In any genre of music, 90% (at least) is garbage, IMO. Rap, Country, Rock, Jazz, whatever. And if you only listen to what's popular in any of those genres, you're going to get the ClearChannel version... not a useful sampler of what's good, I'm sure we can all agree. So why do so many people condemn rap when we know we're not hearing the good stuff when we hear it on Clear Channel or MTV etc.?
I got a few rap things in the ol' cd player myself. Not many, but I'm not ruling much of anything out just because it's in a genre I think I don't like.

This is slightly reminiscent of Diggable Planets in the late 80s/early 90s. I really love chill, jazzish hip-hop. It's great to chill out to.Thanks for playing them!!!

Excellent track. The rapper's voice and style remind me a lot of Arrested Development. A fine message is put forward by the lyrics, as well.

This is pretty groovy, great for after lunch! I hadn't heard of Speech before but I am now intrigued. Something from The Roots or Tribe Called Quest would also be great to add to one of the rotations.
I think it is admiral that folks try to "explain" rap but from the comments I have seen on this song and other rap/hip-hop songs RP has played they are just shouting into the wind. I could add my two cents about the difference between rap and hip hop....but why bother?! :-#

If I had to choose between this and that Shatner piece, I'd take this.

But there are rap artists out there who actually put out songs with thoughful lyrics that aren't about gangs/drugs, etc. (Speech being one of those). If you want to hear good rap music do NOT listen to commercial radio. It's the same with many other types of music, and is the the reason most of us ended up here at RP. Also, rap music is a lot harder to do well than it sounds. Getting the words to flow well is incredibly difficult, so even if a rapper has inane lyrics he/she can still be exhibiting significant skill in formulating those lyrics into a flowing song. Overall, I just want to get people to look beyond their stereotypes about rap music. That being said I think it's just fine that you can't stand rap music, and I'll definitely make sure to turn it down when I drive by your house.

You can't really be an eclectic radio station by ignoring an entire genre of music. Wondered what happended to Speech after Arrested Devlopment. Good to hear that he is still trying to buck the "rap system" by promoting a positive and conscious message, rather than the run-of-the-mill "guns/bitches/drugs/gangs, etc." many of his contemporaries rap about.
I suppose it's nice once in a while to take a break from music and play stuff like this from time to time. Oh, and I feel that it's just fine to rate a song poorly because of its style/genre, especially if said songs don't rise above the mediocrity of other songs in that genre.
I llike the genre, and the spoken word intro is great, but I just don't think that musically this particular song goes anywhere. Maybe some KRS-ONE, Public Enemy, The Streets, Wyclef Jean---those would be better artists that exemplify the most creative aspects of hip-hop, in both a historical and contemporary sense.

I agree with you completely on this!
This crap sucks above all else that sucks.
Rap is not music. If I wanted to hear this, I would hook a an amplifier to a gas-powered generator.

I have no problem with the genre, just the song. It sounds like something they blast at my gym (especially toward closing time, when they're trying to get us out of there).
But I still love RP and always will...

Not bad for a rap song. Rap isn\'t my taste... neither is Reggae, but I listen to them \'Hear\' @ RadioParadise because the music played is a mixture, and is diverse, and it is because of this that I listen.

A little hip-hop now and then is good for us all. If you give it a chance, you might find it more interesting than you realize. I rather enjoyed this song. \"Alternative\" radio embraced Arrested Development (this guy\'s old band) back in the mid-90\'s, giving a lot of airplay to the songs Mr. Wendel and Tennessee. Perhaps this one will follow suit. Thanks Bill!
