. Boredom. Boredom on the mountain. Boredom. Boredom on the mountain. Boredom. Boredom on the mountain. Boredom. Boredom on the mountain. Boredom. Boredom on the mountain. Boredom. Boredom on the mountain. Ad infinitum, ad nauseam. . .

Neville's are just soooo soulful!
Really nice version

I like this song for what it is.  The Neville Brothers' version is the only one I've heard - had no idea it was a Dead song, and now, knowing that, it doesn't matter. I still like it. I could change my mind, though - I've had a glass of wine (after a pretty brutal day at work), the sun is shining, and I have tomorrow off, so who knows what could happen between now and, oh, tomorrow?{#Roflol}

Oh - and then to follow a Dead cover with a Dead song.... Bill, you're on a roll! {#Sunny}
I just crawled out from under a rock. I don't know the Neville Brothers well, nor do I know the Dead song. But I like this music.
You should hear Ernie Williams cover this live....seriously.  Big stuff happens.

As much as I like the Nevilles, I have to agree

Seems strange when not sung by Jerry.

It's ok, not great though.

Cyril's vocals always seemed much too forced for my liking.  Love the songs with Aaron or Art taking the lead.  Aaron's boy Ivan is also very talented and is the 5th Neville on stage.

I like it when the Dead does it! But this is really interesting too.
At a radio station in Vail, CO, we used to get LOTS of requests for this song...only by The Grateful Dead.
Nice.  I get to see the Neville Brothers on Wednesday.  Hopefully they play this one!{#Bananajam}

Not that I am a huge Dona fan, but I just cant listen to this particular song without her crazy wailing in the background... go figure.

What an awesome cover of one amazing artist by another!!  Perfect song for a HOT HOT Friday in the PacNW...92 degrees and climbing..
That was one hot set!

I didn't realize the significance of this "fire" set:

"9:09 am - Neville Brothers - Fire On The Mountain
"9:03 am - Doves - Walk In Fire
"9:00 am - Sam Phillips - Fighting With Fire
"8:57 am - Sebadoh - On Fire
"8:54 am - Pixies - Dig For Fire"

until I looked at the Radio Paradise home page, where it says

"Thank you, firefighters!

"As you might have heard, we have a very serious fire situation here in Paradise, CA. Over 10,000 people have been evacuated from the lower third of the town. Fortunately for us, we live in the area furthest away from the fire and are quite likely going to be just fine, but the situation really makes us appreciate the hard work and dedication of our firefighters. Without them, a bad situation would be much, much worse.

"We'll be keeping a close eye on the fire status, and are ready to leave if we need to. Thanks for all of the kind words and positive thoughts."

Thanks for heroically keeping the music flowing, Bill and Rebecca.

Sweet!
And our latest fire slowly burns out - thank you FOG! (I never thought I'd say that)

Leave this song to Jerry. That means you too, Bob and Phil.
:frustrated: :frustrated: Speed the tempo up!!! I would tell you that this is a shitty cover song, but I just want this song to be over!!! I love the Nevilles, but this song is crap. :puke:
This is the apotheosis of Ho-Hum
Okay, but drags too much for my taste - how about some "Congo Square" instead?
This is cool. I got into the Neville Brothers because I heard the Dead do "Hey Pocky Way" in a show at Stanford. This completes the circle.
trifecta of mountain songs! cool RP!
Holy cripes this song is dragging. I love the Dead version, but this is unending.
I've always wondered if Dead songs would sound good if played coherently. Apparently not.
This is one of the very few Dead tunes that I find to be much better than ho-hum. In fact, I like this one quite a lot . . . when, that is, it's a Dead tune. . . .
I love the Neville Bros., but this does not hold a candle to the Dead. Sorry. I am sure that this song (as performed by the Nevilles) would be great in concert, so long as they sped up the tempo a bit.
:bounce: :sunny.gif: :bounce:
Long live the Neville Brothers and ALL New Orleans' sound!! <-o<

Yeah... but first I need a large glass of cuban rum!!!
Wow. I have never heard this before. My first instinct is to agree with Leslie, but I think I have to hear it more in order to form an opinion. ;)
Ho Hum
I love the original and this ain\'t half bad either. I really like the arrangement, I think the horns work really well.
Makes me wanna fall asleep on the beach. Sounds like a beach song.
Not bad but I prefer the Dead\'s version.
I like the Neville Brothers but I love Cyril Neville & The Uptown All-Stars. It would be great to hear some of The All-Stars here.
