In case the apostrophe police are feeling distressed, the title of the song is actually "Soldiers of Joy."
Wow, a combination of an old-timey standard (Soldiers Joy -- a song you're quite likely to hear at a contra dance or old-timey jam) with... um... Zimbabwean music? I'm guessing that because one of the words I heard in there was "skokiana", which is the name of an old Zimbabwean standard that's common to hear from marimba bands. Anyway, to sum up: cool! Yay for multi-folk fusion!
:)
Strange stuff.. Like it! :D

Joe Craven is a fabulous performer and musician! We saw him in several performances at Wintergrass in Tacoma, WA in February and thought he stole the show!
Joe Craven could stand off to the side of the stage and steal the show. He is one of the most versatile and talented musicians I have ever encountered. He can make music with ANYTHING! I once saw him jam out on a 36 inch wok in our kitchen at Rockygrass.
FUN!
It took me a moment to place this, but I recognise it from a track by Michelle Shocked (on Arkansas Traveller), which is one of my favourites by her. I enjoyed this version too -- a very different interpretation.

He is a great talent but sometimes his production is a little too synthetic for me. I saw him play with the David Grisman quintet. It was fabulous.
Nice pickin'.
If RP is going to play this genre (and I think in moderation RP absolutely should) RP should at least play from the best of the best and get some Natalie MacMaster on the playlist.
Look, maww! That feller kin play a fiddle extry good! :-({|=
Fun! Happy music! (regardless of what the lyrics say...)
One of the nicer drug and death songs. \:D/
I never heard this before, but its great!!!! I really like it. :jump:

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be on my way to the world music record store. :motor:
No need -- Joe's a down-homeboy. But pick up the album, definitely. A lot of virtuoso stringed-instrument-pluckin, in a variety of musical genres. This is one of the more "worldly"-er.

This is pretty much exactly the combination kind of high pitched guitar with prominent (fretless?) bass that I've been looking for ever since Paul Simon's "Graceland" album. :D/ So far, I haven't found very much. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be on my way to the world music record store. :motor:
...with my "thumb" out, I like it too. I'll pay for the gas;-)

No variation. Quite repetative.
what a cool-wierd island touch to what was originally an old-time fiddle number... me likes! you should follow this with guy clark's version...that would be neat...
When I heard this song I thought to my self :stupid: where have I been all this time (1996) and not heard of Joe Craven before? Answer: Wasn't listening to RP then. Sure glad I changed my behavours in 2003!!! Hope he comes to Victoria, B.C Canada. Just thought he might have come and gone, ugh!! Thanks again for the listening enjoyment :nodhead:
Hey -- where did my post from last week go for this song? GRRRR......... ANYWAY, I had said that I'm thrilled to hear Joe Craven on RP! He's one of the most talented musicians I've ever had the privilege of hearing -- and you need to see him live to really appreciate this. I've seen him at least 3 times with the Dave Grisman Quintet, and he stands out among this incredibly talented crew (which is saying a lot!) More Joe Craven!!!
I am my Mother's darling boy...
