I met her once at a charitable event. I was impressed by her intelligence and the fact that she cared about so many issues and was prepared to to put the work into making a difference. A good person for sure.
I have never been a big fan of acoustic only versions of songs, I almost always prefer the in-studio recording. That said, I remember the first time I heard this song; Colvin appeared on the Canadian morning news program 'Canada AM' and sang it and it was just her with an acoustic guitar. I was blown away and needed to find the recording of the song and learn more about the artist. I bought the album as soon as I could and cheered on her Grammy victory. There are several fantastic tracks on the album.

No No No!!!! I can get this overplayed nonsense on the local soft rock station. They overplayed it when it first came out and I still haven't recovered.

I love the Few Small Repairs album - probably my favourite of hers. Fantastic from start to finish. What a talent.

Every time this song comes up, no matter how weary my poor eyeballs are from a hard day behind the screens, I feel compelled to get on here to defend this song's greatness. So there. It's great. I love it. It has staying power with every listen. Over and out.
This is horrific dreck. Sounds like a song used in advertisements for feminine hygiene products.

If you get the chance to see her live she does a really great job of reinterprering this song. Its easy to forget how dark the subject matter is, and to think it garnered so much airplay and awards. Its kind of cool when a truly subversive song does that.

As a fawning fan of SC I'll say this is not one of her best. Despite that I'm happy that she's had great success with this song. I prefer to see the artists I love have enough success so that they may continue to make the music I love. Too much success can spoil an artist, and their art however.

Also, saw Shawn Colvin in the late 90's at the MOA in Raleigh, and she was a great show, and a talented artist...
A very good song, made even better for me in that it's a pretty edgy theme, and darkly disturbing in spite of the pop sensibility. Sure it was overplayed in the day, but that doesn't detract from it's goodness. You'll recall that Hey Jude was perhaps a bit overplayed in it's time? (Not that I'm making comparisons here). Thanks Bill for playing such a great, always interesting variety.
I know I lose major cool points for proclaiming this, but I absolutely LOVE this song and crank it up every time.
Only part of that is because it reminds me of sunny days along the coast in Tampa, Florida in the summer of '97.
