I've always referred to their stuff as "comfortable music". I bought "Primitive Streak" sight unseen (sound unheard?), yet listening to it I felt like I'd known it all my life.

Saw these guys live back in the mid 90s and they can really cook. Got to hang out with them at the bar for awhile after the show, and they all signed my Annunciation and debut CD jackets. Great bunch of guys. Glad they're back together again.

I'd have to agree: Annunciation is simply one of the best albums I've ever heard. The subdudes have a new cd coming out on 1/24 title Behind the Levee. Not exactly. The percussionist, Steve Amedee, has perhaps the most unique drumming style you will ever see. He includes a tamborine in his method, but also has some more conventional equipment as well. Very minimalist though. Around 1996 the original band did a farewell tour, tired of ten years on the road and in hopes of pursuing individual projects. A few years later 3 of the 4 got back together (all but the bassist Allen - IMHO the least critical to the subdudues sound) and toured briefly as "The Dudes," although it was clearly the subdudes music. {Historical backdrop: This is around the time that the Grateful Dead sans Jerry set the fashion by playing as "The Other Ones."} Some change of heart took place and in 2002 the band reemerged as the subdudes once again, with 2 new members recruited from their old New Orleans circles to replace Allen. peaches wrote:

Wow!! That sounds incredible. I saw them at a free outdoor concert with Robert Cray and Shawn Colvin. Robert was good, Shawn was boring (surprise, surprise) and the Subdudes were fantastic. I had heard they broke up but have since gotten back together. They are very good live.

For about a year I worked at this Cajun restaurant where the owner really liked these guys. This CD really grew on me while I was working there, although anytime I hear anything by them I start craving gumbo...

I resent this...not because you don't like, but because the implication is that this is country. I could be wrong, but this sounds very much like Southern Louisiana music (either New Orleans or Lafayette). But definitely not a country song, IMO.

I first saw this band at an old Texas dance hall called Cibolo Creek Country Club. I was spellbound. It was one of the most exciting performances I have ever seen. Six months later they returned to even bigger crowds In Austin and San Antonio. Then they were ignored by their major record label and received no promotion for their new CD. They disbanded. What a downer! Tommy Malone has tried to make a come-back. His first effort was a New Orleans band called Tiny Town. His second effort is the Tommy Malone band. These are OK efforts but they pale in comparison to the Subdudes magic sound.
