It's been a long time since I rock-and-rolled
It's been a long time since I did 'The Stroll'
Ooh, let me get back, let me get back, let me get back
Mm-baby, where I come from
It's been a long time, been a long time
Been a long, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time
Yes, it has

It's been a long time since 'The Book of Love'
I can't count the tears of a life with no love
A-carry me back, carry me back, carry me back
Mm-baby, where I come from, whoa-whoa, whoa-oh-oh-hoh
It's been a long time, been a long time
Been a long, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time
Ah, ah-ah, ah-ah

Hoh, it seems so long since we 'walked in the moonlight'
Makin' vows that just couldn't work right
Haw-haw, yeah, open your arms, open your arms, open your arms
Baby, let my love come running in, a-yeah
It's been a long time, been a long time
Been a long, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time

Yeah, hey, yeah, hey, yeah, hey, yeah, hey
Ooh, yeah, ooh-ooh, yeah, ooh-ooh, yeah, ooh-ooh, yeah
It's been a long time, been a long time
Been a long, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time

Well, wtf then, I suppose we ARE in really big trouble.  Because this IS rock and roll, as much as the Stones, Who, Chuck Berry or Pearl Jam.  A mystery as to what YOU consider REAL rock and roll.

Chapeau!
I love the Jerry Lee Lewis with Jimmy Page version of this!!
If benign aliens from another galaxy showed up and wanted nothing more than
to learn about the various aspects of the human species ... and there could be only one example for each part of us that we'd provide ... THIS song ... for music of the past 100 years.  It's not the greatest or the best, but it is the most definitive.

I was there at that show too!! Great!!
Excellent!!! and Iconic!!!
Rock and Roll. The song defines the genre. This is R&R pure. I don't care how Manny times you heard this overplayed in the 70's this can only be a 10.
Right into my veins.

I agree, the LZ catalog is so rich and amazing, and this doesn't do it for me.  BUT, I think that may be due to the fact that classic rock radio has KILLED this song (and Stairway, Blackdog) with their constant overplaying.   I swear that your average stupid Clear Channel rock station must play this song every 75 minutes.   Growing up in the 1980s, this song was overplayed, and that may have killed it for me.

Yeah, but honestly, trust me, this is VASTLY more listenable on an unwanted regular basis than Bennie and the Jets, Piano Man, Rocket Man, Losing My Religion or any of a shitload of other marginally good tracks that were fully shredded corpses after 6,477 brain-dead bore-o-matic roboreplay programming bullets.

Cadillac kind of ruined this one for me. Although it wasn't one of my favorite Zep songs to begin with, I like it even less after the over-play of the Caddy ads. But still, anything from Zep deserves an 8 or higher... except for Stairway to Heaven. Probs my least fave tune of theirs. I'm sure many disagree but that's my take.

BTW: The folding cover is great too, in some way melancholic, showing transience. Not usual for a rock'n'roll band I think.

I guess you aren't in the US or don't have a TV. For four years Cadillac used it in their ads and did more damage than classic rock IMO. (Yeah, I looked up the length of the campaign because it seemed longer than four years and they quit nearly ten years ago... yet the damage is done to this otherwise godlike track.)

Catholic school, drunk parents, Nash Ramblers, involuntary virginity, etc...probably created the majority of people who love rock 'n' roll (as well as those who have created it), and also constitute a much greater percentage of the population than 2.1%. Some people are probably just tired of hearing this tune and their vote reflects their disdain - I am not among those people.

Appropriate that rating this song with an 8 will bring down its average.

Big props to Little Richard. Very (always) nice to hear some LZ. 9

This really sticks out after hearing so many mellow singer songwriter types.

Now...this is freakin RnR for a Wednesday morning!!!

30+ years later and today's so called RnR bands can't come close to this. What happened?
Radio Paradise, you so rock! Thanks for throwing in some Zeppelin - made my day! (Your songs this afternoon have been particularly fab, by the way)

Never gets old. I've commented on some songs on RP that I have heard 10,000 times in my life and enough is enough. I've heard this more than that and it will never get old! Bring on another 10,000!
I like to drive really fast when this song is on!!  {#Dance}
A lesson in drumming.
This is a classic! There's a really awesome version of it with Dave Grohl on Drums, and Taylor Hawkins on vocal - and then of course John Paul Jones on bass and Jimmy Page on guitar!!! It's on Youtube for the curious.

Personally I think it's great that they haven't done the gigantic "reunion" tour.
The 2 tours that Page/Plant did (in the 90s?) were great but now I think they're both just too old to be grinding out the Zep catalogue.
2 shrivelled grey-haired senior citizens singing about "every inch of my love" is just a tad creepy.

song reminds me of Cadillac for some reason
I agree with some of the other posters. I grew up liking this song, this song deserves an 8 at least with regards to it's out and out rocking and rolling vibe, but I have heard this song probably 1000+ times over the course of my life, and there are at least 30 other Zep songs I'd rather hear right now, so I'm just not going to give it a rating.

But I still listened to it.
Yaahh

It's been a long time since I rocked and rolled.  (That is untrue.)

This was the one and only song LZ played at a Tampa Stadium concert in 1977.  It was pouring down rain like it does only on Florida's Gulf Coast, and the boys feared electrocution.  All I know is that I was pretty much all alone, dancing soaked and shirtless on the top row of the stadium, completely transported.

They were so good, and that song was so perfect, that I'm satisfied I got my money's worth for that concert.

The drum intro was ripped lock stock and barrel from Little Richard though. I guess if you're going to be "influenced" by someone on a song called Rock and Roll, Little Richard would be the guy.  Maybe Jerry Lee
