You've been a fighter for how many years?
The matches & the patches, the boos & the cheers
Now they want an answer, no time to reminisce
You've taken home some prizes, but nothin quite like this

It'd be so easy
It'd be so easy
It'd be so easy
Easy as fallin down

Look at this world & what it's comin to
Look at all these people what have they done for you?
Another chance may never come around
So go on -- take the money & just get out of town

It'd be so easy
It'd be so easy
It'd be so easy
Easy as fallin down

Your comment is just plain disrespectful...and awful, too!
That harmonica is god awful.

I find the whole album worthwhile, including "The future's so bright".

Timbuk 3, twice in two days. And different songs. I like that.

What a beautiful song.  It's perfect post-party wind down or raining Sunday morning mood setter.  Along with Talking Heads Naive Melody.
Good choice Bill!
Is there a revival of some sort for Timbuk 3? Two songs in the past two days. I haven't heard from them since the "Shades" tune just mentioned. Weird.
I think this band should be remembered for this song — moreso than The Future's So Bright (I Have To Wear Shades) ...  although that is a cool title for a song...

What a great song - I have not heard this in forever.

Could be the most irritating harmonica part I've ever heard. Work it back in the mix Mr. Sound Engineer dude!
Timbuk3 has a new website and will be releasing product in 2009. www.timbuk3music.net

pat mAcdonald is alive, well and still records and tours. He continues to be one of the great under-appreciated American songwriters and performers. www.patmacmusic.com

Maybe, once Neko gets some singing lessons, learns subtlety and can carry a tune.

When I was in college they busked on Sixth Street. About two steps away from homeless. They started out with a boombox playing taped drumbeats; the midi was a big step up once they made a little money. Not many folks rise up from the streets: it takes guts, and usually (but not always, Britney) talent. 'Future's So Bright' may seem annoying, but at the time we were gripped by Reagan's 'trickledown' policies. Which seem positively benevolent compared to today's economic climate. Like Bobby McFerrin's 'Don't Worry, Be Happy', 'Future' was actually cynical and bleak. Musically, not everyone's cuppa tea though. c.
Her voice sounds familiar.
These guys put on a great show on Austin City Limits back in the mid 90's only a handful good songs on that cd

i belive it's actually called a "hooter" i kid you not.. remember the band the hooters. they used it extensively in their music. ive allways liked this band, but my favorite song would have to be "sunshine in dangerous", the acoustic version off of "looks like dark to me.

If you doubt the talent behind Timbuk 3, you should check out Pat MacDonald's 'Sleeps With His Guitar'. Pat was the driving force behind this husband and wife duo, and is quite the musical and lyrical genious.
Thanks, I will. Always wondered what happened to these two.

Got it. Still didn't like it, not even secretly, not even the first few times, and I'd be happy to admit it if I did. This, however, is actually quite nice.

Hmmm. Let's see. A catchy tune and really nice harmony. That MUST be why so many people loathe this song.

In a weird way the name of the band actually can indicate whether or not their music might be any good. It seems to me that a good creative band name would indicate that the band itself is good and creative. If a band likes cute plays on words and names their band Timbuk 3 they might come up with a dopey song playing on words like 'The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades' Some band names are pretentious, others just dumb and some really cool and I think often the music follows suit. If they aren't creative enough to come up with a decent name, they usually can't create decent music. It occasionally happens but not too often.
I tend to agree with you for the most part. Some people think Garbage shot themselves in the foot with their name. "Who's going to give a Grammy to Garbage?"
I like this disk. These folks rock!
Muzak with a very thin veneer of something better.

I'm amazed how many negative posts these guys got. I quite like them. In fact, this has long been one of my favorite albums.

Saw them? whew.. I saw them in... 1983? Where'd I put that Google... I still love 'em. hiho

Timbuk 2 + 1? Please! How about Descent - 1 = Acceptable.

I agree. I have always loved pretty much everything Timbuk3 did. As for the comments on dopey plays on words, I think there's nothing wrong with being poignant, emotionally evocative AND a little bit humorous. Good pick RP!
I JUST noticed that this is Timbuk 3. I like it, have liked it every other time I heard it on RP.
This song brings back memories of band camp in Calgary in 1988. *sigh*. Great Band, Great Song!

Worst band name ever...
Worse than 'Tears For Fears'?? Worse than 'Loverboy'??
how about doing something radical, like actually listening to the music before deciding if a group is any good

Not far from Mojave 3 either...
I see I've posted a ton on this song, both about this particular cut and Timbuk 3 in general. Well, in general, they are sublimely talented --- this is simple, evocative, dark and beautiful. A sadly underappreciated group.
I love this whole album. Strongly recommend it. I never even realized that they did "Gotta wear shades". When I found that out, I was dumbfounded. It's nowhere near the quality of the stuff on Eden Alley.. So they became a one-hit wonder with one of their worst songs.. go fig. -Kysh

Yup. "The Future's So Bright" is right up there with Springsteen's "Born in the USA" and Bobby Mcferin's "Don't Worry, Be Happy" as the most ironically misunderstood songs of all time. That always makes me chuckle. hehehe (See? There I go again :D )
I would have gave it a 9 if they would just stop ruining it with all that singing.
Excellent smoky chaser after that saccharine effort by Belle and Sebastian that preceeded this tonight. This is really great disc that rewards repeated listenings.
I'd love to hear Reverend Jack and His Roamin' Cadillac Church, from Eden Alley.

A band's name dictates your response? Uh, how about doing something radical, like actually listening to the music before deciding if a group is any good. It's a big step, but I know you can do it! Forget the name, and get past "The Future's So Bright" (which everyone secretly liked, at least the first few times they heard it, because it's catchy, damn it!, even if they won't admit it ---- and it is, of course, wickedly satirical. Or didn't you get it?) and listen to more from Timbuk3. This album in particular is very good. And did I mention that this is an excellent track from a seriously under-appreciated band? Oh good, I already did. (Wow, what a pissy mood I must be in tonight! Stupid latenightstomeetdeadlines make me grumpy!)
An excellent track from a seriously under-appreciated band.
RP has this song listed as a single. It very well may have been released as a single, however I know it as the 2nd track from their all-time BEST album, "Eden Alley". I'll upload a couple tracks for RP's consideration...
I ... like this? Hrm. Had to override my natural inclination to disregard a band with such a stupid name.
Worst band name ever...

Don't most people use reverb to enhance a rather mediocre voice? Barbara has a really good voice though, but yes, they did put enough reverb on these vocals.

First reaction: \"They recorded other songs?!\"
It\'s great to hear Timbuk 3 again. I really enjoyed their album \"A Hundered Lovers\" which came out in about 1995 I think.
