Everybody has different tastes.  I gave it a TEN!!  I saw them when they toured, right after the release of this album.  excellent show!!
Bump 7 > 8. It was a college smoke some weed and (try to) dance Boston party favorite.  It think it's better as an artifact of its fun and funky fusion time but I also think it stands the test of time.

Yeah! Wayne Shorter on sax!
Wow!  RP's playlist is so very eclectic!  It even includes elevator music!  {#Roflol}
Bold. One of the most controversial jazz tunes in history. At least we know that Bill's not secretly Wynton Marsalis if he's willing to play this song. Personally a bit of a guilty pleasure. But then again I like my jazz fusion with a bit of funk.

This is better than that, but I'm not feelin' the love for Weather Report tonight. This was a big hit way back when.

Exactly, but at the end it gets worse.

{#Crashcomp}
awful. Is it 'lift music'?

Loved them in the day. This was one of their best.

Dusted this one off recently !

Try not to tap your foot. I dare yah.
aahhhh...yes. I used to be in a decent jazz band, this was one of our charts...very coo!
Lovin' the Bird!
Ah ... the Masters of "yuppie jazz" ... not my cup of tea, but I celebrate RP's variety {#Sunny}

I'm suddenly sitting in a cramped dorm room back in 1978...and IT"S A-OK!

This is awesome. The version from their live album, 8:30, is even better.

About as enjoyable as a kick in the groin or a bad joke you've heard several times (or a lame sit-com).
Holy freakin wow!

Playing Weather Report!!!  Wayne Shorter on tenor! Wow!

This was one of the premier jazz fusion bands.

This is such a delight on a Friday morning!

One of the best concerts I ever attended - out at SUNY on Long Island.  Mind blown.

Wow, a true blast from college past. Joe Zawinul and Jaco Pastorius. I wore out my LP. Or was it just that one night it my roommate used it as a coaster for the bong?

Just a seminal piece of music that forever changed the way people look at Jazz in general, and the electric guitar in particular. Nothing special. Move along.

What a truly great radio station this is!
The best effort to please all of the people all of the time I know!

What the hell is this cheese?
I spent the afternoon listening to my Jaco collection the other day as I was unpacking my office after moving. When Birdland came on I cranked up the volume. Just did it again. Jaco's bass makes this otherwise great piece of music astounding!

I agree!  This song is probably W.R.'s most commercial track but a good entree into their music. Some of the band's other music - especially with Jaco Pastorius (arguably one of the most creative bassists ever) - is especially inspired. Zawinul/Shorter were genius together.

This sucks, but then I looked at the album art and was like .. is it that bad? That cover rules.

The music itself has some pretty terrible moments. It's embarrassing; I could not play this from start to finish for a friend.  I think I may even need to leave the office...
damn, this is remarkably cheesy.

I wholeheartedly agree!!!  No hesitation voting "1" for this.

precisely!
This was my first exposure to Weather Report - oh, 20 years ago - and the first time i heard Birdland as well.  It has stuck with me as one of the best arrangements of this piece (heck of just about any music) in ages.

An 11 in my book.

And Jaco Pastorius FTW!  \o/
More Weather Report, Bill, Please!

Joe Zawinul / Weather Report made lots of great music. This song/album was after they had peaked creatively. Much too Muzak for my tastes. Something off "Mysterious Traveller" would be an improvement.

Manhattan Transfer didn't have to change a note in their version of this classic.
Belatedly, I see I am echoing another's thought.
Must be true, then.

This takes me back.  One of the best concerts I ever attended opened with John McLaughlin and Shakti (at the time, talented and worldy beyond my appreciation), followed by Weather Report (same), followed by the main act, Santana.  Carlos, of course, insisted that John McL, Jaco, and a few others from the "warm up" bands join him for an extended jam during Santana's set.  It was unusual in Cleveland Public Auditorium for the musicians to get you even higher than the other things floating around, but these guys sure did.
Sounds like (bad) TV theme music.

Dentist chair music.
Ahh, Birdland.  I played this tune so many times in high school and college jazz ensemble, I knew it by heart.  In college our director would mix it up and let people go off and do their own solos for an extended jam session.  It was a great way to break up the monotony.

Nice, but I'd like to hear some other stuff from Weather Report.
Birdland might sound a little dated now, but these cats were one of the most influential fusion jazz ensembles to come out of this era. This is a brilliant album by any standard. Nice choice Bill. You should put a fresh ear to Pat Metheny as well.
Best memory from dating Dan - he took me to this concert at SUNY on Long Island.  Amazing.
Don't really listen to RP for jazz, but this is good stuff. Wayne Shorter and Jaco are two of my all time favorite musician's, and for them to end up in the same band... wow!
For some crazy reason this hook has been stuck in my brain. For years when I am about to do something adventurous this start playing in my head. Sometimes I'll even start humming it. I lived with it so far.{#Stupid}

I'm with you.  There actually was some good music to come out of the 80's.

Wow! Haven't heard this one in decades. Sounds a little dated but not bad.
If I had a hat like the album cover photo, would I be as cool as these guys?

Jaco (yes), Joe Zawinul, and Wayne Shorter.  Oh baby, baby!

Help. I'm trapped in some early-80s sitcom.
Some quirky rom-com movie from the 80s staring Tom Hanks is about to start..right?

Gotta love it{#Cheers}
Is this the theme music for the movie "Benji"?

{#Lol} Jazz can be powerful stuff but normally this kind of upbeat music has the opposite effect. Maybe you live in a Bizzaro universe. Or were you that kid who threatened to kill himself if his blankie was taken away?
All of you need to listen to Jaco.

Hah... this is why I love Radio Paradise.

In my ears... this is HORRIBLE.

Someone just turned on The Weather Channel's 1984 Local Forecast on my Radio Paradise.  I can't find one redeeming quality to this song.

But you guys love it so... enjoy ;-)

I have always loved this whole album.

OMG Heard the intro to this and thought Weather Report? So fitting for RP

I think Bill may have seen my FB page today, I mentioned this song. Or maybe he was reading my mind: he's done it before...

Go Jaco!

Not really liking this. Sounds like some of the music from segments of the movie "Tootsie" and other films of that time period.

It's like Pop Soundtrack Jazz, if there were such a genre.

Buddy, I don't think I was being ageist; his immature attitude indicated to me that he was a spoiled child with little tolerance for music outside his comfort zone  He didn't stick around long, and with 45% of his ratings being '1' I 'm not surprised. There are scores of young people - teenagers - who are far more mature than people 3 or 4 times their age. I wasn't being ageist but you, on the other hand, implied that a grandfather is a dinosaur! That sounds like an ageist remark to me. I'm not a 'grandad' but I know several who are much hipper than many younger guys. The body does age, but age is also a state of mind, you are as old as you feel.

If only this song was as short as Amadou and Mariam and that song as long as this one...

I feel like part of me just died...

great musicianship for sure...but my gawd I am naseous and reeling!

there's a totally square stereotypical "white" dude somewhere strolling down the street with a perma-grin, wagging his pointer finger towards the sky, and shuffling his shoulders just a bit out of time...think of the gym teacher/basketball coach from the Peyton Manning episode of SNL.
