Tonight I feel so weak
But all in love is fair
I turn the other cheek
And I feel the slap and the sting
Of the foul night air
And I know
You're only human
And I haven't got
Talking room
But tonight while I'm making excuses
Some other woman
Is making love to you

Somebody bring me some water
Can't you see I'm burning alive?
Can't you see my baby's
Got another lover?
I don't know how I'm gonna survive
Somebody bring me some water
Can't you se it's out of control?
Baby's got my heart
And my baby's got my mind
But tonight the sweet Devil
Sweet Devil's got my soul

When will this aching pass?
When will this night be through?
I want to hear the breaking glass
I only feel the steel
Of the red hot truth
And I'd do anything
To get it out of my mind
I need some insanity
Of that temporary kind
Tell me how will I ever be the same
When I know that woman
Is whispering your name

Somebody bring me some water
Can't you see I'm burning alive?
Can't you see my baby's
Got another lover?
And I don't know how I'm gonna survive
Somebody bring me some water
Can't you se it's out of control?
Baby's got my heart
And my baby's got my mind
But tonight the sweet Devil
Sweet Devil's got my soul

Oh... Devil's got my soul

Somebody bring me some water
Can't you see I'm burning alive?
Can't you see my baby's
Got another lover?
And I don't know how I'm gonna survive
Somebody bring me some water
Can't you se it's out of control?
Baby's got my heart
And my baby's got my mind
But tonight the sweet Devil
Sweet Devil's got my soul

Oh, no
Oh...
Baby's got my heart
My baby's got my mind
But tonight the sweet Devil
Sweet Devil's got my soul

A fine song to catapult one back to an era that is likely best forgotten. Her voice hurts my ears, from the earlobes all the way through the medial geniculate right to the primary auditory cortex!
Killer duet version.  Joan's feral, gravely, snarly voice is the perfect foil for Melissa.

SOMEBODY GET HER SOME GODDAMN WATER ALREADY!!!
This song reminds me why i love listening to Melissa, wish she and brandi would do a duet
Great to hear this again
I loved this song when it first came out. There was clearly passion baked into every square inch of it -- she was definitely not phoning this one in. It still rocks.
33 comments for Melissa. Criminal! Live [and sing] forever darling!
More Melissa, please.
Melissa still gives me goosebumps every time I hear her sing this song even 30 years since the first listen.  First time I have heard RP play this song even though I rated it a long time ago.
Gotta love her. Melissa is so full of life.

Dan Rather's 'The Big Interview' with her is well worth your while. Available on AXS TV.
Wow, no comments for 14 years? Of course this was on my running playlist! Great song and terrific album.
Does Bill have Jadeawoo on his mind? I like Melissa... she rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Somebody bring me a shot & a mic. She's got fire... she'd walk across fire... she's burning alive.
Takes me back to that night in West Hollywood at the Whisky Go Go in 1989(?). She was so raw and powerful live. Loved that debut cd!
Good, but makes me want to hear Like the Way I Do. Now that totally rocks!
Raw, gutsy song, from out of heart, soul, sweat, fire, pleasure and pain. Great earthy song that predates Sheryl Crow's great self-titled CD.
Ha ha, great follow-up to "Lack of Water".
Is this water therapy hour at RP? Why Store-Lack of Water and now this....

Weak top-40 drivel. <-(
I always look at popular songs a little differently when I hear them here. It helps when you haven't heard it for some time, and I haven't heard this one for many years. I think it fits here and I wonder if our friend above would feel the same if he heard it here first.
Sounds like 'Never the Bride' - who I liked. DK

Another BIG Melissa Fan...yes, the Grammy's performance was TREMENDOUS! Haven't ever seen or heard a bad one from her though...beatlechick wrote:
Count me a ME fan!! Great voice and presence. Loved it on the Grammys this year when she and Joss Stone did their Janis Joplin tribute. Was damn near as good as Janis herself!! Melissa really rocked even though she was still quite weak after the chemo treatments. The lady has so much soul and can really belt it!!

Evidently, no Melissa fans here, so I'm in the minority. I love the power in her voice and the passion in her songs. This song never fails to rock me!
On the contrary, I'm a HUGE Melissa fan. Her first few albums were incredibly powerful. She has so much energy and can emote everything from anger to despair to joy, often in the same song. Her newest albums are kind of retreads, so I'm a little disappointed there, but the early stuff can't be beat.

Don't think I've heard that, though that woulda been a really awesome concert I'd imagine...Melissa on her own is great, and I'd LOVE to see Joan Osborne live sometime if she'd tour again...one day

Not that interested in ME in general, but I've always loved this tune.
This is her best tune, if it matters.
Oh yeah! I LOVE the live version she did with Joan Osborne. *rocks out*
good grief!
No thanks

I remember confusing her for Tina Turner when this came out.
I'm confused now!
In the short lived VH1 "Duets" series, Melissa sang this with Joan Osborne. That's the definitive version of the song for me, largely because I love Joan. (Apropos of absolutely nothing, my favorite episode of duets was when they put Bryan Adams with the Brian Setzer Orchestra at the height of BSO's popularity. Everyone involved just looked so...confused. Did anyone else see that?)
Wow, obviously no Melissa fans here. I'm not a fan of all her music but I think this is one of her standout tunes.
I remember confusing her for Tina Turner when this came out. Retro-good/Summertime. An 8.
Never really liked Melissa, but she has one of the best backup bands in the business.
Back in the day when my mother had a band, she sang this song better =P
