She's waiting for me when I get home from work
But things just ain't the same
She turns out the light and cries in the dark
Won't answer when I call her name

On the stairs, I smoke a cigarette alone
The Mexican kids are shooting fireworks below
Hey, baby, it's the Fourth of July
Hey, baby, it's the Fourth of July

She's waiting for me when I get home from work
But things just ain't the same
She turns out the light and cries in the dark
Won't answer when I call her name

She gives me her cheek when I want her lips
And I don't have the strength to go
On the lost side of town, in a dark apartment
We gave up trying so long ago

On the stairs, I smoke a cigarette alone
The Mexican kids are shooting fireworks below
Hey, baby, it's the Fourth of July
Hey, baby, it's the Fourth of July

Whatever happened, I apologize
So dry your tears, and baby, walk outside
It's the Fourth of July

Still trying to see if I can do a worse job at songwriting.....nope sorry. This wins.

Do share.
Maybe it's an LA thing but here we love our Dave, Phil too. Everyday's the 4th of July, keep rockin Dave.

Welcome to amateur night. Corny with a strained weak vocal.

Sorry, can't make it....I'm busy listening to Dave Alvin.

It happens to be the 5th of September rather than the 4th of July but this is still a good Dave Alvin song. He writes some great, diverse music and also puts on a rockin' live show. Keep it coming Bill. Yee haa.{#Cowboy}
This song should only be played once a year.
This is not a good song...please don't play it again
Everybody in my trailer park strongly dislikes this country drivel.

What is this "hick" crap!  This radio station so rarely plays country music, but when it does, it sticks out like a sore thumb.  Boooooo.

Dave Alvin is hardly "hick crap" as you so crassly refer to it. Neither is this song. The version by X may be better, but the song is still a killer.

I'd have to agree with that. I think John Doe has a terrific voice.

Love that Hammond B3 solo. Love hearing Dave, any ol' time.

Dave does a fine job on this by himself, but I think the definitive version is the one he did when he was the guitarist for X.

Great song, in any event. Good times! Happy Birthday, America! {#Clap}

Hey, you should play this one soon. It's almost the 4th.
Even in November it'd be a great pick. I'm getting to be big Dave Alvin fan.
