I agree.  If you look at a vinyl pressing of the album, you'll notice that the grooves run in as close as possible to the label.  Normally, this is a sign of a long running time requiring the use of as much space as possible, to get everything on.  In the case of Led Zep 1 (about 20 minutes each side), it's apparently because Jimmy Page insisted on using all the space available, in order to optimise the sound quality (and volume, I'm guessing :))
IMHO all zep songs would be a 9 or above

Actually, she didn't write it but she did record it in 1962.

American folk singer - Anne Bredon - composed the song "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" while she was a student at University of California, Berkeley in the late 1950s.

As the rightful composer of the song, she received a back-payment of royalties from Page and Plant.

I think it might have been nice for Pagey to do what Peter Green (Greenbaum) did once he left Peter Greens - Fleetwood Mac. Which he left as they were making far too much money and he didnt feel it was right when a lot of blues artists were flat broke... so he made sure they got their dues, something I understand is ongoing due to recent interest in his music. He tries now to just play his own arrangements (when he can be convinced to go onstage), and if he does do a blues number, which is rare, he gives the writer their dues... 
(I think taking him to court would send people broke.... also doesnt he live in Argentina these days, not sure what the courts from other countries can do in these instances....)

Ahh....I just PSD out of a Smashing Pumpkin "pain-angst-anger-despair" song, so this will wash away that bad taste. 

I was 10, so of course I love every note.  I think the song is actually good, but it and anything else in this album is too deeply imprinted in my core frame of reference to judge objectively.

LZ bandmates were in their 20s in 1969. And rock and roll was predicated on songs for horny, hormonal, frustrated, emotionally distressed (or very happy) adolescents and post-adolescents. Rock Around the Clock, She Loves You, You Really Got Me and X,000 other pre-1967 rock tunes were not primarily addressing sociopolitics or other serious topics. i got this album in 1969 and i do remember thinking that it's a good effort but they seem to be a little late to the game
there were a lot of recordings released prior to this that were better and more original
not putting Zep down

I had an interesting, but for me frustrating and baffling discussion with a younger guy who contended that Aerosmith was a better band then Led Zeppelin.  My age predisposed me to Led Zeppelin.  I am from Massachusetts but that could not skew my preference toward Aerosmith.  I am a Dead Head, seen lots and lots of bands of all ilk, including orchestras, many frequent times. Led Zeppelin is one of the few great bands and their fan base across generations evidences their excellence.

I love Led Zeppelin and this song. However...  the sound quality is showing its age compared to more modern recordings.  Still a great song but it sounds 'muddy' and possibly compressed. I would be interested in reading the opinion of a sound engineer on this...

Yes, I had written a post about that in April, 2013.  I guess it's pretty far down in the thread by now.  Anyhow, cool tune.
I haven't heard this in a very long time, but wow, is it a godlike track!  Not a bad segue to Radiohead's "Jigsaw Falling into Place."  I thought February was an off month for the rotation, but maybe it's just me taking some time away.  I wasn't hearing much from this vintage, which is part of what I love about RP.  You have your "classic" stations, and your "new classic" stations, but really nowhere that mixes up Zep and Radiohead.  Rock on!
Cracking tune, & one of the first songs i taught myself to play drums to (along with Whitesnakes' 'Don't Break My Heart Again', for what its worth) but never knew until reading the comments below that Zeps'  Babe I'm Gonna Leave You is actually a cover! Thanks peeps. Thats why i love it here.

Hmmmm...didn't know that.....and yes indeedy Led Zep did a rippin' good job of upgrading the 1950's folkie.  This is one of my all time favorite LZ tunes.....put the headphones on and spin the dial to ELEVEN!  {#Music}

People love to say that LZ and other bands from UK were R&B bands, which is no doubt true to some (varying) degree.  I hear a lot of Flamenco in this one.

Did LZ pay Anne Bredon royalties? Because they were pretty lackadaisical about that sort of things with blues artists.

Thank you for this information. I wonder to hear how much songs from the 50 s and specially folk songs the rock bands in the 70s played and they made them favorite. I did not know that. Like this Led Zep Band very much.

Used to live on the A20, not far from Brands Hatch and Death Hill. Listening to this track and the ton-up boys (yes, they were then known as that) on their way to Swanley and smelling the Castrol R was the second best way to celebrate a fine summer's evening.

Probably the best Led Zep song ever. I also reckon it sums up the end of the 60's somewhat perfectly.
